Marziali’s Two Goals Fuel Come Back as Buckeyes Top North Dakota, 4-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

Junior forward scores twice in the last five minutes to give Ohio State the win
COLUMBUS, Ohio Junior forward Morgan Marziali scored twice in the last five minutes of regulation as the Ohio State women’s hockey team rallied with three goals in the third period to come back for the 4-3 win against North Dakota Saturday at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. The win gave the Buckeyes three of four points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series as they improve to 3-3-2 overall with a 2-2-2 record in the conference. The game snaps a three-game unbeaten streak for the Fighting Sioux, who are 2-3-3 and 2-1-1 in the league.
Trailing 3-1 heading into the third period, the Buckeyes began to rally back at 5:04 when junior Hayley Klassen scored unassisted to cut the lead to one goal. It was the second goal of the season for the forward from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
As the minutes were winding down in regulation, Marziali scored her first of two goals at 14:57 to even the score at 3-all. The St. Mary’s, Ontario native was assisted by a pair of rookie defensemen in Shannon Reilly and Teal Bishop. The goal was Marziali’s first while Reilly recorded her fourth helper. The assist by Bishop, a native of Anchorage, Alaska, was her first career point as a Buckeye.
Marziali and Bishop then combined again at 16:46 to put the Buckeyes ahead for the first time in the game and give them the eventual win. With two goals and two assists, Marziali and Bishop each posted their first multiple-point games of the season.
Ohio State fell behind in the opening minutes of the game when the Fighting Sioux built a quick 3-1 lead. North Dakota picked up two goals in the same minute for a 2-0 lead when Melissa Jacques scored at 3:28 followed by Andrea Cook at 3:53.
The Buckeyes cut the lead to 2-1when they broke their power play drought on a goal by defenseman Tessa Bonhomme. On passes from senior Erin Keys and sophomore Rachel Davis, the senior captain from Sudbury, Ontario fired in her team-leading sixth goal of the season. The assist was Keys’ third while Davis registered her first point this year. The goal by Bonhomme also ended UND goaltender Brittany Kickham’s shutout streak at 195:20.
The Sioux regained their two-goal lead when Casie Hanson scored at 7:03. They would hold the 3-1 lead until the third period when Ohio State began its comeback.
Overall, Ohio State had a 43-21 advantage in shots, including a 20-9 margin in the first period. The Buckeyes were 1-of-4 on the power play with a perfect 4-of-4 mark on the penalty kill. For the series, OSU was 9-of-9 on the penalty kill.
After letting in the three goals early in the first period, junior Buckeye goaltender Liana Bonanno settled down and turned away a total of 18 shots faced for the win. The native of Mount Sinai, N.Y., improved to 3-3-2 this season while stopping 36 of 39 shots faced in the series.
Up next, the Buckeyes return for a home WCHA series against Bemidji State, Nov. 2-3. Games begin at 7:07 p.m. both Friday and Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink.
