Athletes of the Week
Women’s hockey senior captain Tessa Bonhomme collected two assists as Ohio State tied No. 1 Wisconsin, 2-2, Sunday at the Kohl Center. The tie ended the Badgers’ win streak at 17 games and also snapped OSU’s losing streak to the two-time defending NCAA champs at 12 games. The two helpers increased her team lead in points (6) and assists (4). Her six points are the second-most by a defenseman in the nation, just one behind the leader, and she leads the WCHA in overall defenseman scoring. Bonhomme’s two assists increased her career assist total to 61, moving her to fifth all-time. She surpassed Jeni Creary (2002-05) and is just five assists away from Emma Laaksonen (2001-04) in fourth with 65.
Bonhomme finished the series with a plus-2 rating and helped the OSU penalty kill go 9-for-11 against Wisconsin, holding the Badgers to an 18 percent power play after they entered the series with a 35 percent power play conversion rate (7-of-20).
Peter Boyd of the men’s hockey team was named CCHA Rookie of the Week after lifting the Buckeyes to two wins at the Lefty McFadden College Hockey Invitational at the E.J. Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio.
Boyd, a forward from Cambridge-Narrows, New Brunswick, scored the gamewinning goal against Mercyhurst in his first collegiate game, breaking a 1-all tie midway through the third period. Against Wisconsin, Boyd had the primary assist on senior John Dingle’s late second-period goal that broke a 3-all tie and stood as the gamewinner in OSU’s 5-3 victory.
Boyd had eight shots on the weekend and helped the Buckeye power play convert 4-of-11 (.364) chances in the tournament. Boyd was the first OSU freshman to score a goal in his first career game since R.J. Umberger scored once and Dave Steckel had two goals at Northern Michigan Oct. 13, 2000.
