COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team (2-1-1; 0-0-0 Big Ten) will travel to Lexington, Ky., Friday to face SEC opponent Kentucky at 7:30 p.m. at the UK Soccer Complex.
It will be the lone match for the Buckeyes this week before they host the OSU tournament Sept. 15 and Sept. 17 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
WELCOME BACK
Buckeye sophomore Lisa Collison returned to the OSU lineup after missing the first two games because she was competing with the Under-20 Canadian National Team at the U-20 Women’s World Championship in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Upon her return, Collison tallied five points on two goals and one assist against San Diego in the Puma Classic in Malibu, Calif.
Collison is tied with teammate Lara Dickenmann in points with five.
PUMA CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Lisa Collison, Lara Dickenmann and Lisa Grubb were named to the Puma Classic All-Tournament team after their performances following the weekend event Sept. 1 and Sept. 3 in Malibu, Calif.
Collison scored two goals and an assist, while Dickenmann posted a goal and assist. Grubb recorded an assist. MOVING UP
Ohio State received votes in the Sept. 5 version of the SoccerBuzz.com polls. The Buckeyes also moved up to fourth place in the SoccerBuzz.com Great Lakes Regional standings.
THE LAST TIME…
Lisa Collison tallied five points (2g, 1a) in her return to the OSU lineup vs. San Diego at the Puma Classic Sept. 1. The last time a Buckeye scored five or more points in a match was in 2004 when former midfielder Danielle Dietrich compiled six points on three goals vs. Minnesota Oct. 15 in the 4-0 shutout.
HISTORY
This will be the fifth all-time meeting between the Buckeyes and the Wildcats. Kentucky holds a 3-0-1 advantage, but Ohio State was able to play UK to a 1-1 double overtime tie last season in Columbus, Ohio.
CATCHING UP WITH KENTUCKY
Kentucky comes into its match against Ohio State with a 2-2-0 overall record. The Wildcats have posted wins against Northwestern and Eastern Kentucky, but have dropped matches to Cincinnati and in-state rival Louisville.
In four matches in 2006, UK has out scored its opponents, 10-4, and have posted more shots (53-47). The Kentucky goalkeepers have made 18 stops compared to 27 for its adversaries. The Wildcats have 13 corner kicks to their opponents 15.
The leading scorer for Kentucky is Giuleana Lopez. The freshman forward has posted three goals and one assist for seven points in four games. A close second with six points is freshman forward/defender Katie Fahey. Fahey has notched two goals and two assists.
Head coach for the Wildcats is Warren Lipka (South Carolina, 1986). In his 15th season at the helm of UK, Lipka has compiled a 155-115-22 record.
SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION
Kentucky junior forward Kate Rowlands is the younger sister of four-time Ohio State All-American wrestler (2001-2004) and Buckeye wrestling assistant coach Tommy Rowlands. Kate also is the sister of former OSU softball student-athlete Meghan Rowlands (2002-2005). Kate’s sister-in-law, Elizabeth, who is married to Tommy, played soccer for Kentucky (1999-2003) and is the all-time assists leader for the program.
COLUMBUS CONNECTIONS
A pair of Wildcats are natives of the Columbus area. Sophomores Kristin Kover and Tara Herold hail from Dublin, Ohio, and attended Dublin Coffman High School.
MAKE IT 100
Head coach Lori Walker earned her 100th OSU win Aug. 27 when Ohio State shut out Xavier, 2-0, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
Walker’s Buckeye career record is 101-75-15 in 10 seasons and her overall career mark is 114-98-16 in 12 seasons.
BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK
True freshman Lauren Robertson was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 28 following her performances vs. Kent State and Xavier. Robertson is the first OSU goalkeeper since 1998 to record two shutouts in the first two games of the season. The last Buckeye keeper to accomplish the feat was Ohio State career shutouts leader Amber Barnes (1997-2000). Barnes recorded 22 shutouts in her four-year career and opened the `98 campaign with shutout victories against Evansville (1-0) and Louisville (5-0).
Prior to Barnes, only Stacey Smith (1993 and 1995) tallied consecutive shutouts in the first two games of a season.
FIRST AND GOAL
Ali Schwach scored the first goal of her collegiate career against Xavier. A native of Mendota Heights, Minn., Schwach was the leading scorer for Saint Paul Academy in 2004 and 2005. During those same years, Schwach earned all-conference and all-state laurels, as well as team MVP honors.
LAST TIME OUT
VS. SAN DIEGO
Ohio State scored three unanswered goals to solidify a 4-1 win against San Diego Sept. 1 at the Puma Classic, hosted by Pepperdine University, at Tari Frahm Rokus Field in Malibu, Calif. Lisa Collison, who returned to the Buckeye starting lineup after competing in the Under-20 Women’s World Championship in St. Petersburg, Russia, with the Canadian National Team, got off to a fast start, scoring five points on two goals and an assist.
Collison, who fired all four of her shot attempts on goal, put the first score on the board for the Buckeyes at 23:44 off a penalty kick. The Toreros evened the score at the 32:57 mark when Leigh Ann Robinson scored from the center of the 6-yard box. However, Collison answered with her second goal of the game when she redirected a Lara Dickenmann cross at 41:43.
Dickenmann notched her second goal of the season and 18th of her OSU career in the second half at 84:44 when she took a pass from Collison and put the ball in the net past San Diego goalkeeper Brittany Cameron. Jenna Greenwood rounded out the Buckeye scoring with 3:25 remaining in the match (88:15) after her shot from the left side of the net bounced off the San Diego crossbar and landed inside the goal. Lisa Grubb was credited with the assist.
Lauren Robertson made three saves in 90 minutes of action compared to Cameron’s five. The shot total was close, although San Diego out shot Ohio State 14-11, but the Buckeyes had nine shots on goal. The Scarlet and Gray compiled two corner kicks and the Toreros had five.
VS. NO. 20 PEPPERDINE
Ohio State fell to No. 20 Pepperdine, 1-0, Sept. 3 in the Puma Classic at Tari Frahm Rokus Field in Malibu, Calif. The Buckeyes, who competed a player short in the final 23 minutes of the game, could not overcome the one goal deficit, in what was an otherwise evenly matched contest. It was a free kick by host Pepperdine 7:45 minutes into the second half (52:45) that gave the Wave the lead and the win.
Buckeyes Lisa Collison, Lara Dickenmann and Lisa Grubb earned All-Tournament team honors for their efforts during the weekend. Collison tallied five points on two goals and one assist in her first game back with Ohio State after competing with the Under-20 Canadian National Team at the U-20 Women’s World Championship in St. Petersburg, Russia. Dickenmann was credited with a goal and an assist throughout the tournament and Grubb notched an assist.
After a scoreless and level first half, a series of events in the second stanza left the Buckeyes short a player and another nursing an injury following the match. True freshman Lauren Robertson, who has received four consecutive starts for OSU, was red carded in the 68th minute after making two saves.
Shannon Neely replaced Robertson and the Scarlet and Gray was forced to remove forward Jenna Greenwood from the pitch. Five minutes later, Grubb collided with a Pepperdine player and had to leave the game because of an injury. With 18 minutes left to play, the Buckeyes still were looking for the equalizer on five shot attempts in the half, but could not find the back of the net.
For the match, saves were even with Robertson and Neely both making two stops and Pepperdine’s Kayla Stolte producing four saves. The Buckeyes had 10 shots, four on goal, and three corner kicks compared to the Waves’ 16 and five, respectively.
AT THE “JESSE”
Ohio State’s record at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium is 80-38-10 (.664) and it has eight more matches at JOMS in 2006.
CAPTAINS
Emily Francis, Lisa Grubb and Melissa Miller were named 2006 team tri-captains by their teammates during the offseason.
“Our three captains carry a vast level of experience,” Lori Walker, who is entering her 10th season as head coach, said. “Each has participated at the highest level in soccer and has seen the highs and lows of our program. They have a very clear and united vision for the 2006 Buckeye team, as well as understand and respect the challenges of competing for championships. They are three of our most consistent and our toughest competitors who have learned to strive for excellence in every aspect of the game while maintaining balance in their lives. They will link the coaching staff with the players and will communicate and guide others along the way. “
A native of Alliance, Ohio, Francis will serve her second-consecutive season as captain, as she was voted captain by her teammates a year ago as a junior. Francis has started 63 of a possible 65 games in her three-year career at Ohio State.
Grubb will enter her sixth year of eligibility for the Buckeyes after suffering season-ending injuries in 2003 and 2005. Currently, the OSU all-time leader in goals with 31, Grubb also was a 2005 co-captain with Francis.
Miller, who redshirted her freshman year and is entering her fifth year at Ohio State, is the only current Buckeye to start every game since 2003 (65). Miller’s 65 consecutive starts is second behind former Buckeye Erica Nollen’s 89. In 2005, Miller was a Great Lakes Region and All-Big Ten honoree.
UP NEXT
Ohio State will co-host the Ohio State Tournament with Dayton, as both teams will welcome No. 16 California and Washington to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. Action gets underway at 5 p.m. Sept. 15 with the first game pitting Washington against Dayton. Ohio State will be featured in game two and will play Cal at 7:30 p.m.
On day two of the tournament (Sept. 17), Cal will open against Dayton at 11:30 a.m. OSU will play Washington at 2 p.m. to conclude the weekend.
