COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team beat Wisconsin, 2-1, Friday night in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium courtesy of Jenna Greenwood’s gamewinning header in the 28th minute. In the Buckeyes’ (5-4-1; 1-2-0 Big Ten) conference victory, Lisa Grubb tied the OSU all-time career assists record with 23 helpers and Lara Dickenmann recorded her fourth goal of the season. Wisconsin falls to 4-4-2 and 1-2-0 in the league.
“I think we dominated the first half,” Lori Walker, head coach, said. “We out shot them eight to three. We won most of the midfield battles. We got a good number of 50-50 balls, but Wisconsin is a good team. They pressed us the last 10 minutes, but we were able to hold on.”
All of the scoring took place in the first half with Dickenmann (Jr., Kriens, Switzerland, DFC Sursee) getting the Buckeyes on the board first in the 20th minute. Dickenmann knocked in the ball from the 6-yard box and Grubb (Sr., Portage, Mich./Michigan Hawks) and defender Melissa Miller (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Kolping) were credited with the assist. The Badgers responded at the 26:05 mark when Sheri Ferron found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-all. Less than two minutes later (27:54), Greenwood (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Ohio Premier) was fed a pass from Emily Francis (Sr., Alliance, Ohio/Ohio Premier) from the right flank and was able to beat Wisconsin goalkeeper Lynn Murray to the net for the score.
After out shooting the Badgers, 8-3, in the first half, the Buckeyes had the one shot (9-8) advantage in the second stanza. Up a goal, the Wisconsin offense started to press the Buckeye defense towards the end of the match, but the Scarlet and Gray was able to maintain its one-goal lead.
“We have been playing two different styles of soccer the last few weeks,” Walker said. “We have been trying to mix things up to open up the game. Tonight, we really tried to switch the field and attack the open holes.”
For the match, Ohio State had 17 shots, including eight on goal compared to Wisconsin’s 11 shots with three on goal. Lauren Robertson (Fr., Mission Viejo, Calif./So Cal Blues), recorded two saves, while Murray had six. The Buckeyes held the corner kicks advantage at 5-4.
The Buckeyes continue conference action when they host Northwestern at 1 p.m. Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
