Women’s Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision to No. 25 Purdue in Big Ten Opener – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team (4-3-1; 0-1-0 Big Ten) lost, 1-0, to No. 25 Purdue (8-1-2; 1-0-0 Big Ten) Friday at Varsity Soccer Complex in West Lafayette, Ind. The Buckeyes’ Lara Dickenmann had eight shots to her credit with five coming on goal.
“This was a classic Big Ten game where the margin of victory is very small,” Lori Walker, head coach, said. “The goal given was a typical windy day goal where the ball bent in at the far post. We left everything on the field. The back line played fantastic. We had variety in our attack, but we just need to find the back of the net. We played a good Purdue team.”
The lone goal scored in the game came in the first half when the Boilermakers scored off a corner kick. Shauna Stapleton was credited with the goal. The Buckeyes had a chance to capitalize off a header by Jessica Roberts, (So., Strongsville, Ohio/Ohio Premier) but the Purdue defense was able to make the stop for the team save. Ohio State took six shots, with one on goal, compared to Purdue’s 10 in the half.
The Buckeyes added six more shots on goal, five by Dickenmann, (Jr., Kriens, Switzerland/DFC Sursee) in their attempt to score the equalizer in the second half and OSU keeper Lauren Robertson (Fr., Mission Viejo, Calif./So Cal Blues) made two back-to-back saves at 70:55 and 71:42 to help keep Ohio State within one goal. Freshman Ashley Bowyer (Fr., Aliso Viejo, Calif./Slammers) also added a shot on goal for the Buckeyes.
For the match, Ohio State had 18 shots to Purdue’s 19. Corner kicks were even at six-all and Boilermaker goalkeeper Lauren Mason made six stops to Robertson’s two. Ohio State resumes Big Ten action vs. Indiana at noon EDT Sunday at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
