Anthony Gonzalez, junior split end
On earning a 4.0
“Any pressure I felt I put it on myself. It was a matter of figuring out what I wanted to do and I want to be a lawyer. So I set my sights on getting a 4.0.”
On balancing schoolwork and football
“In the winter it is a little more difficult because my schedule is not as structured. The quarter is the hardest because I have a lot of down time, so I have to budget my time. But the work isn’t difficult, it’s just time consuming.”
On courses he took
“I took Latin, medieval philosophy and symbolic logic. I could apply those classes to a lot of things, but not football.”
Jim Tressel, head coach
On the team’s academic achievements
“It is great to have these guys earn a 4.0 and we have 49 guys who have a 3.0 or higher. This is a great school with a great support system and our kids are working hard. Our goal, as a team, is a 3.0. Maintaining academics is what we believe in. Many of our kids will go to the NFL, but we want them to have some fun choices afterwards.”
On spring practice
There are a lot of new faces, but it is fun to watch. Our mindset is similar each year. We have to keep our mind on this practice, this meeting. In the spring, our minds can drift and keeping focused is the key.”
Austin Spitler, freshman linebacker
On getting into the mix for the upcoming season
“I hope I will be in the mix. I keep working toward it, which is all that you can do. I am getting more experience and my body is maturing. I’ll learn from practice and take it from there.”
