INDIANAPOLIS – The 64-team field competing for the 2006 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship was announced today by the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee.
Earning No. 1 seeds are North Carolina (29-1), Duke (26-3), LSU (27-3) and Ohio State (28-2). North Carolina and Ohio State each won their respective conference regular season and tournament titles. The Tar Heels claiming both championships in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Buckeyes swept the awards in the Big Ten Conference.
Thirty-one conferences were granted automatic bids for the 2006 championship, and the remaining 33 teams were selected at-large. The Atlantic Coast and Big East Conferences placed the most teams in the championship bracket with seven, followed by the Southeastern and Pacific-10 Conferences with six each.
First- and second-round games will be played at eight sites Saturday, March 18 and Monday, March 20 and Sunday, March 19 and Tuesday, March 21. The 16, second-round winners will advance to the four regional sites. The Albuquerque Regional (The Pit/Bob King Court, Albuquerque, N.M.) and the San Antonio Regional (AT&T Center, San Antonio) will be Saturday, March 25 and Monday, March 27, while the Bridgeport Regional (Bridgeport Arena at Harbor Yard, Bridgeport, Conn.) and the Cleveland Regional (Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland) will be Sunday, March 26 and Tuesday, March 28. The four regional winners will meet in the NCAA Women’s Final Four, April 2 and 4, at the TD Banknorth Garden (18,642) in Boston. Louisiana Tech and Tennessee continued their appearance streaks, participating in all 25 Division I Women’s Basketball Championships. Conversely, eight teams are making their first trip to the tournament this year: Army, UC Riverside, Florida Atlantic, Northern Arizona, Sacred Heart, South Florida, Southeast Missouri State and Tulsa.
In the 24-year history of the Division I Women’s Basketball Championship, 12 schools have captured the national title, with Tennessee leading the way with six and Connecticut with five. Last year, at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Baylor won its first national championship with an 84-62 victory over Michigan State in front of a crowd of 28,937.
