Sophomore gymnast Maalika Moore-Thomas led the Buckeyes to asecond-place finish in a quad meet at Pittsburgh Saturday withthree second-place finishes, including a season-best 9.850 on beam.She tied a season-best on floor with a 9.825 and 38.925 in theall-around. Moore-Thomas added a 9.650 on both vault and bars. Sheranks No. 11 in the region in the all-around with an average of38.483 and ranks in the Top 23 in the region in both beam andvault. Men’s basketball sophomore Jamar Butler scored a career high20 points at No. 22 Michigan and then set it again with 22 at homevs. No. 10 Illinois in a pair of wins vs. ranked opponents lastweek for Ohio State. Butler made 71 percent of his shots (15-21) inthe two games and 88 percent of his 3-point attempts in the wins(7-8). In addition, he made all five of his foul shots, dished outnine assists and guarded two of the Big Ten’s best guards in DanielHorton (UM) and Dee Brown (ILL). Those two committed 10 turnoverswith Butler on the defense. Butler made 8 of 11 FGs to lead theBuckeyes vs. Illinois and hit a career-high five 3-pointers. He hasscored 42 points in the last two games. Butler recorded fourassists vs. Illinois for his 11th game with four or more thisseason. In the last two seasons, the Buckeyes are 17-3 in games inwhich Butler dishes our four or more assists.
Athletics Good Stuff
Ohio State women’s swimming and diving will host the 2006 BigTen Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, Wednesday-Saturdayat the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Opening night willhave one evening session, while the following three days willfeature a morning session and evening session. Preliminary raceswill take place in the morning, followed by preliminary diving.Finals will take place in the evening session each night. Doorswill open at 9:30 a.m. for the morning sessions and 5:30 p.m. forthe evening sessions. An all-session pass for the entire event is$30. Single session passes are also available. Preliminary sessionsare $5 per session, while evening sessions are $8 per session. Acomplete schedule and directions to the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilionis available on ohiostatebuckeyes.com. The wrestling team willconclude its regular season vs. No. 8 Penn State at 7 p.m. Fridayat St. John Arena. The 2005-06 senior class of Nathaniel Augustson,Brent Billet, Nathan Costello and Steve Sommer will be honored witha prematch ceremony. The Buckeyes then will gear up for the 2006Big Ten Wrestling Championships March 4-5 at Assembly Hall inBloomington, Ind. The No. 2 men’s gymnastics team topped UIC,205.850-204.050, Saturday evening in Chicago. The Buckeyes combinedto win four of the six events including a season high score of34.000 on pommel horse. Ohio State junior Kris Kline (Westerville,Ohio/Hocking Valley Gymnastics Center) placed second in his firstall-around scoring 49.200. Kline tied teammate Willie Ito (So.,Huntington Beach, Calif./South Coast Gym) for second place onpommel horse (8.650). The Buckeyes swept vault with a team score of36.750. Sophomore David Ortiz (Cincinnati, Ohio/Queen CityGymnastics) won the event with a career and season high 9.450.Wickham and co-captain Nicholaus Searcy (Jr., Dublin, Ohio/HockingValley Gymnastics Center) claimed second and third with a 9.350 and9.050, respectively. Searcy’s 9.050 is a career high for theBuckeye on vault. Ohio State won parallel bars with a 33.2 underthe leadership of Searcy who earned a second career high of thenight and first place finish on parallel bar (9.350). On high bar,Ortiz tied teammate Grant Osborne with a 9.400 on high bar to helpthe Buckeyes capture the event with a team total (34.800).
The team returns home to host No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 7 California at 7 p.m. Saturday in St. John Arena.
The synchronized swimming team posted two wins Feb. 11-12,defeating Richmond, 93-62, Saturday at Robins Center Pool inRichmond, Va., and William & Mary, 105-85, Sunday at Adair Poolin Williamsburg, Va. With the victories, the Buckeyes improve to11-0.
Against Richmond the Buckeyes were led by junior Becky Kim who finished first in solo with a score of 94.500 and teamed up with Ellen Hacker and Carmen Moraes to win the trio event with a mark of 91.833. In duet, Carly Grimshaw and Chelsea Luker executed a winning routine, scoring a 94.500. The OSU `A’ and `B’ teams finished first and second, scoring season highs of 95.833 and 94.333, respectively.
Kim was the lone soloist vs. William & Mary and posted a 95.333. In the duet competition, Grimshaw and Luker continued its streak of five consecutive dual victories, winning with a season and team-best 95.833. In the trio competition, Hacker, Kim and Moraes won with a season and team-high 94.833.
The Buckeyes will compete at the Walsh Invitational Saturday at the Northwest Community Center in Canton, Ohio.
The 12th-ranked men’s basketball team travels to Wisconsin foran 8 p.m. game Wednesday in Madison (ESPN Plus/WBNS 10 TV). OhioState (18-3 overall, 7-3 Big Ten) is the highest ranked Big Tenteam after a pair of victories last week vs. ranked opponents. TheBuckeyes have been led of late by sophomore guard Jamar Butler(Lima, Ohio/Shawnee). His play in wins at No. 22 Wisconsin and vs.No. 10 Illinois earned him Big Ten Player of the Week accolades. Heknocked down 15-21 field goals and 7 of 8 3-pointers in the twowins. Ohio State returns home Saturday for a noon game vs.Northwestern (ESPN Regional/WBNS 10 TV) with a 13-1 record in ValueCity Arena this year. The men’s golf team travels for the start ifits spring season to Gaineville, Fla., for the Gator InvitationalFeb. 18-19. The Buckeyes will enter Colin Biles, Jack Tyler, DanRush, Michael Haverfield, Brandon Markiw and Kevin Grabeman in theevent. Jim Brown, Ohio State head coach said the team is readyafter a long offseason. “We are excited to tee it up again incompetition,” Brown said. “We have had a great offseason ofoutstanding work ethic and total commitment to our overall gameimprovement. We have had terrific weather here and have had almostunlimited opportunities to play and practice outside. I believe theteam is prepared to play its best. The Gator Invitational onceagain has attracted one of the top fields in collegiate golf andthis represents another opportunity to measure ourselves againstthe best.” The men’s and women’s track and field teams competedSaturday at two meets, the Husky Invitational at the University ofWashington in Seattle, Wash., and the Iowa State Classic in Ames,Iowa.
At the Husky Invitational, senior Brian Olinger made Ohio State history in the 5,000 with his time of 13:45.94. Olinger’s time shattered his Ohio State record in the 5,000 of 13:52.18 set March 4, 2005. Olinger’s time also served as an automatic bid to the 2006 NCAA indoor Championships next month. Also at Washington, freshman Jeff See posted the third-best mile time in Ohio State history for the second consecutive week. See’s time of 4:03.62 ranks third in Ohio State indoor history and the fastest time ever by a freshman.
At the 2006 Iowa State Classic, the women’s 4×400-meter relay team topped the Ohio State record for the second consecutive week. After posting a time of 3:41 last week at the New Balance Invite in New York City, the Buckeyes raced to a third-place time of 3:39.95, which provisionally qualified the team for the national meet. In the field events, Janine Zylinski claimed sixth in the shot put with a toss of 53 feet, 7 3/4 inches. Her throw also provisionally qualifies for NCAA’s. A day after taking fourth-place in the weight, Lenny Jatsek led the Buckeyes in the field with a personal-best of 57-10 1/4 to finish ninth in the shot put Saturday.
Men’s lacrosse opens its season with a neutral-site gameagainst No. 15 North Carolina at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Calvert HallCollege in Baltimore. The Buckeyes are led by captains AndrewBender, Gary Bining, Jason Bloom, Ben Wolff and Brian Yontz. Themen’s hockey team wraps up its home regular-season schedule with atwo-game series with Ferris State this weekend. The teams will meetat 7:05 p.m. Friday and at 8:05 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena.10th-ranked men’s volleyball (10-2 overall, 1-0 MidwesternIntercollegiate Volleyball Association) lost 3-1 to Penn State anddefeated Springfield College, 3-1, last weekend at the VolleyballHall of Fame-Morgan Classic. OSU’s Brett Versen and Conor Martinwere named to the All-Tournament Team. The Buckeyes return to playin the MIVA with a league match at Loyola (11-1, 4-1) Saturday andplay at Clarke (6-4) Sunday. The rifle team hosted the NRACollegiate Sectional last weekend, finishing tied for third in themeet. Akron finished first at 4,581 with Xavier second at 4,536.Ohio State and Morehead State tied for third at 4,507 andRose-Hulman finished fifth at 4,484. OSU’s Linnea Nygren had thetop two-gun aggregate score of 1,158 in the meet. She posted a 577in smallbore (tied for second) and a 581 (tied for second) in airrifle. Ohio State will next compete in the West IntercollegiateRifle Conference Championship, Feb. 25 at Purdue. The pistol teamwill host a Collegiate Sectional Meet this Friday and Saturday.Women’s volleyball Ami Stevens has been named to the 12-player 2006USA Women’s National Volleyball A-2 Team. The squad was selectedbased on their respective performances at the 2006 USA Women’sNational Team Tryout at the U.S. Olympic Training Center inColorado Spring, Colo., from Jan. 13-15. The team will train in NewOrleans, La., from May 22-26 under the guidance of head coach MaryWise (Florida). The squad will then compete in the Women’s OpenDivision of the USA Volleyball Adult Open Championships at theErnest N. Morial Convention Center from May 27-30. The women’sbasketball team upped its win streak to 12 games with threevictories last week. Tuesday, Brandie Hoskins netted 20 points asOhio State pulled away from Wright State, 79-48, in Value CityArena. The Buckeyes turned around Friday and won at Michigan,71-55, behind 23 points from Jessica Davenport. The week finishedwith a high-scoring affair at home vs. Iowa. The Buckeyes emergedwith an 88-77 victory over the Hawkeyes, shooting better than 65percent from the field. Davenport led four Ohio State players toscore in double figures with 24 points. In the first half, shebecame the second-youngest Buckeye to record 1,500 career points.
Hoskins also surpassed a scoring milestone last week with her 1,000th point at Michigan. In addition, Kim Wilburn moved past 500 assists vs. the Hawkeyes.
Ohio State plays just one game this week at No. 17/16 Minnesota at 8 p.m. Thursday. The Buckeyes are home for two games next week vs. No. 15/15 Michigan State at 7:30 p.m. Monday and vs. No. 10/10 Purdue at 8 p.m. Thursday.
The women’s hockey team (11-14-5, 8-13-3 WCHA) dropped a pairof one-goal games in a two-game WCHA series against Bemidji StateFeb. 10-11 at OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes fell 2-1 Friday and 5-4Saturday. The two losses were just the second time in 14 seriesthat Bemidji State has won both games against Ohio State. Seniorco-captain Jana Harrigan had two assists in the Saturday game toincrease her team-leading point total to 41. It is thefourth-highest single-season point total in OSU history. Her 21assists are the fifth-most in a single season.
The Buckeyes next play in their last regular-season road series when they travel to Grand Forks, N.D., to face the Fighting Sioux Feb. 18-19. Ohio State will then conclude its 2005-06 regular-season schedule Feb. 24-25 against Wisconsin at OSU Ice Rink.
The women’s gymnastics team, now ranked No. 6 in the CentralRegion, scored a 192.840 last week to place second in a quad meetat Pittsburgh. The Buckeyes (7-3) travel to No. 16 Denver Saturdayevening in the last of four consecutive road meets for OSU. Thesquad holds three No. 5 rankings in the regional standings,including floor (48.154), beam (47.633) and bars (48.225). OSU isranked No. 9 on vault (47.771). The softball team went 4-1 at itsseason-opening tournament last weekend, finishing second at theHilton Las Cruces (N.M.) Invitational. Seniors Stacy Hibma andChelsea Baker were named to the all-tournament team and Hibma wasnamed the Big Ten Player of the Week. The Buckeyes batted .340 as ateam in the tournament and scored at least seven runs in fiveconsecutive games for the first time in program history.
