Sophomore forward Erin Keys of the women’s hockey team made her first career game-winner count as she scored the overtime goal Saturday to give the Buckeyes the 3-2 win against No. 4 Minnesota at OSU Ice Rink. The native of St. Paul, Minn., netted the winning goal against the Gophers just 50 seconds into the overtime stanza. Keys has seven goals and 13 points this season to rank third on the team in scoring.
Sophomore Lenny Jatsek claimed first place in the shot put with a personal-best heave of 56 feet 11 ¼ inches. Jatsek was the top collegiate competitor in the weight, taking second with a career-best measure of 67'-5 ½”, this throw is tops in the Big Ten this season.
Athletics Good Stuff
Buckeye wrestler Blake Maurer paced Ohio State at 174 duringthe weekend, scoring two wins over nationally-ranked grapplers fromMinnesota and Illinois. Maurer recorded a 6-4 sudden victory winover No. 10 Gabriel Dretsch Jan. 27 and the Evansville, Ohio,native’s decision vs. the Golden Gopher gave the Buckeyes an early3-0 lead against the No. 1 team in the nation. Maurer returned toaction Sunday and pinned No. 8 Donny Reynolds in 2:14 in the firstperiod.
Teammate J Jaggers also recorded a 2-0 weekend at 149, defeating Minnesota’s Tyler Safratowich, 8-6, and Illinois’ Troy Tirapelle, 9-7. Jaggers’ win against Tirapelle helped OSU keep pace with the No. 3-ranked Fighting Illini early in the dual.
Ohio State returns to action when it faces No. 16 Northwestern and No. 23 Wisconsin Feb. 3 and Feb. 5. The Buckeyes will take on the Wildcats at 8 p.m. (EST) at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill., and will meet the Badgers at 2 p.m. (EST) at UW Field House in Madison, Wis.
Rifle finished eighth at the Roger Withrow Invitational atMurray State Saturday. Ryan Kohatsu posted a 589 smallbore score towin that event and added a 579 in air rifle to finish with a 1,168two-gun aggregate mark to lead the Buckeyes. Linnea Nygren recordeda 1,145 with a 564 in smallbore rifle and a team-high 581 in airrifle, finishing 17th in the competition. Ohio State will hostXavier and West Virginia Saturday. No. 8-ranked Men’s volleyball(7-1) returns to action this week by hosting George Mason (7-0)Thursday in St. John Arena at 7 p.m. and then begins conferenceplay in the Midwestern intercollegiate Volleyball AssociationFriday at Mercyhurst (1-3, 1-1 MIVA). Jessica Davenport scored 19points in each of the women’s basketball team’s two wins last weekover Wisconsin Thursday and Illinois Sunday. Davenport also had 14rebounds and four blocked shots to become Ohio State’s careerleader in blocks in the 73-46 victory over the Badgers. Frontcourtmate Debbie Merrill added 16 points vs. the Badgers. Sunday, theBuckeyes scored a 75-49 win against Illinois in front of aseason-high 11,622 fans. Ohio State knocked down 11-of-17 3-pointtries, including Marscilla Packer’s 5-for-7 effort from 3-pointterritory, to pull away from the Illini.
Next up for the Buckeyes is a trip to Indiana at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The No. 18 men’s tennis team recorded a 5-2 victory vs. No. 17Tennessee (1-1) Sunday at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center.The Buckeyes have now won 32-consecutive home matches dating backto the 2003 season. Ohio State is 4-0 on the year. The Buckeyesbeat Toledo 7-0 and Xavier 6-1 in a season opening double headerJan. 25, before beating Oklahoma 6-1 last Friday. Seniors ScottGreen (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Ross Wilson (Toledo,Ohio/Toledo St. Francis de Sales), the No. 2 doubles team in thecountry, won their third dual match of the year as a No. 1 doublestandem with an 8-2 win vs. UT’s Ben Rogers and Kaden Hensel Sunday.The OSU pair is 9-1 on the year. Wilson added to his lead as OhioState’s career leader in doubles wins with 95. He is 12-2 thisyear. Green has 94 career doubles wins to rank just behind Wilsonat No. 2 all-time in doubles victories at OSU. The Buckeyes nextplay at 2 p.m. Sunday vs. No. 21 Kentucky in Lexington, Ky. Thesynchronized swimming team scored 93 points to finish first,beating the Ohio `A’ team (78.750), Ohio `B’ team (70.333) andMiami (67.667) at the Ohio Invitational Jan. 29 at the OU AquaticCenter in Athens, Ohio. For the second-consecutive week, theBuckeyes swept all three routines. Becky Kim recorded the highestscore of the meet with a 95.667 in the solo routine and the pair ofCarly Grimshaw and Chelsea Luker won duet, notching a 92.667. Inthe trio routine, Ellen Hacker, Kim and Carmen Moraes recorded a94.333 to solidify the Buckeye victory.
Ohio State returns to action when it hosts the OSU College Association Meet at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
The women’s tennis team (2-1; 0-0 Big Ten) returns home to facethe West Virginia Mountaineers and the Missouri Tigers thisweekend. The Buckeyes are coming off a 7-0 defeat at No. 22 NotreDame. The men’s gymnastics team defeated Big Ten foe Illinois,213.350-206.900, Saturday at St. John Arena winning five of sixevents including pommel horse (32.650), rings (34.600), vault(36.100), parallel bars (36.750) and high bar (37.250).
Ohio State captains Willie Ito (Jr., Huntington Beach, Calif./South Coast Gym) led the way for the team. Ito placed first on both parallel bars and high bar by tallying 9.700 on each event, the highest score in the country this season on both events. The score on parallel bars was a career high.
Sophomore DJ Bucher (Mason, Ohio/Queen City Gymnastics) was the only gymnast to compete in the all-around tallying a 44.600. Bucher finished first on rings with a 9.200 and second on parallel bars with a 9.350.
Ohio State head coach Miles Avery will accompany Jake Bateman, Bucher, Eddie Hay, Ito and Jimmy Wickham and former Buckeyes Raj Bhavsar and Randy Monahan to the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev. Bateman, Hay and Ito will perform in the first of two individual event qualifying sessions on Thursday. Bucher and Wickham will compete in the second individual event qualifying session.
The Buckeyes are vying for 14 spots on the U.S. Men’s Senior National Team against 84 gymnasts from 34 collegiate and club gymnastic squads. All gymnasts will compete in an individual event qualifying round on Thursday. The top 40 gymnasts will advance to the individual event finals on Saturday evening.
The baseball team began practicing Monday afternoon inpreparation for the season opener Feb. 24 against Wake Forest atthe Pepsi Baseball Classic at the University of Florida inGainesville, Fla. That weekend the team also will play nationalrunner-up Florida and Missouri. The Buckeyes return 18letterwinners from a team that finished 40-20 overall, 17-12 in theBig Ten and won the seventh conference tournament title in schoolhistory. The third tournament title in the last four years sentOhio State to the NCAA tournament for the 11th time under 19th-yearhead coach Bob Todd and the 17th time in school history. In totalfive position starters return, including junior second basemanJason Zoeller, senior shortstop Jedidiah Stephen, junior thirdbaseman Ronnie Bourquin, sophomore catcher Eric Fryer and sophomoreoutfielder Matt Angle. Two pitchers from last season’s startingrotation return, including junior Dan DeLucia and sophomore CoryLuebke. Closer Rory Meister also returns. DeLucia, Stephen andjunior outfielder Jacob Howell will captain the squad. The Buckeyesopen the 10th season at Bill Davis Stadium March 29 against Toledo.The men’s basketball team finished the non-conference portion ofthe 2005-06 season 11-0. It’s the first undefeated non-conferenceseason for the Buckeyes since the 1990-91 campaign (10-0). TheBuckeyes ended the non-conference home schedule 9-0, the most homenon-conference wins at VCA in its eight seasons. Thad Matta is35-15 as head coach of the Buckeyes. His winning percentage of 70percent is third best in OSU history after 50 games. Fred Taylor(1959-76) and Randy Ayers (1990-97) were 36-14 (.720) over thefirst 50 games of their careers. Ohio State gets back to Big Tenplay at 3 p.m. Saturday vs. Minnesota at VCA. The game vs. theGolden Gophers will be televised locally by WBNS 10 TV. The men’sand women’s track teams hosted the Ohio State Invitational Saturdayin French Field House. For the women in the 55-meter dash, freshmanAyrizanna Favours won the event in 6.93, which was the second besttime in Ohio State indoor history. In the 200m, Favours placedfirst in a career-best 24.54. Favours also anchored the winning4x400 meter relay team in a time of 3:51.74. For the men on thetrack, Ohio State carried the first three spots in the 400-meterrun. Senior Todd Dutch placed first in 49.52. He finished ahead ofteammates Gerald Griffin (49.84) and Adam Wilhelm (50.11). Indistance events, Ohio State’s Glenn Collins took top honors in themile in an indoor personal record of 4:17.99. For the women in thefield, senior Keturah Lofton captured the weight with a provisionalqualifier of 66-10 3/4 prior to that freshman Janine Zylinski’svictory in the shot put at a distance of 49-6 1/4. In distanceevents Melanie Price won the 1,000m in 2:58.81. The men’s hockeyteam split its home series with Notre Dame last weekend, with eachteam posting a 1-0 victory. The Buckeyes won the first game, led byMathieu Beaudoin’s goal and senior goalie Dave Caruso’s 28 saves.Caruso was named the CCHA Goaltender of the Week for his efforts.His shutout Friday was his fifth of the season and the 11th of hiscareer, tying the Ohio State record in both categories.
This weekend, the team travels to Ann Arbor to face No. 6 Michigan. The teams will meet at 7:35 p.m. Friday and at 8:05 p.m. Saturday in Yost Ice Arena. The Saturday contest will be televised live by CSTV.
The women’s hockey team opened a three-week home stand with asplit with No. 4 Minnesota Jan. 27-28 at OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyesfell by a score of 4-1 Friday before defeating the Golden Gophers3-2 in overtime Saturday on Erin Keys’ game-winning goal. It wasthe second time OSU beat Minnesota in overtime this season, alsowinning 2-1 Nov. 5 at Ridder Arena. The win also gave head coachJackie Barto her 100th victory at Ohio State. Senior Jana Harriganand junior Katie Maroney each had a goal and two assists in theseries. The two teams split the season series for only the secondtime in history with the other split occurring in the 2000-01season. This year, UM won both Friday games while OSU won bothSaturday matchups. The overtime game Saturday was Ohio State’sfourth in the last six games. Overall this season, the Buckeyes are2-1-4 in overtime games.
The Buckeyes continue their home stand Feb. 3-4 when nationally-ranked Minnesota-Duluth comes to OSU Ice Rink. Games begin at 7:07 p.m. Friday and 4:07 p.m. Saturday.
The women’s gymnastics team scored a 192.000 Friday night butdropped a meet at No. 4 Michigan, which scored a season-high195.600. The Buckeyes scored a season-high on bars with a 48.550and were led by freshman Amanda Surine, who finished third in theall-around with a 38.150. Freshman Alyssa Meyer led OSU on beamwith a season-best 9.650 and also had season-bests on bars (9.750)and floor (9.675). Ohio State, ranked No. 7 in the Central Region,travels to a quad meet at West Virginia at 1 p.m. Sunday. TheBuckeye fencing squad will host the Ohio State Duals Saturday inFrench Field House. The nine-round event will begin at 7:30 a.m.and include a total of 13 teams, including the top-ranked OSU men(13-0) and fourth-ranked OSU women (10-3). Visiting schools includePurdue, Xavier, Indiana, Detroit-Mercy, Case Western Reserve,Oberlin, Bowling Green, Michigan, Cleveland State, Michigan State,Cincinnati and Notre Dame. The men’s swimming and diving teamreturns home this weekend for its final two dual meets before theBig Ten championships. The first meet is against Eastern MichiganFriday at 4 p.m., followed by the final dual meet of the seasonagainst Penn State at noon on Saturday. Two individual winshighlighted the women’s swimming and diving double-dual meet withPenn State and Indiana Friday and Saturday at the Bill and MaeMcCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, as Nicole Maglich and Gulsah Gunenc eachrecorded an individual win during the two-day meet. Maglich’s wincame in the 500-yard freestyle, while Gunenc’s occurred in the200-yard butterfly. Both swimmers notched an NCAA “B” qualifyingtime with the victories and both have now accumulated sevenconsideration times this season.
Following a three-week break, the Buckeyes will play host to the 2006 Big Ten Championships, Feb. 15-18, at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
