Bonhomme Scores Twice to Lead No. 9 Women’s Hockey to 3-2 Victory at Princeton – Ohio State Buckeyes

PRINCETON, N.J. – The ninth-ranked Ohio State women’s hockey team held off a late Princeton charge to beat the Tigers, 3-2, Saturday at Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton, N.J. The Buckeyes improved to 12-6-1 on the year (7-6-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association), while the Tigers dropped to 9-6-2 overall (8-2-1 ECACHL).
Junior defenseman Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario) led the way for the Buckeyes with two goals, including the game-winner at 10:50 of the third period to break a two-all tie.
Bonhomme put the Buckeyes on top 1-0 at 11:07 of the first period. Senior Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario) assisted on Bonhomme’s 10th goal of the year. It was Bowman’s team-leading 18th assist of the season. The period ended 1-0 as OSU out-shot Princeton 9-3 for the period.
The second period didn’t supply much action as the two teams went scoreless in the period with Princeton out-shooting the Buckeyes 10-2. OSU goaltender Erika Vanderveer (Sr., Bradford, Ontario) stopped 13 shots through two periods.
After a scoreless second period in which Princeton had a 10-2 margin in shots, OSU went up 2-0 just 56 seconds into the third on a goal by Morgan Marziali (So., St. Mary’s, Ontario). Junior Lisa Chesson (Plainfield, Ill.) and sophomore Megan Hostasek (Kimberly, British Columbia) assisted on Marziali’s goal. But the Buckeyes lead did not last as Princeton scored two unanswered goals at 2:43 and 4:47 of the third period to tie the game at 2-2. Princeton’s second goal was a power-play tally. OSU responded though with Bonhomme’s game-winner, her second goal of the day and 11th of the season. The game-winner was assisted by junior forward Erin Keys (St. Paul, Minn.) and junior Mallory Peckels (Minocqua, Wis.).
Vanderveer made 32 saves on the night for OSU to improve to 11-3-1 on the year. Ohio State ended the game with 16 shots, while Princeton had 34.
The Buckeyes were 0-for-4 on the power play in the game, while the Tigers were 1-of-6.
Game two of the road series is Sunday at 1 p.m. at Hobey Baker Rink.
