Women’s Hockey Tops Northeastern, 7-1, for Sweep of Huskies – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team defeated Northeastern by a score of 7-1 Saturday to complete the sweep of the Huskies. The Buckeyes scored a school-record 16 goals in the series. OSU improves to 2-0-0 overall while the Huskies fall to 0-2-0.
Nine Ohio State players registered a point with junior defenseman Lisa Chesson (Plainfield, Ill./Chicago Mission) recording a career-high four points on two goals and two assists to lead the team. Sophomore Morgan Marziali (St. Mary’s, Ontario/London Devilettes) also scored two goals while junior Mallory Peckels (Minocqua, Wis./Madison Capitols) had a goal and two assists.
Fellow junior Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario/Sudbury Lady Wolves) followed up her four-point performance Friday with three assists Saturday. Senior Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario/Beatrice Jr. Aeros) had a goal and as assist and freshman Raelyn LaRocque (The Pas, Manitoba/Edmonton Chimos) notched two assists in just her second collegiate game.
After entering the first intermission with the score tied at 1-all, the Buckeyes exploded for four goals in the second period, including three in the final 2:02, and two in the third for a 7-1 final. Sophomore goaltender Liana Bonanno (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Sound Shore Warriors) stopped 15 of 16 shots faced for her first win this season.
The Huskies scored their lone goal of the game 12:35 into the first period for a 1-0 lead. Nikki Petrich knocked the puck in from the left side on passes from Chelsey Jones and Katy Applin.
Ohio State evened up the score at 1-all with a power play goal at 16:54. Bowman passed the puck to Chesson at the top of the right circle. Chesson then backhanded the puck toward the goal, where Peckels deflected it into the back of NU’s net.
Chesson scored a power play goal 6:16 into the second period on assists from Peckels and Bonhomme to give the Buckeyes the lead. They would never look back as Bowman netted a goal at 17:58, followed by two quick goals by Chesson at 19:14 and Marziali at 19:43 for a 5-1 lead heading into the second intermission. Freshman Rachel Davis (Horton, Mich./Honeybaked) collected her first point as a Buckeye on Marziali’s goal with an assist.
Ohio State scored two goals in the opening minutes of the third period to finish the game 7-1. Junior Erin Keys (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Durham Hall) scored a goal on a pass from classmate Jody Heywood (Regina, Saskatchewan/Regina Cougars) at 3:51. Marziali tallied the final OSU goal at 4:28 to close out the game.
Overall, OSU out-shot Northeastern, 26-18. Ohio State was 3-for-8 on the power play, for a 7-for-12 power play performance on the weekend. The Buckeye penalty kill remained perfect with a 6-for-6 mark and was 15-for-15 in the series.
Junior goaltender Jill Mauch (Framingham, Mass./Cushing Academy) played the final 11:41 of the game for OSU and made two saves. Stacey Scott of NU made 15 saves in the loss to fall to 0-1-0.
