Women’s Hockey Defeated by No. 6 Minnesota, 4-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team fell by a score of 4-1 to No. 6 Minnesota Friday at OSU Ice Rink. The Golden Gophers capitalized on three of five power play opportunities in the second period to pull away with the win. The Buckeyes are now 2-5-0 overall this season with a 0-5-0 mark in the WCHA. Minnesota moves to 4-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in conference games.
With just 1:56 remaining in the first period, Minnesota scored to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Kelli Blankenship knocked the puck in during a scramble in front of the OSU net. She was assisted by Dagney Willey and Jenelle Philipczyk. For the stanza, shots were even at 9-apiece.
The Gophers added three power play goals in a 2:25 time span in the second stanza to up their lead to 4-0 after two periods. Gigi Marvin scored the first at 9:35, banking in a shot off the left post. While on a 5-on-3, Minnesota then pulled its goaltender Brittony Chartier for an extra attacker on a delayed penalty, scoring just three seconds later at 10:32. The 6-on-3 goal was scored by Blankenship, her second of the game, with assists from Bobbi Ross and Erica McKenzie. Still with three skaters, but facing a 4-on-3 attack, the Buckeyes allowed a third goal at 12:00, with Melanie Gagnon lighting the lamp with assists from McKenzie and Marvin.
Despite being on the penalty kill five times in the second period, Ohio State remained even in shots with the Gophers with 10 each.
The lone Buckeye goal came early in the third period when sophomore Morgan Marziali (St. Mary’s, Ontario/St. Michael’s) scored a shorthanded goal at 5:23 to erase the shutout. Marziali intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and skated down to the Minnesota goal, beating two Gophers, to notch the first shorthanded goal of her career and fourth goal this season. Overall, Ohio State had a 31-29 edge in shots put were 0-for-8 on the power play. Minnesota was 3-for-7 with the man-advantage.
Sophomore Liana Bonanno (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Sound Shore Warriors) manned the Buckeye goal and made 25 saves but fell to 1-3-0 this year. Chartier of the Gophers stopped 30 of 31 shots to improve to 4-2-1.
Ohio State will face Minnesota in the second game of the series Saturday at 7:07 p.m. at OSU Ice Rink.
