Women’s Hockey Falls in Overtime to St. Cloud State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team fell to St. Cloud State by a score of 3-2 in overtime Saturday at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. With the win, the Huskies took all four points of the WCHA series as they improved to 2-4-0 in the league and 3-4-1 overall. Ohio State moves to 2-4-0 with a 0-4-0 mark in WCHA games.
After a scoreless first period in which the Buckeyes had a 12-11 edge in shots, junior Shelby Aldous (LaSalle, Ontario/Windsor Wildcats) scored 5:36 into the second for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Hayley Klassen (Warman, Saskatchewan/College of Notre Dame) picked up her second assist of the season on the goal.
St. Cloud State scored twice in the remaining minutes of the stanza to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. Megan McCarthy scored at 11:04 to tie the game, followed by a goal by Laura Fast at 17:57 to give the Huskies the lead.
Ohio State scored early in the third period to tie the game once again. Klassen evened the score at 2-all on her second goal of the season with assists from juniors Erin Keys (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and Lisa Chesson (Plainfield, Ill./Chicago Mission). It was Keys’ seventh assist of the season to tie for the team lead while Chesson picked up her sixth helper.
The game remained tied at the end of regulation for the Buckeyes’ first overtime game of the season. Ohio State was assessed a penalty 3:24 into the extra period to put SCSU on a power play. The Huskies capitalized on the man-advantage, scoring just five seconds after the faceoff for the 3-2 victory. Denelle Maguet scored the gamewinner unassisted.
Senior goaltender Erika Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) made 34 saves for the second game in a row, but registered the loss to move to 1-2-0 this season. Carmen Lizee of SCSU made 29 saves for her second win of the weekend to move to 2-0-0.
Overall, St. Cloud State outshot the Buckeyes 37-31. Ohio State was 0-for-4 in power plays while SCSU was 1-for-6.
The Buckeyes look to rebound from the St. Cloud State series when they return to Columbus to host No. 4/6 Minnesota Oct. 27-28. Both games begin at 7:07 p.m. at OSU Ice Rink.
