Buckeye Rally Comes Up Short as Women’s Hockey Falls to St. Cloud State, 5-4 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team scored twice in the final four minutes, but fell short of completing the rally as the Buckeyes fell to St. Cloud State by a score of 5-4 Friday in a WCHA game at the National Hockey Center. Three Buckeyes notched multiple points, lead by senior Amber Bowman with a goal and two assists. The loss drops OSU to 2-3-0 overall this season with a 0-3-0 mark in conference games. St. Cloud State moves to 2-4-1 overall, 1-4-0 in WCHA contests.
Trailing 5-2 in the closing minutes of the game, the Buckeyes began to rally when Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario/Beatrice Jr. Aeros) scored an even-strength goal at 16:17 of the third period. Sophomore Morgan Marziali (St. Mary’s, Ontario/London Devilettes) recorded her second assist of the season on the goal.
While on the power play just over a minute later, Ohio State scored once again to cut the lead to 5-4. Junior blueliner Lisa Chesson (Plainfield, Ill./Chicago Mission) tallied her second of two goals in the game at 17:22 on passes from fellow junior defenseman Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario/Sudbury Lady Wolves) and Bowman. The Buckeyes skated the final seconds with an extra attacker, but fell short of completing the rally for a final of 5-4.
The teams traded goals in the first period for a 1-1 tie heading into the first intermission. Junior Shelby Aldous (LaSalle, Ontario/Windsor Wildcats) opened the scoring with her first goal of the season at 7:23 on assists by classmates Erin Keys (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Durham Hall), her first of two on the night, and Jody Heywood (Regina, Saskatchewan/Regina Cougars). The Huskies responded just seconds later at 7:44, knotting up the game at 1-all on a goal by Jacqueline Jensen. St. Cloud State scored twice in the second stanza for a 3-1 lead after two periods. Hailey Clarkson scored unassisted at 10:47, followed by Caitlin Hogan on the power play at 12:48.
Chesson opened up the third period with a power play goal at 4:43 to cut the SCSU lead to 3-2. She was set up by Bowman and Keys for her fourth goal of the season. The Huskies responded with two power play goals of their own for a 5-2 lead. Brittni Kuyper notched one at 7:58, followed by Sammy Nixon at 15:29.
With her three points, Bowman took the solo lead in team points at 11 and assists at seven. She is tied with Chesson for the lead in goals with four.
Overall, Ohio State out-shot St. Cloud State, 33-24, including a 17-5 margin in the third period. The Buckeyes were 2-for-8 on the power play while SCSU was 3-for-7.
Sophomore Liana Bonanno (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Sound Shore Warriors) started in net for OSU, making 19 saves while moving to 1-2-0 this season. Carmen Lizee of St. Cloud State recorded her first decision of the year at 1-0-0, stopping 29 shots in the win.
The Buckeyes and Huskies will conclude their series Saturday with a 2 p.m. (CT) game at the National Hockey Center.
