COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team (2-2-0, 0-2-0 WCHA) hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to St. Cloud State (1-4-1, 0-4-0 WCHA) to face the Huskies in a WCHA series Oct. 20-21. Games begin at 7:07 p.m. (CT) Friday and 4:07 p.m. (CT) Saturday at the National Hockey Center.
The Buckeyes are looking to rebound after dropping two games to top-ranked Wisconsin last weekend at OSU Ice Rink. The Huskies are coming off a sweep as well, falling twice to the Beavers at Bemidji State.
ST. CLOUD STATE SERIES HISTORY
After the Buckeyes opened the 2005-06 season with a sweep of St. Cloud State in Columbus, the Huskies won the next four meetings, including two in the first round of the WCHA playoffs in St. Cloud.
Ohio State leads the all-time series 17-13-2 with a slight edge in games in St. Cloud at 8-7-1. In the last five meetings, the Huskies lead 4-1-0.
LAST TIME OUT: WISCONSIN
Ohio State dropped a two-game series to No. 1 Wisconsin, losing twice by scores of 3-2 Oct. 13-14 at OSU Ice Rink. It was the first time in a series with UW that Ohio State lost back-to-back one-goal games. The Buckeyes fell behind 3-0 Friday, but started to rally at the end of the second period on the first of two goals by Mallory Peckels. Her second goal in the third period cut the lead to 3-2, but the Badgers held off OSU for the remaining minutes to secure the win. On Saturday, Ohio State held a 2-1 lead into the second intermission, but UW battled back in the third with two goals for its second 3-2 win of the weekend. SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
St. Cloud State is 1-4-1 overall this season with a 0-4-0 mark in WCHA games. After posting a win and tie against Robert Morris in their season-opening series, the Huskies have dropped their last four games (at Wisconsin and at Bemidji State).
Holly Roberts leads SCSU in points with five (3g, 2a). Meaghan Pezon has scored a team-high four goals while Brita Schroeder leads the Huskies with three assists. The St. Cloud State net is patrolled by three goaltenders – Kendell Newell, Lauri St. Jacques and Carmen Lizee. Newell is 0-2-1 with a 3.02 GAA and .899 save percentage. St. Jacques is 1-2-0 with a 4.89 GAA and .833 sv%. Lizee has played a total of 45 minutes with no decisions, allowing two goals with 13 saves.
BUCKEYES OPEN SEASON WITH RECORD-SETTING SWEEP OF NORTHEASTERN
Ohio State opened its 2006-07 season with sweep of Northeastern in a nonconference series at OSU Ice Rink Oct. 6-7. The Buckeyes won 9-3 in the Friday game, setting a program record for most goals in a game. OSU followed that up with a 7-1 victory Saturday to complete the sweep. The 16 goals were the most Ohio State has ever scored in a two-game series. The Buckeyes extended their unbeaten streak against the Huskies to eight games with the two wins. In 12 games all-time against Northeastern, Ohio State is 7-3-2.
POWER UP
The Ohio State power play continued to post strong numbers with three power play goals against Wisconsin Oct. 13-14. Overall, the Buckeyes are 10-for-19 with the man-advantage to lead to WCHA with a .526 percentage.
FOUR SCORE
Through four games this season, OSU is out-scoring its opponents 20-10, the second-highest goal total in the league. Half of the Ohio State goals have come on the power play.
PECKELS FOR TWO
Junior Mallory Peckels scored twice against Wisconsin Oct. 13 for her first multiple-goal game of her career. It was her fifth multiple-point game of her career. She added an assist Oct. 14 for a three-point weekend.
WELCOME BACK
After redshirting the 2005-06 season, Tessa Bonhomme returned to the college game with an outstanding two-game performance, totaling seven points on two goals and five assists vs. Northeastern (Oct. 6-7). In her first game with Ohio State since March 6, 2005, Bonhomme recorded a career-high four points and followed with three assists Saturday. For her great play, Bonhomme was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week.
CROWDED AT THE TOP
Three Buckeyes are tied for the team lead in goals, assists and points. Senior Amber Bowman and juniors Tessa Bonhomme and Mallory Peckels have each scored three goals and five assists for a total of eight points.
SHE’S GOING STREAKING
Senior defenseman Amber Bowman has notched at least one point in each game this season for a four-game point streak. In the Northeastern series Oct. 6-7, she had three goals and two assists. Bowman followed that up with three assists vs. Wisconsin Oct. 13-14.
GOOD IN GOAL
Both OSU goaltenders Erika Vanderveer and Liana Bonanno had solid performances against the top-ranked Badgers Oct. 13-14. Bonanno started Friday and had 30 saves. Vanderveer started Saturday and had 37 saves. It was the ninth career game for Bonanno with 30 or more saves, while Vanderveer recorded her 19th career game with 30-plus saves.
DOUBLE UP
Sophomore Morgan Marziali has already doubled her career goal total with three goals in four games this season. In 32 games last season she had three goals and nine points. After one series this year, Marziali already has three goals and four points.
BEST OF THE BLUELINERS
Senior Amber Bowman and junior Tessa Bonhomme are climbing the Ohio State records for career points by a defenseman. Bowman ranks third all-time, followed by Bonhomme at fourth. Laaksonen (2001-04) hold the record with 99 points.
With three points against Wisconsin, Bowman increased her career total to 72 (23g, 49a). Bonhomme had a goal vs. the Badgers to move her career total to 55 (15g, 40a).
BONHOMME RETURNS TO BUCKEYES
After redshirting the 2005-06 season, defenseman Tessa Bonhomme returns to Ohio State for her junior year. Bonhomme spent five months participating with the Canadian Centralization Program, competing for a roster spot on the 2006 Winter Olympic team. Although she missed the final cut, Bonhomme competed with the Canadian Under-22 Team in January. She was named captain of the team and helped lead it to a 3-1 record. She was named to the U-22 team for the third time in her career in August.
UP NEXT
The Buckeyes return to Columbus for a set of back-to-back home series against Minnesota (Oct. 27-28) and Connecticut (Nov. 3-4). The two games against the Golden Gophers will both begin at 7:07 p.m. at OSU Ice Rink.
