No. 1 Wisconsin Rallies to Defeat Buckeyes, 3-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team fell to No. 1 Wisconsin by a score of 3-2 Saturday at OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes held a 2-1 lead after two periods, but the Badgers rallied with two goals in the third to take the win, their 18th in a row. OSU moves to 2-2-0 overall and 0-2-0 in WCHA games. Wisconsin remains undefeated at 6-0-0 and 4-0-0 in conference matchups.
After a scoreless first period in which Wisconsin had a 12-5 advantage in shots, the Badgers scored 4:34 into the second period for a 1-0 lead. Jinelle Zaugg scored on the power play for her eighth goal this season. She was assisted by Sara Bauer, her first of three assists in the game, and Emily Morris.
The Buckeyes responded at 10:39 when, on a 2-on-1, junior Jody Heywood (Regina, Saskatchewan/Regina Cougars) knocked in the puck from the right post after a pass up the ice by senior Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario/Beatrice Jr. Aeros). It was Heywood’s first goal of the season and Bowman’s fourth assist.
Ohio State scored again at 14:23 while on the power play as junior Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario/Sudbury Lady Wolves), Bowman and junior Mallory Peckels (Minocqua, Wis./Madison Capitols) combined for a tic-tac-toe goal to take a 2-1 lead. From the bottom of the left circle, Peckels fed the puck up to Bowman in the slot. She tapped it over to Bonhomme who lifted it in top shelf for her third goal this season. It was the fifth assist of the season for both Bowman and Peckels. OSU held its 2-1 lead into the second intermission, but UW continued to lead in shots, 26-14.
Wisconsin tied the game at 2-all early in the third period when Bobbi-Jo Slusar notched a power play goal off the crossbar at 3:35. Kyla Sanders then redirected a shot by Bauer at 14:11 to complete the Badger comeback for a final of 3-2.
Senior goaltender Erika Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) stopped 37 shots but picked up the loss to move to 1-1-0 this season. It was her 19th career game with 30 or more saves. Christine Dufour of Wisconsin had 14 saves to move to 3-0-0.
Overall, the Badgers outshot OSU, 40-16. The Buckeyes were 1-for-2 on the power play while UW was 2-for-2.
Ohio State next travels to St. Cloud State, Oct. 20-21, for their first road series of the season. Games begin at 7:07 p.m. (CT) Friday and 2:07 p.m. (CT) Saturday at National Hockey Center. The Buckeyes then return to OSU Ice Rink for back-to-back home series against Minnesota (Oct. 27-28) and Connecticut (Nov. 3-4).
