COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team was defeated by No. 1 Wisconsin, 3-2, Friday in a WCHA game at OSU Ice Rink. After falling behind 3-0, the Buckeyes scored two goals but fell short of completing the rally as the Badgers extended their win streak to 17 games. Ohio State is 2-1-0 overall with a 0-1-0 mark in conference games. Wisconsin improves to 5-0-0 and is 3-0-0 against WCHA opponents.
Sophomore goaltender Liana Bonanno (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Sound Shore Warriors) stopped 30 of 33 shots faced for her ninth career game with 30 or more saves. She is 1-1-0 this season. UW goaltender Jessie Vetter had 22 saves to improve to 3-0-0.
The Badgers scored two goals in the opening period to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Erika Lawler scored top shelf at 5:53 on a pass from Meghan Duggan from behind the net. Rachel Bible was awarded the second assist.
UW upped its lead to two goals at 14:59 when Kristen Witting blasted the puck into the net from the top of the slot. Phoebe Monteleone and Emily Morris notched assists on the power play goal.
Wisconsin increased its lead to 3-0 on the power play in the second period when Jinelle Zaugg fired a shot from the top of the right circle past Bonanno at 4:26 for her seventh goal of the season.
Ohio State erased the shutout at 9:16 when junior Mallory Peckels (Minocqua, Wis./Madison Capitols) scored her first of two goals on the night. Senior Amber Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario/Beatrice Jr. Aeros) fired the puck from the point and junior Erin Keys (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Durham Hall) picked it up and shot it on goal. Peckels tapped in the loose rebound to cut the score to 3-1, where it would remain heading into the second intermission. It was the fourth assist of the season for Keys and third for Bowman. Peckels brought the Buckeyes within one goal at 11:17 of the third period with her second power play goal of the game. Junior Lisa Chesson (Plainfield, Ill./Chicago Mission) shot the puck toward the Wisconsin goal, but was blocked. From the slot, Peckels picked up the puck and slid it past Vetter on a low shot for her third goal of the season while Chesson notched her fifth assist of the year.
Ohio State had a chance to tie the game in the final minutes, but a shot by senior Krysta Skarda (Lake Elmo, Minn./Stillwater) toward an open UW net from the left doorstep went wide and the Badgers held on for a 3-2 win.
After being outshot 20-5 in the first period, Ohio State had the shot lead in the next two periods with a 12-9 advantage in the second and 7-4 margin in the third.
Ohio State allowed its first power play goals of the season as Wisconsin was 2-for-6. OSU had an impressive five-minute penalty kill at the end of the second period and start of the third after senior Katie Maroney (La Porte, Ind./Culver Academy) was assessed a five-minute major and game misconduct for checking from behind. The Buckeyes limited the Badgers to just three shots on goal during the power play. Overall, the OSU penalty kill is 20-for-22 (.909) this season. The Buckeyes were 2-for-5 with the man-advantage.
Ohio State and Wisconsin conclude their series with a 4:07 p.m. game Saturday at OSU Ice Rink.
