Athletes of the Week
Women’s hockey senior co-captain Jana Harrigan scored threepoints on the weekend (2g, 1a) to break the all-time Ohio Statescoring record. She now has 147 points in her career, surpassingthe former record of 146 set by Jeni Creary (2001-05). Harrigan hada goal and an assist Friday and scored the lone OSU goal Sunday toextend her career-long point streak to 17 games. She has scored 15goals and 13 assists during the streak with six multiple-pointgames. Harrigan has only three games this season without a point.Fifth-year senior Stuart Katz recorded career-highs of 29.5 pointsand 28 kills last week against 11th-ranked Penn State as OSU went2-1(second place) at the Outrigger Invitational. Katz had 13 kills(.267), four digs, three assist blocks and an ace serve in OSU’s3-0 upset of fifth-ranked UCLA in OSU first win over UCLA in 15matches. He had a team-high 10 kills (.185), five digs, two assistblocks and an ace serve in the 0-3 loss to seventh-ranked Hawaii.Katz, in OSU’s 3-2 win over 11th-ranked Penn State, recorded acareer-high 28 kills (.373), five digs and three assist blocks inOSU’s first win over PSU in the last five matches. Katz was namedto the Outrigger Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Katz leads Ohio State with a team-high 4.28 kills per game while hitting .327. He is averaging 1.96 digs, .80 blocks and .24 aces per game.
Athletics Good Stuff
The wrestling team completed a 2-1 weekend on the road,defeating Virginia, 28-10, and Virginia Tech, 38-10, after fallingto No. 15 Indiana, 31-7, Jan. 20-22. In the victories vs. theCavaliers and Hokies, the Buckeyes won eight of 10 matches, whichmarked the fourth time this season OSU has recorded eight-plus winsin a dual.
Two Buckeyes went undefeated during Ohio State’s road trip. T.J. Enright and J Jaggers’ 3-0 mark improve their dual records to 8-3 and 10-1. Overall, Enright is 14-6 and Jaggers is 20-4.
Ohio State returns to St. John Arena and Big Ten action when it hosts No. 1 Minnesota and No. 3 Illinois. The Buckeyes meet the Golden Gophers at 7:15 p.m. Friday and square off against the Fighting Illini at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Prior to the dual meet against the Gophers, the Purple Heart will posthumously be presented to United States Marine Corps Major and former Buckeye wrestler Ramon J. Mendoza. Mendoza’s wife, Karen, will accept the Purple Heart in Mendoza’s name. Mendoza, a native of Blairstown, N.J., lettered for the Buckeyes in 1992 and ’93 and was the Big Ten runner-up at heavyweight in 1993.
The synchronized swimming team opened its season with afirst-place finish at the OSU Tri-Meet Jan. 21 at the Bill and MaeMcCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Buckeyes tallied 96 points tooutpace Keuka College (74) and Michigan (61). OSU swept all threeroutines in solo, duet and trio.
Becky Kim paced OSU in solo, scoring a 90.5 and the pair of Carly Grimshaw and Chelsea Luker won duet with a mark of 89.00. In the trio routine, Ellen Hacker, Kim and Carmen Moraes tallied a 91.667 to help solidify the Buckeyes’ victory.
The women’s hockey team met top-ranked Wisconsin for the firsttime this season, dropping both games in a two-game series at theKohl Center Jan. 20 and 22. The Buckeyes fell 4-3 in overtimeFriday and 5-1 Sunday. The losses snapped a four-game unbeatenstreak for OSU and were the team’s first in 2006. The Buckeyes next return to OSU Ice Rink for a three-week home stand. OSU welcomes two-time NCAA champion Minnesota Jan. 27-28 with games at 7:07 p.m. Friday and 4:07 p.m. Saturday. Saturday is also the Scarlet and Gray game for the women’s hockey team. The teams split the series at Minnesota earlier this season, Nov. 4-5, with the Gophers winning 9-5 in the first game and the Buckeyes pulling a 2-1 overtime upset Saturday.
The No. 7/7 women’s basketball team (15-2, 6-1 Big Ten)extended its current win streak to six games with a pair of leaguewins last week. Jessica Davenport pocketed her second consecutiveBig Ten Player of the Week honor after scoring 31 points andaccounting for the game-winning basket at the buzzer in theBuckeyes’ 67-65 victory at No. 9/12 Michigan State. Davenport wasone of three Buckeyes to score double figures in Ohio State’s 60-50win Thursday at home over Indiana. Brandie Hoskins led the Buckeyeswith 12 points vs. the Hoosiers, while Debbie Merrill gathered 10rebounds.
In the last-second win at MSU, Ashley Allen, who had a season-high 15 points and five 3-point goals, heaved an inbound pass to Marscilla Packer at halfcourt and, after taking one dribble, Packer directed a lob to Davenport near the rim, where the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year converted the lay-in as time expired.
The Buckeyes play host to a two-game homestand this week. They first welcome Wisconsin at 7 p.m. Thursday before playing Illinois at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The men’s and women’s track and field teams opened their BigTen season Saturday at the Indiana Invitational. The women’s teamplaced first ahead in Purdue and Indiana, while the men finishedthird.
One Buckeye from the men’s and women’s teams posted NCAA championship qualifying marks. Junior Jessica Stinger finished first in the high jump at 5 feet, 10 3/4 inches. For the men, sophomore Lenny Jatsek was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week after winning the weight with a throw of 65-9 1/2., which ranks fifth all-time in Ohio State history. Jatsek also took fourth in the shot put.
On the track, junior Jenna Harris won the 60m dash and came in second in the 200m dash. For the men, senior Todd Dutch won the 200m and was second in the 60m. In distance events, senior Brian Olinger won the mile in an impressive 4:07.83
Men’s tennis freshman Bryan Koniecko advanced to the semifinalround of the ninth-annual Rice/Downtown Club at the Met CollegiateIndoor Invitational last Saturday in Houston, Texas. Koniecko (Fr.Long Island, N.Y./Syosset) defeated Jerry Makowski of TexasA&M, the No. 16 player in the country.
Ranked No. 36 in the country, Chris Klingemann (Jr. Bradenton, Fla./Texas Tech Independent) lost to No. 30 Raul Morant/Rivas of Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the quarter-final round. Klingemann is now 7-3 on the year.
One day after collecting his first two collegiate victories, one being against the No. 34 player in the country, Steven Moneke (Fr., Alten-Buseck/Germany) lost in the quarterfinal round. Moneke is now 2-1 on the season.
Ohio State opens the dual season with a doubleheader vs. Toledo and Xavier Wednesday at the Jesse Owens Recreational Center in Columbus. The Buckeyes downed Toledo in a morning match, 7-0. The second match-up vs. the Musketeers is at 5 p.m.
Eighth-ranked men’s volleyball finished second at the OutriggerInvitational last week with wins over UCLA (3-0) and Penn State(3-2) and a loss to champion Hawaii (0-3). Mark Greaves had 14kills and Stuart Katz in OSU upset of fifth-ranked UCLA, in OSU’sfirst-ever victory over the Bruins. Katz scored a team-high 10kills as OSU lost to seventh-ranked Hawaii. OSU trailed 11th-rankedPenn State in game five, 6-1, before coming back to win the game,17-15, and take the match. Katz had a career-high 28 kills with SamStevens adding 14, John Albertson, 13 and Robert Klein 10. TheBuckeyes are off this week and will resume action Feb. 2 at homeagainst George Mason. The men’s hockey team split a two-game serieson the road at Alaska Fairbanks, winning the opener, 5-1, andfalling in game two, 3-0. The line of sophomores Sam Campbell (2goals), Domenic Maiani (3 assists) and Tom Fritsche (2 assists)combined for seven points in the victory Friday.
The Buckeyes return to action with a two-game home series against Notre Dame this weekend. The teams will meet at 7:05 p.m. Friday and at 8:05 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena. The Saturday tilt will be televised live on CSTV.
The women’s tennis team opened the dual season with two winsSaturday at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center. The Buckeyes shutout instate opponents Bowling Green and Cincinnati, 7-0.
The squad hits the road this week for a match at Notre Dame at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The No. 1-ranked men’s gymnastics team opens its home seasonagainst No. 3 Illinois at 7 p.m. Saturday in St. John Arena. TheBuckeyes lead the nation in floor exercise, parallel bars and highbar. The pistol team won four of seven individual titles as theyhosted the Winter Open/ROTC Classic. Teresa Meyer won three eventsand finished second in two others while Anthony Douglass as firstin three-gun aggregate. OSU next shoots at the U.S. Naval Academy,Jan. 27-28. The rifle team lost to the U.S. Military Academy, 4,667to 4,532 in a match held in Palmyra, Pa. Rifle will next compete atthe Roger Withrow Invitational at Murray State (Ky.) Jan. 28. Thewomen’s swimming and diving team notched six individual wins in the184-114 loss to Minnesota, Jan. 21. Gulsah Gunenc won both the 100-and 200-yard butterfly as the Scarlet and Gray’s only double-eventwinner. Gunenc and Nicole Maglich set their sixth NCAA “B”consideration times during the meet. Gunenc set her fourthqualifying time in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.00,while Maglich’s time of 4:53.97 earned her a second NCAA “B”qualifying time in the 500-yard freestyle. Rebekah Rychvalsky set aseason-best time of 2:21.44 in the 200-yard breaststroke event.Linda Lund-Kristiansen and Julie Broms won the 100-yardbreaststroke and the 1-meter springboard, respectively. TheBuckeyes last home meet is Friday and Saturday against Penn Stateand Indiana.
