Ohio State women’s basketball junior center Jessica Davenportwon her sixth career Big Ten Player of the Week honor Monday. Sheled the Buckeyes to three wins last week at home vs. No. 16/16Oklahoma Monday, at Iowa Thursday and vs. Michigan Sunday.Davenport started Monday by banking in a game-winning shot withfour seconds to go in the 75-71 victory over the Sooners. For thegame, Davenport scored 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from thefloor. In Ohio State’s 72-62 win at Iowa, Davenport recorded herfourth-career 30-plus point game, leading all players with 34points, 16 rebounds, a personal-best six assists and three blocks.She made 14 of her 22 field goal attempts and went 6-for-7 from thefree throw line as she recorded her 25th career double-doubleagainst the Hawkeyes. Davenport completed the week with a 15-point,nine-rebound effort Sunday in Ohio State’s 62-34 victory at homeagainst Michigan. For the week, Davenport accounted for 21.3 pointsper game on 25-of-41 shooting (61 percent) from the field. The BigTen’s leading rebounder also pulled down 9.3 boards per contest andtotaled seven blocks shots for the week. Stuart Katz helped OhioState men’s volleyball to a 3-0 mark this week, 5-0 overall, andmoved the team to ninth in the national poll. Katz had 13 kills andhit .381 against Rutgers-Newark, adding six digs, two assist blocksand an ace serve. In the Friday match against UC-San Diego, Katzposted a career-high 17 kills while hitting .314. He added ninedigs, three assist blocks and two ace serves. In one game againstUC-San Diego Sunday, Katz had four kills, four digs and an aceserve. For the three matches he averaged 4.25 kills, 2.38 digs, .62blocks and hit .303. The wins over UC-San Diego marked the winsover a team from the west (against six losses) since two 3-1victories over Pacific in 2002

Jessica Davenport led all players with 34 points, 16 rebounds,six assists and three blocks in the women’s basketball team’s winThursday at Iowa. Davenport knocked down a season-high 14 fieldgoals in 22 tries en route to her third career 30-plus point game.Her six assists also served as a career best. Sunday, Davenport wasone of four Buckeyes to score in double digits, tying for the teamlead with 15 points. Marscilla Packer also tallied 15 and BrandieHoskins and Debbie Merrill had 11 and 10 points, respectively.Davenport also pulled down a game-best nine rebounds. Ohio Stateused a dominating defensive performance to down the Wolverines,limiting Michigan to 25 percent shooting from the field and forcingUM 21 turnovers.
The Buckeyes continue their two-game homestand vs. Indiana at 7 p.m. Thursday.
The Ohio State men’s basketball team is back at it Wednesdayvs. No. 14 Wisconsin at Value City Arena. The game tips at 8:30p.m. on ESPN2. For the Buckeyes, the game will be the third in thelast four outings vs. a ranked opponent. Ohio State is 12-2 on theseason and 2-2 in Big Ten Conference play heading into the match-upwith the 14-2, 4-0 Badgers. Penn State will host the BuckeyesSaturday in State College, Pa. That game will be televised locallyon WBNS 10 TV with a 12:15 p.m. start time. The Buckeyes are led bysenior center Terence Dials, who cracked the Top 10 in careerrebounding with a 19-point, 10-rebound effort Sunday in thedouble-overtime loss to Michigan State (62-59). Dials is now tiedwith Buckeye great John Havlicek at the No. 9 spot all-time incareer rebounds with a total of 720. Dials also passed ClarkKellogg, who was on the broadcast for CBS Sunday, in careerscoring. Dials is No. 22 all time with 1,287 career points. Heaverages a team-best 14.9 points and 7.2 rebounds this season. Thefencing team travels to the New York University Duals this weekendfor its first collegiate competition of the season and first ofthree consecutive weekends of collegiate meets. OSU fencerscompeted at the North American Cup in Houston last weekend with sixindividuals recording Top 10 finishes. Includes were Jason Rogers(sixth, sabre), Mikhail Momtselidze (seventh, sabre), DenisTolkachev (second, epee), Christian Rivera (third, tie, epee) andBoaz Ellis and Andras Horanyi, who both tied for second in foil.The No. 2 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team came back from lastplace after the second rotation to win the Windy City Invitationalwith a score of 211.65 Saturday at the UIC Physical EducationBuilding in Chicago. Sophomore DJ Bucher finished second in theall-around to Michael Reavis of Iowa tallying 53.00 points, just.05 behind Reavis’ first-place score. Bucher finished first on theparallel bars with a score of 9.6. Up next Ohio State welcomesIllinois to St. John Arena for their home opener at 7 p.m. Jan. 28.The women’s gymnastics team won the All-Ohio Championship lastSaturday to improve to 3-0 on the season. Senior Brittany Brown wonthe all-around title and senior Kaylin Schlecht, who tied for firston bars, and sophomore Maalika Moore-Thomas also competed in theall-around. The Buckeyes host Michigan State at 7 p.m. Saturdaybefore going on the road for four consecutive meets. The men’shockey team was 1-1-1 last week, with a 3-0 shutout win over Miami,a 2-0 loss to Nebraska-Omaha and a 2-all tie with the Mavericks.Buckeye goalie Dave Caruso made 24 saves in the shutout victory,his fourth whitewash of the season and the 10th of his career.
The Buckeyes head to Fairbanks, Alaska, this weekend to take on the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks in their first road series since Nov. 25-26 at Notre Dame. The Buckeyes and Nanooks will meet at 11:05 p.m. EST Friday and Saturday at the Carlson Center.
The Ohio State women’s hockey team completed theirnonconference schedule when they hosted Niagara of the CHA Jan.13-14. The teams skated to a tie both games, with a score of 1-1Friday and 2-2 Saturday. OSU was 3-1-2 against non-WCHA opponentsthis season. Senior Jana Harrigan scored all three of Ohio State’sgoals on the weekend. Two of her goals were shorthanded, includingthe lone Buckeye goal Friday, to give her four shorthanded goalsthis season for a new OSU single-season record.
Ohio State next travels to Madison to face No.1/1 Wisconsin Jan. 20 and 22. It is the first meeting between the Buckeyes and Badgers this season. Games begin at 2:07 p.m. (CT) Friday and 12:07 p.m. Sunday. Head coach Jackie Barto is one win away from her 100th career win at Ohio State. She has a record of 99-120-23 in six-plus seasons at OSU with an overall mark of 169-173-33 in over 11 years of collegiate coaching.
The pistol team will host the Winter Open/ROTC Classic Saturdayand Sunday. The rifle team will face the U.S. Military AcademySaturday at Palmyra, Pa. Ray Burse and Kyle Veris of the men’ssoccer team returned Sunday from the MLS combine, held last weekendat the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The MLS SuperDraft isFriday in Philadelphia. The Ohio State women’s swimming and divingteam defeated both Marshall and Ohio last weekend. AgainstMarshall, the Buckeyes won 134-98, while the team defeated Ohio180-114. During the Marshall meet, Ohio State won all but oneevent. Against the Bobcats, the Buckeyes won 13 of 16 events andswept the Top 2 spots in four events. Five swimmers and diversrecorded at least two individual event wins during the meet. NicoleMaglich, Julie Broms, and Griet Buelens each had four wins betweenthe two meets. Elaine Chan competed in her first two meets as aBuckeye and won three events. Two of the wins came in the 50-yardfreestyle, in which she recorded an NCAA “B” qualifying time inboth meets. Maglich and Buelens also recorded NCAA “B” cut times inthe 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard butterfly, respectively.The Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team swam past Ohio,143-120. The team swept all 16 events and claimed the Top 2 spotsin all but two of the events. In five events, Buckeyes FelipeTravesso, Marty Tomes and Wes Weiser each had a double-event winmeet. Freshmen Jacob Busch and Scott Blake recorded their firstindividual event wins as Buckeyes. Busch’s win came in the 500-yardfreestyle, while Blake’s was in the 400-yard individual medley. TheOhio State synchronized swimming team kicks off the 2006 seasonSaturday when it hosts the OSU Tri-Meet vs. Keuka and Michigan at 1p.m. at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
The Buckeyes, who were runner-ups at the Collegiate National championships last year, boasts a returning upper class of seven seniors and five juniors.
The women’s tennis team opens its dual season with two gamesthis Saturday. The Buckeyes will host Cincinnati at 10 a.m. andBowling Green at 4 p.m. in Jesse Owens West Recreation Center.Senior Emily Howard will serve as the team’s captain this season.The men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the 2006 indoorseason at the Kentucky Invitational Friday and Saturday.Individuals from both the men’s and women’s team fared well intheir first competition of the season.
After redshirting the 2005 season, Keturah Lofton returned to action for the women’s team and posted Top 5 finishes in all three throw events. She won the weight throw with a mark of 67-2 1/4, falling just shy of a personal best. Lofton added a runner-up mark of 145-6 in the discus and a fifth-place score of 44-10 3/4 in the shot put. Junior Jenna Harris scored two Top 3 finishes Saturday, racing to a runner-up mark in the 60-meter dash in 7.50 and claiming third in the 200m with a time of 24.2. The 4x400m relay team took third in 3:44.93. Additionally, freshman Ayrizanna Favours was third in the 400m, posting a time of 55.96.
For the men, freshman Jeff See made his collegiate debut and finished fourth in the 3,000-meter run. His time of 8:15.14 finished behind winner Rob Myers, formerly of Ohio State and now a competitor with Reebok. Also on the track, Todd Dutch was fourth in the 200m in 21.56. In field events, Marios Iacovou took third in the high jump at 6-7 1/2 and Brandon Cathcart placed fourth in the triple jump, making his collegiate debut with a leap of 49-8 1/4.
Men’s volleyball has moved to ninth in the CSTV/AVCA Men’sCoaches Top 15 Poll after three wins last week pushed the record to5-0. The Buckeyes will play in the Outrigger Invitational this weekfacing No. 5 UCLA (2-2) Wednesday, No. 7 Hawaii (1-1) Thursday andNo. 11 Penn State (1-1) Friday. Last week Ohio State defeatedRutgers-Newark, 3-0 and twice defeated UC-San Diego, 3-1. The OhioState wrestling team completed the Virginia Duals and fourdifferent wrestlers went 3-1 on the weekend. Nathaniel Augustson(Sr., Rio Rancho, N.M./Rio Rancho) compiled three decisions andReece Humphrey (Fr., Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) scored afall, major decision and decision. J Jaggers (Fr., Northfield,Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) recorded two falls and a decision, whileKirk Nail (So., Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) tallied a major decision,decision and benefited from a forfeit.
The Buckeyes begin the Big Ten season when they travel to Bloomington, Ind., Friday to face Indiana at 7 p.m. at University Gym. OSU then will meet Virginia and Virginia Tech, in pair of dual meets Sunday. Ohio State will match-up against the Cavaliers at noon at the Memorial Gymnasium before taking on the Hokies at 5 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
The Ohio State cheerleaders finished 12th at the 2006 UCACollege Nationals at Walt Disney World’s Wide World of SportsComplex Sunday in Orlando, Fla. The University of Kentucky won the2006 National Championship. The Buckeye duo of Tina Meier and BenSchreiber finished ninth in the partner stunt competition Saturday.Ohio State finished sixth last season after finishing 15th at the2004 nationals. The Buckeyes were seventh in 2003 and were sixth inboth 2000 and 2002. Ohio State won the 1993 College CheerleadingNational Championship and finished second in 2001. The nationalcompetition will be televised by ESPN at a later date.
