Q: You were a three-year letterwinner in basketball in high school, but is that really your true love?
A: Basketball was always my favorite sport. You can’t really play football by yourself, but you can play basketball by yourself and that’s what I would do all day when I was growing up.
Q: You probably didn’t take up as much of the paint then as you do now.
A: Actually I was pretty big then, too. I weighed 285 pounds as a senior but I would run the floor, you know. I was good for a 10-and-10 (10 points, 10 rebounds) every night. I had pretty good feet and I knew it would help me in football.
Q: And when you got to Ohio State you started bulking up pretty quick?
A: Yeah I think I put on 10 pounds the first week I was here. You could eat as much as you wanted and we were lifting a lot, too.
Q: What was your favorite meal back home?
A: Thanksgiving was huge for us. My mom would come out of hibernation for Thanksgiving and make everything you could think of.
Q: Your father played for the Cleveland Browns for three seasons and your hometown of Macedonia is about 40 minutes from Cleveland, so you were probably a huge Browns fan, right?
A: Most definitely. We would go to games or watch them on TV religiously and we had tons of memorabilia and game balls all around the house.
Q: Did you ever sit in the “dog pound” in Cleveland Municipal Stadium?
A: Nope, we had the “alumni seats” but they were pretty close to the dog pound.
Q: Growing up, did you ever play any other positions besides offensive tackle?
A: When I was a little kid I was too big to play in my age group of our youth league because of the weight limit, so I had to play with the older kids and they put me at fullback. I also played defensive end and defensive tackle and even played some running back in middle school.
Q: Any 100-yard games?
A: (Laughing)… Nope. They only gave me the ball a few times so I didn’t have too many stats.
Q: You are quite well known for being just about the best-dressed player when it’s time to put suits on. When did that start?
A: My dad is like that so even when I was little we were dressing up nice for church and things like that. And every Easter I would get a new suit and when I was starting to get recruited my mom was always telling me I had to get really dressed up for different things. Then it just kind of carried over to college and game days.
Q: What is your favorite hobby?
A: I like to listen to music but I love movies.
Q: Seen any good movies this summer?
A: Crash was pretty good, and I can’t wait to see War of the Worlds.
Q: Did you play against any of your current OSU teammates in high school?
A: Sure, like Roy Hall, Marcel Frost, Tyler Everett and Mike Kudla.
Q: Did you ever talk to those guys during the game about coming to Ohio State?
A: Yeah I talked to them, especially Roy because we had already committed to come to Ohio State. Tyler had already committed, too, but he was playing defensive back and I didn’t get down the field that far.
Q: Do you have anything in mind to do with your communication degree when you graduate?
A: I wouldn’t mind having a car dealership. That has a lot to do with communication. I would also like to be a football commentator on the radio. I guess we’ll see where my career takes me to see if that door opens.
