Women’s Soccer Falls to Michigan State, 1-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team lost to Michigan State, 1-0, Sunday at Old College Field in East Lansing, Mich. The Buckeyes (3-4-2; 0-2-0 Big Ten) will try to garner their first conference win when the play host to Illinois at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The match will be Ohio State’s first home game since playing Kentucky at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Sept. 11.
Neither team was able to get on the board in the first half, as Ohio State and Michigan State tallied four and 10 shots in the stanza, respectively. All four Buckeye shots were on goal, but Spartan goalkeeper Nicole Galas made the stops. OSU keeper, Staci Sinkway (Jr., Mission Viejo, Calif./So Cal Blues) helped keep Ohio State in the match, making five saves. The Buckeyes had two corner kicks compared to the Spartans’ seven going into the break.
MSU jumped out to the 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the second half. Emma Harris scored off a pass from teammates Dana Voorheis and Jenee Witherspoon at the 46:50 mark. Ohio State, who registered three shots in the half to Michigan State’s 11, was unable to answer the Spartan goal. Sinkway recorded three saves in the half and MSU had one team save.
“Obviously it was a disappointing weekend,” Lori Walker, head coach, said. “It is a disappointing way to open the Big Ten season. We are playing well for 20 minutes at a time, but the game is 90 minutes long.”
On the day, Michigan State out shot Ohio State 21-7 and had the corner kicks advantage, 10-2. Sinkway notched eight saves, while Galas had four.
