Sophomore defender Eric Brunner (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto/Maryland)was named the Big Ten Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the WeekMonday and was named to the College Soccer News National Team ofthe Week. The honors for Brunner come one day after he was namedthe Most Valuable Player of the Penn State/Nike Classic, where heled the Buckeyes to two wins, including a 2-1 victory over No. 17UCLA Sunday in the tournament championship. Brunner has helped theBuckeyes post a 5-1-0 record to start the season and climb to ashigh as No. 11 in the national polls this week. He had the assiston Kevin Nugent’s goal against UCLA, which broke a scoreless tie inthe eventual 2-1 OSU win. He has started all six games for theBuckeyes this season and scored the game-winning goal in overtimeat Furman Sept. 11. Named to the women’s volleyball Buckeye ClassicAll-Tournament Team, Ami Stevens average 4 kills and 4.11 digs pergame for the two matches. Stevens had a match-high 20.5 pointsagainst Pittsburgh with 19 kills, an ace serve and an assist block.She added 15 digs and three assists. In the BYU match, Stevens had18.5 points with 17 kill, an ace serve and an assist block adding aseason-high 22 digs and three assists. She had a season-high 22digs against Brigham Young. Stevens handled 101 serve receptions inthe two matches without an error. Against Pittsburgh 21 of her 51serve receptions (.412) went for kills while she was 18 of 50(.360) for kills against Brigham Young

Winning its fourth game in a row, the men’s soccer team toppedCal State Fullerton and No. 17 UCLA last weekend to win the PennState/Nike Classic. The tournament title was Ohio State’s secondconsecutive and upped the Buckeyes’ record to 5-1-0 on the season.Sophomore Eric Brunner was named the Classic’s Most Valuable Playerand earned Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors Monday alongwith a spot on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.The Buckeyes travel to Bowling Green at 5 p.m. Friday and hostKentucky at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The No. 14-ranked field hockey teamwent 2-0 last week, coming back from two goals down to beat No.14-ranekd Louisville in overtime, 4-3, and defeating MissouriState, 2-0. Senior Lucy Clayton led the Buckeyes in the wins toearn Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors, posting a hattrick in the comeback over the Cardinals.
Tuesday, the Buckeyes downed Ball State, 6-1, behind three goals and an assist from Clayton.
The Buckeyes open Big Ten play with two home games this week. OSU will take on Michigan at 4 p.m. Friday and Iowa at 1 p.m. Sunday at North Turf Field.
The women’s soccer team is coming off a two-game weekend split,dropping a close 1-0 contest to Harvard Sept. 15 before beatingNortheastern 2-1 Sept. 17. Lisa Collison (Fr., Niagara Falls,Ontario) tallied her team leading fifth goal vs. the Huskies afterscoring the gamewinner with less than five minutes remaining inregulation. Fellow freshman Caitlin Colfer also registered twoassists in the match, upping her assist total to three on theseason.
The Buckeyes return to the road when they face Michigan at 7 p.m. Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich., and Michigan State at noon Sunday in East Lansing.
The men’s cross country team won for the second time in twomeets this season Saturday at the Friendship Invitational at JohnBryan Park in Yellow Springs, Ohio. The Buckeye women’s team placedsecond in the meet hosted by Cedarville University.
Glenn Collins posted the best time for Ohio State men, completing the 8-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 25.7 seconds (25:25.7) to place third. Collins was followed by five of his teammates as Buckeyes claimed places 4-8 and clocked times of less that 25:28. For the women, freshman Rachel Stichter and junior Melanie Price placed third and fourth, respectively. Stichter completed the 5K race in 18:22.84 and Price followed at 18:24.95.
Jack Taylor, a junior from Novi, Mich, tied for 10th with ascore of 221 (77-69-75) to help the men’s golf team to aninth-place finish at the Inverness Invitational in Toledo, Ohio.Fifteen teams competed in the 54-hole event, which concludedTuesday with an 18-hole final round. Ohio State shot 302 in theopening round, good enough for a tie for the 10th position after 18holes. The Buckeyes cut five strokes in the second round to finishtied for sixth at (302-297) 599. The Buckeyes finished the eventwith a 302 over the final 18 holes. Colin Biles, a junior fromColumbus, finished tied for 19th with a score of 224 (76-73-75).Women’s volleyball finish second in the Buckeye Classic losing toBrigham Young in the championship match in five games. OSU defeatedPittsburgh 3-1 in the semifinals. Danielle Meyer and Ami Stevenswere named to the All-Tournament team. The Buckeyes begin Big TenConference play this week when OSU hosts Purdue Friday and IllinoisSaturday. The softball team began fall practice last Thursday andtravels to the Kent State Fall Tournament this Sunday. Tenth-yearhead coach Linda Kalafatis welcomed back 11 veterans and fournewcomers for the 2005-06 squad, which is coming off a 32-17 recordin 2005 and a fourth-place finish in the Big Ten.
