Senior goalkeeper Ray Burse Jr. was named the Big Ten Men’sSoccer Defensive Player of the Week Monday after earning defensiveMVP honors of the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational last weekend.In 167 minutes in goal in the tournament, he did not allow a goaland picked up his second shutout of the season. Burse is 3-1-0 thisseason with a 0.26 goals-allowed average, having allowed just onegoal in 352:31 minutes. He owns 10 career shutouts and has earnedfour Big Ten Player of the Week awards. Burse was a second-teamAll-Big Ten pick in 2004. Field hockey junior Saskia Mueller had ateam-best four goals and eight points in OSU’s two wins last week.Against Albany, Mueller got the Buckeyes on the board with apenalty-stroke goal just 1:01 into the game. She gave OSU atwo-goal edge with a goal in the second half off a penalty corner.Her two goals came on two shots. Against Maine, Mueller scored thegamewinner unassisted 15:30 into the game, as the Buckeyes postedthe shutout. She added her second goal of the game and fourth ofthe weekend when she converted a penalty stroke 53 seconds into thesecond half. Entering the weekend, Mueller had four career goals in38 games. She already has surpassed the then-career best threegoals she scored a year ago.
Athletics Good Stuff
Women’s volleyball (6-1) won four road matches last week,winning at Cleveland State, 3-2, and defeating East Carolina, 3-0,Chicago State, 3-0, and Bowling Green, 3-2, to win the BowlingGreen Invitational. Ami Stevens and Danielle Meyer were named tothe All-Tournament Team. The Buckeyes will host the Buckeye Classicthis weekend beginning Friday with Brigham Young (5-0) facing Duke(5-1) at 5 p.m. and Ohio State hosting Pittsburgh (6-4) at 7 p.m.in St. John Arena. Saturday’s consolation and championship matcheswill be played at Centerburg High School in Centerburg, Ohio. OhioState will play in the 7 p.m. match with Pittsburgh playing in the5 p.m. match. The men’s and women’s cross country team opened its2005 season Saturday by sweeping the Xavier Invitational. The men’ssquad won with a perfect score of 15, while the women’s team toppedits standings with 28 points.
Sophomore John Ealy won the first meet of his career Saturday in a winning time of 15:26.34 in the 5K race. He was the first of seven successive Buckeyes to cross the finish line. Ealy was named Big Ten Runner of the Week for his performance.
For the women, sophomore Melanie Price took runner-up honors Saturday and led the Buckeyes to their first meet win in four seasons.
Both teams remain in Ohio for meet No. 2 of the season. Ohio State travels to Yellow Springs, Ohio, Saturday for the 15th Annual Cedarville Invitational at Cedarville University.
The field hockey team went 2-0 last weekend, downing AlbanyFriday, 4-1, and shutting out Maine Sunday, 6-0. The Buckeyes wereled by Saskia Mueller’s four goals and eight points. In addition,as a squad, OSU held the two teams combined to just one goal andfour shots.
OSU continues its homestand when it hosts Louisville at 3 p.m. Wednesday and Missouri State at 11 a.m. Saturday. Both games will be held at North Turf Field.
The women’s soccer team will try to break the women’s soccernational attendance record of 6,527 during its match vs. Penn StateOct. 14. The contest, which will air on CSTV at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct.17, is a re-match vs. the 2004 Big Ten Tournament runner-up. Lastseason, on their home field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, theBuckeyes defeated the Nittany Lions, 2-0, capturing their secondconference tournament title in three years.
Ohio State is coming off a one-game weekend, in which it tied Kentucky, 1-1, Sept. 11 in its first home match of the season. Freshman Lisa Collison (Niagara Falls, Ontario/Burlington Flames) continues to score goals for the Buckeyes, as she tallied a goal for the Scarlet and Gray at the end of the first half. Collison has scored in four of Ohio State’s five games, including a goal and an assist in the team’s season opener against Kent State Aug. 26.
Ohio State returns to the road to face Harvard and Northeastern at the Harvard Invitational in Cambridge, Mass. The Buckeyes are slated to meet the Crimson at noon Thursday and the Huskies at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The men’s soccer team went 2-0-0 last weekend with wins overCoastal Carolina and host Furman to win the Diadora/Spinx FurmanInvitational. Ohio State travels to the Penn State/Nike Classic thisweekend to face Cal State Fullerton and UCLA. The women’sgymnastics team and coaching staff were among the dozens ofvolunteers who filled the downtown Thursday for Columbus Unites, a13-hour effort that raised nearly a half-million dollars to helpthe victims of Hurricane Katrina. The event, organized in part byColumbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman, was publicized by a total of 28media outlets which covered the day-long event as the Buckeyegymnasts saw their collection buckets filled with checks and cash.The 2005 NCAA Division I Men’s Frozen Four, hosted by Ohio State,has been nominated for a 2005 SportsTravel award. The event isnominated in the best sports events in a series or circuit in thecollegiate category. Fellow nominees include the 2005 College WorldSeries, 2005 Softball World Series, 2005 NAIA Division I Men’sBasketball Tournament, 2005 NCAA Division I Men’s BasketballTournament and the 2005 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball FinalFour. The winner of the award will be announced at the TEAMS 2005Conference & Expo in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Nov. 2-5. Anthony Gilardi has been hired as an assistant coach forthe Ohio State men’s lacrosse team, head coach Joe Breschiannounced Monday. Gilardi, a four-year letterwinner for theBuckeyes (2001-04), served as the team’s volunteer assistant coachlast season, as well as the assistant coach at Denison University.
Gilardi, a native of Baldwin, N.Y., completed his collegiate career in 2004 as a First Team All-Great Western Lacrosse League selection and the Buckeyes’ leading scorer (17-24-41), helping the squad to the outright league title and a second-consecutive berth in the NCAA tournament. He was a second-team All-GWLL honoree in 2002. Gilardi had 131 career points to rank 13th in program history, while his 57 helpers are tied for seventh. At the conclusion of his Buckeye career, Gilardi signed a free-agent contract with the Long Island Lizards of Major League Lacrosse. Gilardi, 23, graduated from Ohio State in December 2004.
