COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 12th-ranked Ohio State (5-1) women’s volleyball team, behind a season-high 17 points from Ami Stevens (So., Centerburg, Ohio) defeated Chicago State (0-8), 3-0 (30-18, 30-20, 30-20) in the second round of the Bowling Green Invitational Saturday. Stevens had a match-high 15 kills (.387), one ace serve, two assist blocks and added eight digs against the Cougars. Ashley Kiel (Jr., Allenton, Wis.) contributed 14 points for the Buckeyes with 13 kills (.458), an ace serve and five digs. Chicago State’s Zuzana Pokovicova scored a team-high 8.5 points for the Cougars with Shakeila Castile-Jones adding 7.5. Pokovicova had six kills, two ace serve and an assist block while Castile-Jones recorded five kills, two solo blocks and one assist block.
Ohio State opened game one with a 6-0 run with two kills each from Stevens and Nicole Britenriker (So., Cincinnati, Ohio), a Stevens-Britenriker block and a Danielle Meyer (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) ace serve. At 12-9 OSU, an eight-point run gave the Buckeyes a 20-9 lead. A kill by Kiel closed the game for OSU at 30-18. Ohio State hit .050 for the game but Chicago State hit only -.229.
Game two saw four early ties with the last coming at six-all. A Chicago State service error and kills from Kiel and Britenriker gave the Buckeyes a 9-6 lead. The Cougars cut the Buckeye lead to 10-9 with a Pokovicova kill but three kills by Kiel, one from Meyer and a Chicago State error opened up a 15-9 OSU lead. Kiel’s kill closed out the game at 30-20 for the Buckeyes. OSU hit .366 for the game to .152 for the Cougars. Chicago State opened game three with a 2-0 lead from a Catherine Everist ace serve and an OSU error. The Buckeyes responded with six consecutive points to open a 6-2 lead. A kill from Stevens and a Meyer ace serve tied the game at two. Another Meyer ace, a Britenriker kill and two Cougar errors completed the scoring run. At 29-20, a Jackie Schardt (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) kill closed out the game at 30-20 for a 3-0 Buckeye win. Ohio State hit .242 for the game to -.030 for Chicago State.
In the match, Ohio State out hit the Cougars, .219 to -.040. The Buckeyes had a 46-23 margin in kills and a seven to four advantage in ace serves. OSU’s Meyer equaled her career high with four aces in the match. Defensively, OSU edged the Cougars in digs, 44-42, with Chicago State’s Katie Zillner recording a match-high 15. At the net, The Buckeyes had a 7.5 to 5 margin in team blocks with OSU’s Meyer recording a match-high five assist blocks. Buckeye setter Marisa Main (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) had 21 assists in the match with Schardt adding 13. Everist recorded 15 assists for Chicago State.
Ohio State will face Bowling Green tonight at 7 p.m. in the final match of the Invitational.
