Columbus, Ohio – For the third consecutive game, Team USA took advantage of a decisive edge in rebounds to top Taiwan, 109-57, Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the 2005 World University Games in Izmir, Turkey. Five Americans scored in double figures and Buckeyes Jessica Davenport and Brandie Hoskins tallied eight and six points, respectively, as the U.S. improved to 5-0 and set up a semifinal game against Russia at 8 a.m. (EDT) Wednesday.
Team USA pulled down 58 rebounds to Taiwan’s 16 and shot better than 60 percent for the second time in five games. The Americans connected on 49-of-80 attempts (61 percent) and held Taiwan to 27 percent (20-for-75).
Taiwan stayed with Team USA through the first quarter, tying the game at 13 before LSU’s Sylvia Fowles went on an 8-0 run of her own to help the U.S. to a 23-15 lead at the end of one period. The U.S. extended to a 46-28 lead at the break, benefiting from four second-quarter free throws by Davenport (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/ Independence).
In the second half, Team USA connected on three attempts at the start of the third stanza as part of a 12-1 run that put the Americans ahead 72-41 at the end of the third. A 37-16 fourth-quarter score in favor of the U.S. helped punch Team USA’s ticket to the semis.
The U.S. was led in scoring by Candice Dupree’s (Temple) 16 points. In addition to Dupree, Duke’s Monique Currie and Fowles finished with 14 apiece.
In its five games, the U.S. has outscored its opponents by 45.4 points per game and posted a plus-26.8 rebounding margin. As a team, the Americans are shooting 56.5 percent (209-370) from the field and limiting opponents to 31.9 percent (96-301) shooting.
Individually, Davenport ranks third on the team in scoring at 12.3 ppg. in five starts. She is averaging 4.6 rebounds a game, including five Tuesday. Hoskins (Jr., Dayton, Ohio/ Chaminade-Julienne) has contributed nearly eight points a contest and is third on the squad with 13 assists.
