Athletes of the Week
Danielle Meyer averaged 4.14 kills per game on the weekend inthe women’s volleyball team’s 3-1 win over Northwestern and 0-3loss to No. 11 Wisconsin. Meyer added two ace serves, 21 digs andfour assist blocks in the two matches. She also handled 12 servereceptions with no errors. Meyer had a match-high 17.7 pointsagainst Northwestern with 14 kills (.324), two ace serves and threeassist blocks and added 11 digs. Against Wisconsin she had amatch-high 14.5 points with 15 kills (.125) and an assist block.She added 10 digs in the contest. Returning All-American BrianOlinger placed in the Top 10 for the second consecutive season tolead the men’s cross country team to a second-place finish at the2005 Big Ten championships. The senior from Fresno, Ohio led theOhio State effort with a 10th-place time of 24:41.98 in the8-kilometer race. Olinger finished seventh in 2004.
Athletics Good Stuff
The men’s cross country team placed three individuals in theTop 20 en route to claiming a second-place standing at the 2005 BigTen Championships Sunday at the University of Minnesota’s LesBolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn. The Ohio State women’steam improved on its 2004 league standing by two spots Sunday,taking ninth place with 257. Michigan won the women’s title with ateam score of 42.
Individually, returning All-American Brian Olinger placed in the Top 10 for the second consecutive season at the league meet. The senior from Fresno, Ohio led the Ohio State effort with a 10th-place time of 24:41.98 in the 8-kilometer race. For the women, junior Nicole Gliem headed the Buckeye effort for the fourth time in her four races this season. The Columbus native placed 25th on the 6K course in a time of 21:01.24.
The field hockey team wrapped up the regular season scheduleOct. 29 with a 3-2 loss at Michigan State for a final conferencerecord of 3-3. Overall, OSU is 14-5 this season. The Buckeye goalswere scored by junior Saskia Mueller, her eighth, and seniorLeticia Fragapane, her 10th.
Ohio State next heads to Iowa City, Iowa, to compete in the Big Ten Tournament Nov. 4-6. As the third seed in the tournament, the Buckeyes will face No 6-seed Michigan State for the second time in less than a week. The teams face off in the third quarterfinal game Friday with a 4 p.m. ET start time. The two semifinal games will be played Saturday, with the championship game Sunday at 1 p.m.
The women’s soccer team posted a season-best five goals in its5-0 shutout over Morehead State Oct. 28. Lisa Collison scored her12th and 13th goals in the match, tying teammate Lara Dickenmannfor first in the OSU goals single-season record book. CarletaArbulu also added two goals and Dickenmann posted two assists.Melissa Miller started the scoring for the Buckeyes with anunassisted free kick in the first half and Jennifer Greenwoodtallied her first assist of the year in the Buckeyes’ seasonfinale. The men’s soccer team improved to 9-6-2 with a 2-1 win overNorthwestern last Friday. The Buckeyes were ranked No. 10 in theGreat Lakes region last Tuesday and should move up this week asOhio State continues to build momentum for the Big Ten tournamentand a postseason bid to the NCAA tournament. The Buckeyes hostMichigan at 7:30 p.m. Friday before traveling to the Big Tentournament next weekend, hosted by Northwestern.
The tennis programs are hosting the ITA National Intercollegiate Championships at the Racquet Club of Columbus Thursday-Sunday. There are 32-player singles 16-team doubles fields for both men and women. The championship matches will be played Sunday. Play starts at 8:30 am Thursday and Friday, and 10am Saturday and Sunday.
Ohio State has had men’s champions the last two years. Jeremy Wurtzman won singles in 2003, and Scott Green and Ross Wilson won the doubles title last year. The Buckeyes will have entries in both doubles and singles this year.
The women’s tennis team concluded play Monday at the Big GreenInvitational at the Allie Boss Tennis Center and Alan GordonPavilion on the campus of Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. Theevent consisted of two 32-player singles flights and one 32-teamdoubles flight. The Buckeyes won the championship in Flight Asingles and in doubles. Sonia Ruzimovsky (Jr., Brooklyn,N.Y./Brooklyn Technical) and Angela DiPastina (Fr., Titusville,N.J./Hun School of Princeton) won five straight matches anddefeated Anela Dujstic and Dana Gordon of Rutgers by a score of 8-6in the final to win the doubles championship. In the A singles maindraw, DiPastina dropped her first match to Katie Draganova ofBoston University, 3-6, 6-2, 11-9. DiPastina went on to win hernext four matches and defeated Cindy Chu of Harvard, 6-3, 6-2, inthe finals to win the consolation bracket. The men’s hockey teamfaces Miami in a home-and-home series this weekend. The teams willmeet at 7:35 p.m. Friday in Oxford, Ohio, and at 8:05 p.m. Saturdayin Value City Arena in Columbus. The No. 13/14-ranked Buckeyes arecoming off two losses at Western Michigan last weekend. Juniordefenseman Sean Collins led the Buckeyes with two goals in the gamelast Saturday, while sophomore forward Sam Campbell had twoassists. The women’s hockey team dropped three of four points toMinnesota State Oct. 28-29 with a tie and a loss at OSU Ice Rink.Minnesota State salvaged a tie Friday scoring a goal with just overa minute in regulation for a final score of 2-2. Freshman forwardHayley Klassen scored both goals for OSU. The Buckeyes were withinone goal Saturday at 3-2, but MSU had a three-goal third period toseal the win at 6-2. Both Ohio State goals were scored by juniorco-captain Amber Bowman. The weekend marked the most points OSU hasever allowed to Minnesota State in a series.
The Buckeyes next travel to Minneapolis to face No. 4 Minnesota Nov. 4-5 at Ridder Arena. Games begin at 8:07 p.m. (ET) both Friday and Saturday.
The No. 15 women’s golf team completed the fall season tied for11th at the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Championship Sunday in Knoxville,Tenn. The Buckeyes shot 920 (313-302-305) at the Cherokee CountryClub (par 71, 5,932) at the 54-hole tournament. Ohio State tiedNorth Carolina. Stephanie Connelly led the Buckeyes individually.She finished tied for 18th with a score of 226 (77-74-75). OhioState will next play at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge inPalos Verdes, Calif., an event in which Ohio State will serve asthe host school. The rifle team will compete at Akron Saturday withthe John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The scheduled match lastweek with the Massachusetts Maritime Academy was cancelled. Big Tenwomen’s basketball coaches and a 22-member media panel selected2004-05 co-conference champion Ohio State as the preseason favoritefor the upcoming season in an announcement made at the league’smedia day Sunday. The coaches and media also chose JessicaDavenport as the 2005 Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year.Davenport, who earned the same honor following the 2004-05 regularseason, was a unanimous selection by the media. No. 19 women’svolleyball split home matches last week defeated Northwestern, 3-1and falling 0-3 to No. 11 Wisconsin. Danielle Meyer scored amatch-high 17.5 points against Northwestern with Amanda Milleradding 17. Setter Marisa Main recorded her fourth consecutivetriple double with 12 kills (.786), 42 assists and 15 digs. AgainstWisconsin, Meyer had a match-high 15.5 points with NicoleBritenriker adding 14.5. The Buckeyes go on the road this week toface No. 3 Penn State Wednesday (8 p.m. live on CSTV) and faceIndiana Saturday at 7 p.m. Five players have been named captainsfor the men’s lacrosse team for the 2006 season, head coach JoeBreschi announced last week. Seniors Andrew Bender, Gary Bining,Jason Bloom, Ben Wolff and Brian Yontz were selected by a vote oftheir teammates. The men’s gymnastics team tied Illinois for theNo. 2 spot in the 2006 preseason coaches’ poll released by GymInfo.Defending champion Oklahoma earned the No. 1 spot, followed by OhioState and Illinois.
Ohio State returns 11 letterwinners from the team that earned second place at the NCAA men’s gymnastics championships last year, including senior three-time All-American and 2005 NCAA high bar champion, Ronald Ferris (Austintown, Ohio/ Ohio Gymnastics Institute). In addition, three-time All-American sophomore DJ Bucher (Mason, Ohio/ Queen City Gymnastics) returns in 2005 after earning a spot on the U.S. Men’s Gymnastics Senior National Team in August and competing at the World Championship Team trials in October.
The men’s swimming and diving team ushers in a new era at theMcCorkle Aquatic Pavilion Friday at 6 p.m. when it plays host toMiami University. The Buckeyes, which finished sixth at the 2005Big Ten Championships and sent four student-athletes to the NCAAmeet, were ranked 20th prior to this season. It is the first timethe Buckeyes have been ranked in the preseason since 1997. Thewomen’s swimming and diving team begins its 2005-06 campaign on theroad, taking on Bowling Green Thursday at 5 p.m. The women’s teamsent three student-athletes to the 2005 NCAA championships and hadits first Big Ten championship swimmer since 1995. The women’s teamwill begin its tenure at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion Nov. 11 in adouble-dual meet with Michigan and Purdue.
