Big Ten Leads All Conferences in First-Team CoSIDA Academic All-America Selections – Ohio State Buckeyes

PARK RIDGE, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference, along with the Southeastern and Big 12, ranked among the top of the NCAA Division I Conferences in 2003-04 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America selections.
The Big Ten finished the 2003-04 campaign with 21 first-team All-America honorees – the most among any Division I Conference – and 34 overall selections to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Teams.
The SEC and the Big 12 led all Conferences with 35 All-Americans each. The Big East was fourth with 25 student-athletes, while the Missouri Valley was fifth with 21.
Among the Big Ten’s 21 first-team selections, three Conference student-athletes were honored by CoSIDA as Academic All-America of the Year award winners. Michigan’s Lindsey Gallo (women’s track), Ohio State’s Craig Krenzel (football), and Penn State’s Kelly Mazzante (women’s basketball) all received the honor in their respective sports.
Along with its 21 first-team selections, the Big Ten had 11 on the second team and two on the third team.
CoSIDA selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women’s volleyball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s track & field/cross country, women’s track & field/cross country, men’s at-large and women’s at-large. A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions. Football consists of just first and second teams.
