Ohio State student-athletes Allison Hanna and Dan Taylor havebeen named the 2004 Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year and MaleAthlete of the Year, respectively. The award was voted on by aninterdepartmental panel of Ohio State administrators and coachesand was based on the 2003-04 season only.
As the top Buckeye athletes, Hanna and Taylor will represent Ohio State on the Big Ten ballot to select the Suzy Favor Female Athlete of the Year and the Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year. Each school in the Big Ten nominates one male and one female student-athlete and a panel of media selects the winners, which will be announced later this summer. Hanna, a senior co-captain and an NGCA First Team All-American, led the Buckeyes this season with a 72.6 stroke average during the 2003-04 season. She posted nine Top 5 finishes, including wins at the Lady Northern Intercollegiate and the Mercedes-Benz Championships. Hanna, a three-time All-Big Ten selection, placed second at the Big Ten Championships and earned a 12th-place finish at the 2004 NCAA Championships. She is a three-time All-Big Ten selection and a two-time All-American. She was named the squad’s 2004 Most Valuable Player.
Taylor concluded his Ohio State career at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships by earning his eighth and ninth All-America honors after taking runner-up in the shot put and breaking his own OSU and Big Ten record to claim third in the hammer throw. At indoor nationals in March, Taylor completed an undefeated indoor season by becoming the first student-athlete in NCAA history to sweep the shot put and weight throw events. Taylor’s career highlights include seven Big Ten titles and three Big Ten Athlete of the Year awards, following the 2003 indoor and outdoor seasons and 2004 outdoor campaign. Taylor is the American collegiate record holder in the indoor weight throw and completed his Ohio State career as the owner of three all-time program marks and a pair of Big Ten records. Internationally, Taylor threw in the 2003 Pan American Games, where he was the top collegiate performer in the shot put. In July, Taylor will attempt to gain a spot on the 2004 United States Olympic squad in the shot put.
Hanna is the third women’s golfer to be named the OSU Female Athlete of the Year and the first since Amy Langhals won the honor in 1997. Taylor is the fifth track and field athlete to be named the OSU Male Athlete of the Year.
Hanna and Taylor will be honored at halftime of a football game this fall. The game will be determined at a later date.
Ohio State student-athletes Jamey Houle and Mitch Richeson werenamed to the 2004 Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Team, theCollege Sports Information Directors of America announced Tuesday.Houle, an All-American gymnast, and Richeson, an All-Americandiver, were named to the first team. The men’s at-large categoryfor Academic All-America honors contains the sports of fencing,golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming,tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. Student-athletes thatearned First Team At-Large Academic All-District honors wereeligible for the All-America team. The track and field teamconcluded the 2004 outdoor season in impressive fashion, sendingseven individuals to the All-American podium. Four on the men’steam accounted for five All-America honors as the squad posted itsbest national finish since 1993, claiming a tie for fourth placewith 30 team points. Senior thrower Dan Taylor accounted for 14points with a runner-up finish in the shot put and an OSU and BigTen record-setting effort to take third in the hammer throw. Taylorfinished his career at OSU as a five-time outdoor All-American. Onthe track, senior Joel Brown scored a third-place time in the110-meter hurdles, besting his own OSU record with a mark of 13.43.The distance unit also made a major contribution as senior RobMyers placed fourth in the 1,500-meter run, while junior AaronFisher crossed the finish line in the 3,000-meter steeplechase infourth place as well. Junior Brian Olinger joined Fisher in thesteeple and ended the race in 12th position.
The women’s team added a trio of All-Americans. Leading the way was junior jumper Rosalind Goodwin, who posted her first outdoor All-America finish by breaking her own OSU mark in the triple jump at 44 feet, 7 1/2 inches for sixth place. Also scoring a sixth-place finish was sophomore thrower Amarachi Ukabam, who exceeded 52 feet in the shot put. Junior Keturah Lofton equaled her Ohio State and Big Ten standard of 204 feet, 7 inches to stake eighth place in the hammer. Senior Molly Logan also qualified for nationals, but bowed out of the 100-meter hurdles in the preliminary rounds.
Women’s basketball player Jessica Davenport scoreddouble-digits during all four contests in Australia with the 2004Big Ten Basketball Foreign Tour Team. Davenport averaged 15.0points and 6.8 boards per outing as a member of the undefeated12-player roster, which was under the direction of Indiana’s KathiBennett. Bennett’s team went 4-0 in Australia during the 11-daytrip. Ty Tucker, men’s tennis head coach, and members of the 2004team celebrated its record-breaking season at the annual banquetJune 9. Several team awards were given to players for theirperformance during the 2004 campaign. Senior Jeremy Wurtzman wasnamed the team’s Most Valuable Player and received the Power Clubaward from the strength and conditioning staff. Senior BrentonContini and sophomore Scott Green both were given the Buckeye Awardfor their team dedication while freshman Devin Mullings was namedthe Most Valuable Player for his efforts during Ohio State’s NCAArun. Tucker guided his squad to their finest campaign in programhistory. The Buckeyes finished the season ranked No. 12 in thenation, with a 26-5 overall record and advanced to the NCAAquarterfinal round. Women’s lacrosse midfielder Regina Oliver hasbeen named to the United States Developmental Team for 2004-2005.The 24-member team was selected after tryouts at Loyola College inBaltimore, Maryland. The team will participate in events leading upto the 2005 International Federation of Women’s LacrosseAssociations (IFWLA) World Cup, which will be held at the UnitedStates Naval Academy. The trials for the 2005 World Cup will takeplace in the fall of 2004. Men’s lacrosse seniors Greg Bice andTony Russo were part of a victorious North squad in the 63rd annualNorth/South All-Star Classic. Russo played 30 minutes in net andmade nine saves, while Bice had four groundballs. Russo wasselected by the Rochester Rattlers in the third round of the MajorLeague Lacrosse Collegiate Draft, while Bice was drafted by thePhiladelphia Barrage in the fourth round. Anthony Gilardi and ShaunLyons were picked up by the Long Island Lizards following thedraft. Outfielder Steve Caravati picked up two more postseasonawards June 15 when he was named a third-team All-American by theNational Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and a first-teamAll-Mideast Regional selection by the American Baseball CoachesAssociation. Caravati, a junior from Dover, Ohio (Dover), led allBig Ten batters in the regular season with a .391 batting averageand finished second in conference games with a .407 batting averageon his way to being voted as the Big Ten Player of the Year by theleague coaches. Outfielder Jacob Howell was named to the LouisvilleSlugger Freshmen All-America Baseball Team, Collegiate BaseballNewspaper announced June 11. Howell, a red-shirt freshman fromAshland, Ohio (Ashland), was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year andSecond-Team All-Big Ten selection after posting a .336 battingaverage, the second best on the team. Diver Mitch Richeson finished12th in the 3-meter springboard at the 2004 U.S. Olympic DivingTeam Trials at the St. Peters Rec-Plex in St. Peters, Mo., June8-13 He was in 11th place after the preliminary and semifinalrounds, but slipped one spot in his final six dives. Richeson, ajunior from Greenwood, Ind. (Greenwood), scored 877.02 over thethree rounds of competition. Richeson, the Big Ten Diver of theYear, qualified for the trials by finishing fifth at the 2004Speedo American Cup. Four Ohio State publications were honored bythe College Sports Information Directors of America in its annualpublications contest. The men’s hockey media guide, by Diana Sabau,Leann Parker and Greg Aylsworth, was second in the nation. Thebaseball guide, by Todd Lamb and Aylsworth, was second in thedistrict, while the softball media guide, by Tim Stried, LaurenPrice and Aylsworth, also was second in the district. The fieldhockey guide, in the single sports media guide category, by MirandaZink and Andy Fledderjohann, was first in the district. 108 OhioState student-athletes received their bachelor’s degrees duringspring commencement ceremonies June 13 in Ohio Stadium.
