The battle lines are drawn for Saturday’s Scarlet & Gray Game in Ohio Stadium.
In a draft held this afternoon at the Woody Hayes Athletics Center, the 2004 seniors chose up sides for this year’s spring practice showdown.
The teams were drafted by position, the two teams alternating at opening a specific position and then exhausting all players at that position before moving on to another area. Prior to the draft, head coach Jim Tressel named Joe Daniels as head coach of the Scarlet team and Mel Tucker as head coach of the Gray squad. The coaches then divided up the seniors before beginning the draft.
The Scarlet seniors – Lydell Ross, Branden Joe, Mike Kne, Josh Huston and John Hollins among others – won the coin toss and selected Santonio Holmes with the first pick of the draft. The Gray seniors – led by Dustin Fox, Mike Nugent, Bam Childress, Simon Fraser and Brandon Schnittker – took center Nick Mangold with their first true pick (they had taken Roy Hall from the receiver position before opening up the center position).
The Scarlet squad then went for defense and chose linebacker Bobby Carpenter with its next pick.
With the ensuing selection, the Gray squad opened the position of quarterback and tabbed Troy Smith.
Other first picks by position for the Scarlet team included Jay Richardson at defensive end, Robbie Sims at offensive tackle, Nate Salley at safety, Ashton Youboty at cornerback and Tony Pittman at tailback.
The Gray team selected tight end Louis Irizarry, defensive end Mike Kudla, defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock, offensive guard Mike Datish and linebacker Anthony Schlegel with its position picks.
Saturday’s game will kickoff at 1:05 p.m. in Ohio Stadium and will be televised by WBNS/ONN and broadcast by WBNS Radio.
Tickets currently are on sale at the Athletics Ticket Office in the Jerome Schottenstein Center and are $5.00 each.
