Athletes of the Week
Men’s volleyball senior Mark Peckham directed the Buckeyes towins over 11th-ranked Lewis and 13th-ranked IPFW. In the 3-0(30-28, 34-32, 30-21) victory over Lewis, Peckham had 47 assistsagainst the Flyers. He added a kill, three digs and an assist blockagainst Lewis. Under Peckham, the Buckeyes hit .402 in the victory.In the 3-2 (23-30, 32-30, 30-24, 27-30, 15-7) victory over IPFW tomove in a tied for first place in the MIVA with Ball State, Peckhamhad 54 assists, adding four kills, 11 digs and four assist blocks.For the two matches (eight games), Peckham recorded 101 assists(12.62 per game), 14 digs (1.75 per game) and five assist blocks(.62 per game). He directed the Buckeye office to a .316 hittingpercentage for the weekend and a 14.62 kills per game average. Inthe two matches, three Buckeye starters averaged between 3.25 and3.62 kills per game. Peckham has been chosen the SportsImports/American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I-II Men’sNational Player of the Week and the Midwestern IntercollegiateVolleyball Association Player of the Week. Men’s golf senior KevinHall captured medallist honors at the 2004 Marshall Invitational ashe fired a three-round total of 206 to win the individual crown.Hall claimed his first collegiate medallist honor with the help ofa final round 65, which tied a tournament record to propel theBuckeyes to their first tournament title since the 2003 RobertKepler Intercollegiate.

The men’s soccer team will host the Columbus Crew in the ThirdAnnual Connor Senn Memorial Match Wednesday, April 14, at 7 p.m. atJesse Owens Memorial Stadium. All proceeds from the match willbenefit the Connor Senn Memorial Scholarship Fund, which has raisedover $35,000 to date. The men’s golf team returns to action April16-17 to compete in the 2004 Robert Kepler Intercollegiate at theOhio State University Scarlet Golf Course. The Buckeyes will begunning for their second-consecutive tournament title afterfinishing first at the 2004 Marshall Invitational in Huntington, W.Va. During the event, the Buckeyes placed four individuals in theTop 10 including Kevin Hall, who claimed medallist honors in theevent with a three round total of 206. The Buckeye softball teamreturns to Columbus this week for six games at Buckeye Field. OhioState (23-14, 2-4 Big Ten) begins with a doubleheader vs.Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. Wednesday and gets back into Big Ten actionwhen the Buckeyes face Michigan State Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturdayat noon. OSU will face the Wildcats of Northwestern in two gamesbeginning at noon Sunday. The senior class of Kristi DeVries, BethMcAbier and Breana Pozzi will be honored following the game vs. theSpartans Saturday. 11th-ranked men’s volleyball (18-8, 11-3Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) moved into a tiefor first place in the MIVA with wins over 11th-ranked Lewis and13th-ranks IPFW last weekend. In OSU’s 3-0 (30-28, 34-32, 30-21)win over Lewis, Mark Greaves scored a team-high 15 kills and MikeWauligman added 14 kills while hitting a career-high .650. In theBuckeyes’ 3-2 (23-30, 32-30, 30-24, 27-30, 15-7) win over IPFW,Andy Cole had a team-high 20 kills with Wauligman adding 15 andGreaves 11. OSU setter Mark Peckham averaged 12.62 assists, 1.75digs and .62 blocks in the two matches directing a balanced officeto the victories. Ohio State now hosts 12th-ranked and co-leaderBall State Friday and Quincy Saturday in the final regular seasonhome matches. Buckeye wins over Ball State and Quincy will make theBuckeyes the MIVA regular season champion. The track and fieldteams traveled to Berkeley, Calif., for the 2004 Brutus HamiltonInvitational last weekend. Senior hurdler/sprinter Joel Brown andjunior jumper Rosalind Goodwin each turned in performances worthyof Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors as Brown ran season-besttimes to win both the 110-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash.Goodwin added season-best marks in her events as well, scoring thetop lengths in the Big Ten in both the women’s triple jump and longjump.
Senior hurdler Molly Logan also ranks at the top of the conference performance lists after winning the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 13.27 Saturday, while fellow senior Tamecia Brown clocked a conference best 2:09.12 to take runner-up in the women’s 800-meter run. The distance events also saw senior Rob Myers post a season and Big Ten best 4:03.81 to claim second in the men’s mile.
Senior thrower Dan Taylor did not accompany the team to the Hamilton. Instead, he threw in three events at the 2004 Sea Ray Relays at the University of Tennessee, where he scored Top 5 marks in all three events, including a winning heave in the shot put at 65 feet, 1/2 inches.
This week, Ohio State welcomes teams from around the state for the 2004 All-Ohio Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The event is slated to begin at 3 p.m. Friday and continue at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The No. 8 men’s lacrosse team extended its winning streak toseven and moved its GWLL record to 2-0 with a 12-5 victory overButler last Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The squad wasled by Kyle Olson, who had a game-high four goals, while ShaunLyons, Tom Randisi and Jason Bloom each chipped in three points.The squad travels to Geneva, N.Y., this weekend to face Hobart at 1p.m. Saturday before returning home to close out the home portionof its regular-season schedule April 23 vs. Air Force and April 25vs. Denver. Women’s lacrosse (4-7 overall, 1-2 American LacrosseConference) lost 14-6 at home last week to third-ranked Notre Dame.Ashley Evans scored a team-high three goals for the Buckeyes. OSUtravels this weekend to face Vanderbilt Sunday at 1 p.m. The No. 19men’s tennis team (15-3 overall, 5-1 Big Ten) split two conferencematches last weekend. The Buckeyes shut out Purdue, 7-0, and fellto No. 1-ranked Illinois, 4-3. With the win, Illinois was able totake the lead over Ohio State in the Big Ten race. Next up, thesquad returns to Columbus for their final home matches this season.Ohio State plays host to Indiana State and Youngstown State at noonand 6 p.m. Wednesday. The Buckeyes are back in action as they faceconference foes Northwestern at 4 p.m. Friday and Wisconsin at noonSunday. The women’s tennis team split two home matches lastweekend, beating Purdue, 5-2, before being clipped by No. 17Illinois, 4-3. Ohio State hits the road for Big Ten matches atWisconsin and Northwestern next weekend. The Buckeyes will face theBadgers at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 17 in Madison, Wis., and willtake on the Wildcats at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 18 in Evanston, Ill.Baseball split a four-game Big Ten series at Purdue this pastweekend. The Buckeyes won the opening game of the series 3-2 asJosh Newman came one out short of his second straight completegame. He struck out 10 batters against only one walk. Purdue wonthe first game of the Saturday doubleheader 5-4, before theBuckeyes regrouped to take a 2-1 lead in the series with a 9-5victory. Purdue spoiled the return of 2003 Big Ten Pitcher of theYear Scott Lewis Sunday to save a series split with a 5-4 victory.Lewis struck out six without a walk before departing after fiveinnings with a 3-1 lead. Brett Garrard leads the team with a .364batting average. The junior shortstop has nine doubles and aslugging percentage of .519 and an on-base percentage of .443.Jedidiah Stephen is batting .351, second on the team. He, alongwith Steve Caravati, paced the team with three home runs. Stephenleads the team with 17 RBI. The Buckeyes are hitting .283 as ateam. Ohio State will play host to Dayton Wednesday night at 6:35p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium before traveling to East Lansing, Mich.for a four-game series against Michigan State. The teams will playa single game Friday at 3:05 p.m. and a doubleheader Saturday at1:05 p.m. before the series finale Sunday at 1:05 p.m. The No. 1rowing first varsity eight defeated No. 6 Virginia and No. 20 Dukeat the ACC/Big Ten Double Duals to continue its undefeated streaklast Saturday in Charlottesville, Va. Overall, Ohio State’s varsitysquad finished the day 6-2 and the novice team went 2-2. The firstvarsity eight edged Virginia by 4.9 seconds, finishing the race in6:33.6. In the afternoon, the first boat finished with a time of6:38, compared to Duke’s time of 6:52.3. For their victories, thefirst varsity eight received its third consecutive Big Ten Boat ofthe Week honor. The second varsity eight and the first varsity fourboth fell to Virginia in the morning and defeated Duke in theafternoon. OSU’s second varsity four swept UVA in both the morningand afternoon. Ohio State returns to action this weekend as itfaces No. 14 Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota Saturday on Lake Lemonin Bloomington, Ind. Diver Mitch Richeson earned a spot at the U.S.Olympic team trials in diving April 9 at the 2004 Speedo AmericanCup in Minneapolis, Minn., finishing fifth overall in the 3-meterdive and placing first in the qualifying round in the first days ofthe event. Points earned in each round accumulated throughout themeet, with Richeson’s third-place finishes in the preliminary andsemi-final rounds allowing him a fifth-place finish overall with ascore of 945.21. Richeson earned the necessary points to qualifyfor the U.S. Olympic team trials in diving and now has theopportunity to compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.Postseason action continues, June 7-13, as Richeson travels to St.Peters, Mo. for the U.S. Olympic team trials in diving. The women’sbasketball team held its annual banquet Tuesday at the Buckeye Hallof Fame Cafe. The senior class of Emily Haynam, Tanya McClure andLaToya Turner were honored with the Phyllis Bailey Award, which isgiven yearly to the Buckeye basketball player(s) that bestdemonstrate athletics achievement, academic responsibility, effort,enthusiasm and loyalty to the program. Tommy Rowlands, who cappedthe most decorated career in Ohio State Wrestling with his secondNCAA heavyweight title in March, continued his push toward the 2004Olympic games in Athens, Greece with a fourth-place finish in the264.5-pound freestyle division last weekend at the United StatesOpen Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. With his fourth-placestanding, Rowlands earned an invitation to the 2004 United StatesOlympic Trials May 21-23 in Indianapolis. Rowlands will be joinedat the trials by current and former Buckeyes in 2004 All-Americanfreshman J.D. Bergman, who took eighth at his weight class in Grecostyle, and 2002 All-American Nick Preston (1998-2002) after eachclaimed qualifying finishes for the Olympic trials.
