No. 4-Seed Women’s Ice Hockey Falls to No. 2-Seed Wisconsin, 5-4, in Overtime – Ohio State Buckeyes

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 4-seed Ohio State women’s ice hockey team fell 5-4 to No. 2-seed Wisconsin in the consolation game of the 2004 WCHA Final Five at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. The Buckeyes finished fourth in the league and in the tournament.
OSU ends its season 16-16-3 overall and 10-12-2 in the WCHA, while UW improved to 25-6-3 overall and 18-5-1 in the WCHA. The game marked the final game for Ohio State of the 2003-04 season. Wisconsin is awaiting a bid to the NCAA tournament.
Wisconsin jumped out early taking a 3-0 lead in the first period. Badger forward Lindsay Macy scored a 2-on-1 goal assisted by Sara Bauer at 3:36. UW’s second goal came as Meghan Hunter scored an unassisted goal at 10:36. Macy tallied the Badgers’ third goal at 11:51. Ohio State had one power-play opportunity, but was unable to capitalize. UW outshot OSU 8-3 in the first stanza.
Ohio State made a come back, scoring three goals in the second period. Buckeye senior forward Heather Farrell (Perth, Ontario) scored OSU’s first goal of the game on a shot from the blue line at 3:53. Senior Emma Laaksonen (Espoo, Finland) and junior Jeni Creary (Shell Lake, Saskatchewan) assisted on the goal. Laaksonen recorded her 98th career point and Creary broke the OSU career record as she tallied her 99th career point. OSU pulled within one goal as Creary recorded her 100th career point on a goal, as she put in a loose puck in front of the net at 5:56. OSU’s Jeanne Chapple (Sr., Vadnais Heights, Minn.) and UW’s Macy received matching minors for roughing at 10:15, causing a 4-on-4 match-up. Ohio State tied the game at 3-all in the final second of 4-on-4 as the Buckeyes’ leading scorer Jana Harrigan (So., Burlington, Ontario) tipped in a pass from freshman Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario) at 12:14. OSU and UW each tallied 12 shots in the period. Both teams kept up their momentum, with each tallying one goal in the third period. The Badgers took the lead as Bauer scored a goal of her own at 6:38. Ohio State went on a 5-on-3 advantage at 9:31 and OSU head coach Jackie Barto immediately called a timeout to regroup her team. The Buckeyes took advantage of the chance as Bonhomme tied the game at 4-all on the power play at 9:40. OSU’s Laaksonen recorded her 16th assist on the year and her 99th career point on Bonhomme’s goal. The Buckeyes outshot the Badgers 11-7 in the third period. The third period ended tied at 4-all, forcing the game into a five-minute overtime period.
Wisconsin scored on its second shot on goal early in the overtime period. UW’s Karen Rickard clinched the victory for the Badgers at 2:19. UW tallied two shots on goal, while OSU had one blocked shot.
OSU goalie Melissa Glaser (Jr., Rockford, Ill.) played 62:19 minutes in goal, recording 24 saves on 29 Badger shots. Wisconsin’s Meghan Horras stopped 22-of-26 Buckeye chances.
Wisconsin outshot Ohio State 29-26. The Buckeyes held the Badgers scoreless on all three power-play chances. OSU was 1-for-6 on the power play.
Postgame Notes
– The meeting today marked the second consecutive season Ohio State and Wisconsin have faced off in the third place game of the WCHA Final Five. Last year, the Badgers defeated the Buckeyes, 4-1, in Grand Forks, N.D.
– Junior Jeni Creary recorded a goal and an assist against Wisconsin, marking her 99th and 100th career points. Creary broke the previous Ohio State career points record of 98 career points set by Shana Frost.
– Senior Emma Laaksonen recorded her 98th and 99th career points as she posted two assists against Wisconsin.
– With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 7-8-0 all-time in the playoffs.
– The contest marked only the third overtime in the five-year history of WCHA Final Five. The game marked the second time OSU has played in an overtime playoff game, the first was March 6, 2003 as Ohio State defeated Bemidji State, 4-3, in 79:11 minutes of action.
