No. 4-Seed Ohio State Tops No. 5 Minnesota State, 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 4-seed Ohio State women’s ice hockey team defeated No. 5 Minnesota State, 3-1, Friday in the first round of the 2004 WCHA Final Five at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. OSU improved to 16-14-3 overall (10-12-2 WCHA), while MSU ends its season 16-14-4 overall (9-11-4 WCHA).
The Buckeyes advance to the semifinals where they will face No. 1-seed Minnesota at 5:05 p.m. EST Saturday in Minneapolis, Minn.
Ohio State had a power-play opportunity early in the first period, as MSU’s Kearstin Solberg received a penalty for roughing at 1:29. The Buckeyes were unable to score on the extra-man advantage. OSU junior captain Meaghan Mulvaney (Sylvania, Ohio) got the Buckeyes on the boards as she scored the first goal nine minutes into the game. Sophomore Jana Harrigan posted her 14th assist of the season on the goal and freshman Lacey Schultz (Kelvington, Saskatchewan) recorded her fourth. Minnesota State took advantage of an Ohio State penalty at 11:32, as MSU’s Melanie Salatino scored a power-play goal to tie the game at 12:17. OSU went up 2-1 as Buckeye sophomore Jeni Creary (Shell Lake, Saskatchewan) notched her seventh goal of the season assisted by Krysta Skarda (Fr., Lake Elmo, Minn.) at 16:31. Ohio State outshot Minnesota State 17-7 in the first period.
There was no scoring in the second period, as Ohio State maintained its one-goal lead. The Buckeyes had two power-play chances, but could not get the puck past MSU’s Shari Vogt. OSU tallied six shots to MSU’s seven in the stanza.
The Buckeyes held onto their 2-1 lead throughout the period and secured the victory with goal in the final second of game. MSU pulled its goalie with 1:12 left in the game and called a timeout, but the Mavericks could not score on the extra-man advantage. The Buckeyes’ Harrigan scored an empty net goal with one second remaining in the game. OSU posted nine shots to MSU’s six in the stanza.
OSU goalie Melissa Glaser (Jr., Rockford, Ill.) played all 60 minutes in net, recording 19 saves on 29 Maverick shots. MSU’s Vogt played 58:48, stopping 29-of-32 Buckeye chances.
The Buckeyes outshot the Mavericks 32-20. OSU held MSU on 4-of-5 power-play chances. OSU was 0-for-4 on the power play.

Harrigan now has three goals and four assists in four consecutive games. – Ohio State won its fifth consecutive first round game in the WCHA Final Five. The Buckeyes have won every first-round game in the playoffs. – The Buckeyes improved their record to 7-6-0 all-time in the playoffs. – The game marked the first meeting between the Buckeyes and Mavericks in postseason action.
