Columbus, Ohio – Heather Miller and Erica Nollen, both seniors on the No. 13th-ranked Ohio State women’s soccer team (14-3-3), were named Academic All-America for District IV Thursday as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The honor is the second in the last two seasons for Nollen, who was named 2004 District IV Second Team. Miller, whose sister, Jen, won first team status in District IV in 2002, was named to the third team.
Nollen, who carries a 3.81 grade point average in mechanical engineering, has started 83 consecutive matches in the Buckeye backline and, as a two-time co-captain, has helped Ohio State set all-time defensive standards in each of the last two seasons. In 2004, the Buckeyes boast a 0.72 goals against average, which narrowly beats the 0.77 GAA established by the 2003 OSU squad. Nollen also has led Ohio State to nine shutout matches in each of the last two seasons. Offensively, she has contributed two goals in 2004.
H. Miller, who owns a 3.99 GPA in accounting, has once again served as a leader in the midfield for Ohio State. She has scored four goals on the year, including an OSU record-tying three-score game vs. Xavier Sept. 2. Miller has played in 85 matches in her career and ranks in the Ohio State Top 15 with nine career goals and 24 career points.
As a program, Ohio State has earned academic team awards from the National Soccer Coaches Association in each of the last four years.
The Buckeyes continue play Friday as hosts of the 2004 Big Ten Tournament at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Ohio State, the No. 2 seed, lines up against third-seed Michigan at 7 p.m. Friday in the second semifinal match. No. 1 Penn State and No. 4 Illinois play in the first semifinal at 4:30 p.m.
