Columbus, Ohio – The No.13th-ranked Ohio State women’s soccer team (14-3-3) advanced through the quarterfinal round of the 2004 Big Ten Women’s Soccer Tournament with a 2-0 blanking of No. 7-seed Purdue (10-10) Thursday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Lara Dickenmann accounted for a pair of early goals, lifting the No. 2-seed Buckeyes to their 14th win of the season and a spot in the semifinals Friday night.
The Buckeyes wasted little time gaining an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute on Dickenmann’s ninth goal of the season. Dickenmann, named 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, benefited from a combination of passes in the Boilermaker zone from Lisa Grubb (Jr., Portage, Mich.) and Colleen Hoban (Jr., Strongsville, Ohio). Grubb, a second-team all-league honoree, started the scoring play, finding Hoban inside the right half of the 18-yard box. Hoban advanced the ball to Dickenmann, who buried a shot from eight yards out.
After a pair of shots by Danielle Dietrich (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Liz Mumley (Sr., Woodbridge, Va.) that glanced off the Purdue post, Hoban connected with Dickenman again at the 20th minute for a 2-0 OSU lead. Dickenmann accepted another feed from Hoban and sent a groundball past Purdue keeper Maureen Cary for her second tally of the match and 10th goal of the season. “We played a great game this evening,” Lori Walker, Ohio State head coach who won her 100th match Thursday, said. “It was nice to go out and set the tone for the game in the first half. In the second half, we were able to play a lot of girls and give our players some rest so they can be ready tomorrow.”
Despite a scoreless second half, Ohio State controlled the action from kick off, boasting a 26-10 advantage in shots at the end of the match after a 16-5 margin in the first half. For the match, 11 Buckeyes recorded shots, led by four strikes from Dickenmann, Grubb and Emily Gilbert (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio). Hoban was credited with her sixth and seventh assists. Grubb’s assist also was her seventh of the season.
Emily Haynam scored the win for Ohio State, her 11th of the season. She was credited for her fifth shutout as Ohio State notched its ninth blanking of the season, which ties the program record set last season.
With the victory, Ohio State moved to the semifinals Friday night vs. the winner of No. 3 Michigan and No. 6 Wisconsin. In earlier action Thursday, No. 1 Penn State defeated No. 8 Indiana in the opener, 2-0. In the second match of the day, Illinois blanked Northwestern by a 5-0. The Nittany Lions and Illini face off in the first semifinal Friday at 4:30 p.m.
