Junior women’s soccer forward Lisa Grubb netted thegame-winning goal to lead the Buckeyes to a 1-0 win over Tennesseein the third round of the NCAA tournament Sunday. With the goal,Grubb became the all-time leader at Ohio State with 31 careerscoring strikes. The native of Portage, Mich. has 12 goals on theseason to go along with 10 assists for 34 points. All three figuresserve as career highs. For the season, Grubb has six match-winningscores as she leads the Buckeyes into the national semifinals vs.UCLA at noon Saturday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. BrothersMike and Kevin Nugent helped lead their teams to importantvictories last weekend. Mike, a senior placekicker on the footballteam, booted three field goals and four extra points in helping tolead Ohio State to a 37-21 win over No. 7-ranked Michigan Saturdayin Ohio Stadium. The field goals give Nugent 69 for his career andhe leads the Buckeyes in scoring this season with 87 points.Tuesday, Nugent was named a finalist for the prestigious Lou GrozaAward. Kevin Nugent, a junior forward on the men’s soccer team,scored the gamewinning goal in the 28th minute to lead the Buckeyesto a 1-0 win over No. 11 Memphis in the first round of the NCAAtournament Friday in Columbus. The win was Ohio State’s first NCAAtournament victory in program history and sent the buckeyes to asecond-round matchup at Notre Dame Tuesday. The goal was Nugent’sfifth of the season and was his second gamewinner. Nugent had acareer-high four shots on goal in the game against the Tigers.

Lisa Grubb netted the game-winning goal to send the women’ssoccer team (19-3-3) to the national quarterfinals Sunday with 1-0victory over Tennessee in the NCAA tournament at Jesse OwensMemorial Stadium. The Buckeyes and Lady Volunteers played evenlythrough a scoreless first 80 minutes before Grubb knifed throughtwo UT defenders at the top of the 18-yard box and buried her 12thgoal of the season. The score served as Grubb’s 31st career goal,which put her at the top of the career list at Ohio State.
The blanking of Tennessee, the 11th seed in the tournament, is the fourth straight shutout posted by Ohio State and its 13th this season as the team extended its program-best win streak to nine matches. Ohio State is 19-1-3 since starting the season 0-2 and boasts an unbeaten 15-0-1 mark at home this season.
With the win, the Buckeyes earned a spot in the national quarterfinals and welcome UCLA to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at noon Saturday. College Sports Television will broadcast the match live Saturday. Ohio State student radio also will air the match at www.underground.fm/sports.
Coming off its first NCAA tournament win in school history, themen’s soccer team travels to ninth-ranked and fifth-seeded NotreDame Tuesday for a second-round match. The Buckeyes (11-6-2) andFighting Irish (13-2-3) will meet at 7 p.m. at Alumni Field, withthe winner advancing to the third round Nov. 28 or 29 againsteither Duke or Old Dominion.
Ohio State shut out No. 11 Memphis, 1-0, Friday night in Columbus in a first-round game, while Notre Dame earned a first-round bye. The Irish have not played a game since Nov. 6 when they were knocked out of the BIG EAST tournament in the quarterfinals by Seton Hall on penalty kicks.
The Buckeyes are making their third appearance in the NCAA tournament in the last five years, while Notre Dame has been to the postseason each of the last four seasons and has enjoyed a first-round bye for the last two seasons.
The No. 9/10 women’s basketball team (3-1; 0-0 Big Ten) playshost to the 2004 Wonder/Hostess Buckeye Classic Saturday and Sundayin St. John Arena. In game one, Bradley (1-0; 0-0 Missouri Valley)and Detroit (0-1; 0-0 Horizon League) tip off at 1 p.m. Saturday inSt. John Arena. The Buckeyes face Yale (0-2; 0-0 Ivy League) at 3p.m. Saturday. The consolation game will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday andthe championship contest is slated to start at 3 p.m. All BuckeyeClassic games will be held in St. John Arena.
Ohio State’s Jessica Davenport and Caity Matter were named to the Sportsview.tv 2004 Preseason WNIT All-Tournament Team. For the tournament, Davenport averaged 17.8 points, 6.3 boards and 2.5 rebounds per game, while shooting .581 from the field (25-of-43) and making all 21 free throws she attempted. Matter averaged 14.3 points, 3.8 assists and shot .467 (21-of-45) from the field and 7-for-7 from the charity stripe in the four games.
The men’s basketball team opened the year 3-0 with two wins inthe Guardians Classic and a victory over Delaware Friday. The teamfaces Houston the Guardians Classic Tuesday and will then faceeither Missouri or Creighton Wednesday in St. Louis, Mo. The teamreturns home to face UT-Chattanooga in St. John Arena Saturday. Themen’s swimming and diving team won their meet against Denison,150-96, Friday night. The team won every event of the meet. SeniorTommy Seay remained undefeated in the 100-yard freestyle, winningthe event for the fifth time this season. Sophomores Nick Keene andGary Grant each won two individual events, with Keene winning the500- and 1,000-yard freestyle races and Grant winning the 100-yardbutterfly and the 50-yard freestyle. The Buckeye next travel toOxford, Ohio for the Miami Invite Dec. 2-4 and the United StatesOpen in San Antonio, Texas Dec. 3-5. The women’s swimming anddiving team defeated Denison 169-93 Friday night. Nicole Maglichwon the 200- and 1,000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke.Griet Buelens also won three events during the meet, winning the200-yard butterfly and the 100- and 500-yard freestyle events. TheBuckeyes also had two double-event winners in Gulsah Gunenc andRebekah Rychvalsky. Gunenc won the 100-yard butterfly and the200-yard individual medley, while Rychvalsky won the 100- and200-yard breaststroke events. The Buckeyes return to action with aroad trip to Oxford, Ohio for the Miami Invite Dec. 3-5. Thewomen’s ice hockey team travels to Duluth, Minn., for a two-gameroad series vs. the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs at 8:05 p.m. ESTFriday and Saturday at the DECC. The Buckeyes enter the series thisweekend on a four-game unbeaten streak, marking the longest of theseason. Ohio State tied and defeated Northeastern Nov. 13-14 andswept Bemidji State Nov. 19 and 21.
Jana Harrigan received her second consecutive WCHA Offensive Player of the Week honor this season for leading the Buckeyes with six points in their sweep over Bemidji State Nov. 19 and 21. Harrigan had a hand in six of the eight Buckeye goals in the two-game home series. She scored a goal and added three assists in the 4-1 victory Nov. 19. Harrigan followed with her fifth multiple-point game of the season as she recorded a goal and assisted on the game-winning goal in the Buckeyes’ 4-2 win Nov. 1.
The No. 9/11 men’s hockey team enters its week off in firstplace in the CCHA with a 7-2-1 league record and a 9-4-1 overallledger. The squad is coming off a loss (4-0) and tie (4-4 OT) onthe road at Nebraska-Omaha. Saturday, the Buckeyes trailed by twolate in the second period by sophomore Andrew Schembri scored onthe power play to cut UNO’s lead to one and freshman Jason DeSantistallied an unassisted shorthanded goal in the third period to tiethe game at four. The tie was OSU’s first since March 7-8, 2003, astretch of 62 games. The squad resumes play with a two-game seriesagainst CCHA rival Alaska Fairbanks next weekend in Value CityArena. The Buckeyes and Nanooks will meet at 7:05 p.m. Friday andSaturday, Dec. 3-4. Seventh-ranked women’s volleyball fell out offirst place in the Big Ten with a 3-1 loss to Penn State lastWednesday. The Buckeyes responded with a 3-2 victory over IllinoisFriday. OSU’s Stacey Gordon had 21 kills and 22 digs against theNittany Lions with Danielle Meyer adding 14 kills and seven assistblocks. Ami Stevens added 15 kills and 17 digs. Against IllinoisGordon recorded 32 kills and 27 digs, adding six blocks. Stevenscontributed 14 kills and 10 digs in the match. Ohio State, now 25-3overall and 15-3 in the Big Ten close out the regular season withroad matches at Michigan (18-10, 9-9) Friday and at Michigan State(12-14, 7-11) Saturday. The following Sunday, the NCAA willannounce pairings for the first and second round of the NCAATournament. The wrestling team finished competition at the 2004Michigan State Open at Jenison Field House in East Lansing, Mich.Sunday. J.D. Bergman, the top seed at 197 pounds, claimed thetournament title, while T.J. Enright, Big Ten Wrestler of the Week,scored his second straight tournament crown at 133 en route beingnamed outstanding wrestler for the open. Overall, eight Buckeyesplaced, including six freshmen.
Bergman, who rolled through his three matches Saturday shutting out each of his opponents, scored an 8-3 decision in the semifinals to earn a bid to the title match, where he edged Wynn Michalak of Central Michigan, 3-1. The win, gave Bergman his first MSU Open championship after placing second in the event last season. Enright claimed his second straight tournament title Sunday. The winner last week at the Oklahoma Gold Classic recorded falls in each of his matches Saturday before he knocked off No. 1 seed Sam Hiatt of Northern Illinois in the semis, 3-1. In the final, Enright posted his fourth fall of the tournament, pinning Kyle Stoffer of Central Michigan 4:27 into the match.
Keegan Mueller, a true freshman, made his first appearance as a Buckeye and took fourth place at 157 pounds. Fellow freshmen Jason Jonhstone and Andrew Lowther also made their OSU debuts. Johnstone placed eighth at 149, while Lowther gained a sixth-place standing at 174 after a tight 7-6 loss in his last match. Another freshman, J Jaggers, defaulted to sixth place because of injury. At 165, Zach Craiglow took fifth place.
The rifle (8-5) team defeated Morehead State, 4,535 to 4,294,Sunday in Converse Hall. The Buckeyes shot 2,275 in smallbore and2,260 in air rifle. Ohio State’s Ryan Kohatsu (Sr., Hilo, Hawaii)was the top shooter of the day with a 1,171 aggregate score. Heshot 589 in smallbore and 582 in air rifle, the top scores in eachevent. Second in the competition was Linnea Nygren (Jr., Hayward,Calif.) with a 1,133 aggregate. She had a 567 in air rifle forsecond play and a 570 in smallbore for third. Six members of thesynchronized swimming team have been named to United StatesNational Teams I and II this weekend following the U.S. NationalTeam Trials in Walnut Creek, Calif.
Sophomore Becky Kim (So., Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) was the only Buckeye named to U.S. National Team I. Members of the squad, which is regarded as the highest in the nation, are thought to be possible future Olympic team selections. The U.S. National Team I will compete July 17-31 at the FINA World Championships in Montreal, Quebec.
Additionally, five Buckeyes were named to U.S. National Team II, including seniors Heather Burdick (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) and Lindsay Newbill (Laguna Hills, Calif./Laguna Hills), sophomore Ellen Hacker (Newark, Ohio/Newark) and freshman sisters Lea Pinette (Bristol, Conn.) and Leayn Pinette (Bristol, Conn.). The U.S. National Team II also will compete this summer in events that will be announced at a later date.
Senior outfielder Steve Caravati was named a first-teampreseason All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball WritersAssociation, the group announced Nov. 18. Caravati was a third-teamAll-American at the conclusion of the 2004 season when he was theBig Ten Player of the Year. The senior from Dover, Ohio (Dover),led all conference batters in the 2004 with a .391 batting averageand finished second in conference games with a .407 battingaverage. One of three Buckeyes to start all 61 games, Caravati seta school record with 92 hits, while hitting 17 doubles, nine homeruns and batted in 52 RBI. A member of the ABCA All-MidwestRegional team, the leftfielder had a .587 slugging percentage and a.447 on-base percentage. He scored 46 runs and was 8-for-10 instolen bases. Earlier in the fall, head baseball coach Bob Toddannounced that Caravati and Mike Rabin would serve as co-captainsfor the 2005 season. The cheerleaders will travel to Walt DisneyWorld, Jan. 14-17, to compete for the 2005 College CheerleadingNational Championship. Ohio State recently won the Northeast Regioncompetition to qualify for the national competition for the 16thtime in the last 18 years. By winning their region, the Buckeyesreceived an automatic bid to the national competition, as well asfree transportation and hotel accommodations. Ohio State finished15th in the nation at the competition last season after placingseventh in 2003 and sixth in 2002. The Buckeyes earned asecond-place finish in 2001 and placed sixth in 2000. Ohio Statewon the 1993 College Cheerleading National Championship. Fieldhockey sophomore Saskia Mueller was named to the 2004 STX/NFHCAAll-American Third Team Tuesday. With nine assists Mueller led theBuckeyes and was tied for fifth in the Big Ten regular season. TheZurich, Switzerland, native finished the season tied for third onthe team with 15 points. Mueller earned Big Ten Player of the Weekaccolades after recording one goal and one assist in OSU’s 4-2victory over Northwestern Oct. 16.
