Senior running back Maurice Hall became Ohio State’s all-timeleader in kickoff return yardage Saturday in the Buckeyes’ 21-10win over Penn State in Ohio Stadium. Hall has totaled 1,476 yardson 64 attempts, breaking the record held by Ken-Yon Rambo(1997-2000). Hall’s first kickoff return Saturday, which gave himthe school record, went for 62 yards and set up the Buckeyes’ finaltouchdown. He also finished the game with a team-high 65 yardsrushing, which also marked his personal season high. Women’svolleyball senior Stacey Gordon averaged 8.17 kills per game andhit .391 for the weekend to earn Big Ten Player of the Week honors.The 8.17 mark is her best two-match weekend set in the Big Ten withher previous best being 8.00 against Michigan State and Michigan(56 kills, 7 games). Gordon averaged 9.67 kills per game againstPurdue (29 kills, 3 games) and her solo block against Indiana movesher into a tie for 16th in OSU career solos with 33. Her threetotal blocks (1-2) gives her 209 (33-176) for her career and movesher to 18th on the OSU career blocks list. Gordon has double-figurekills in her last 98 matches.
Athletics Good Stuff
The Ohio State University serves as the host to the 10th annualBig Ten Women’s soccer tournament Thursday, Nov. 4 through Sunday,Nov. 7 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The 2004 version of theleague tournament comes to Columbus for the first time since 1996and features the No. 2-seeded and 14th-ranked Buckeyes (12-3-3,6-1-3), who completed an unbeaten 9-0-1 mark at home last week withnon-conference wins over Kent State (3-0, Wednesday) and Toledo(5-1, Saturday).
The Buckeyes welcome the Top 8 teams in the conference to play for an automatic NCAA tournament bid. The postseason event begins with quarterfinal matches at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, featuring top-seed Penn State, ranked No. 3 in the nation, vs. eighth-seeded Indiana. The Buckeyes take the field in a 4:30 p.m. match Thursday vs. No. 7-seed Purdue. Ohio State downed Purdue, 1-0, Sept. 24 at JOMS.

Since the initial tournament at Madison, Wis. in 1994, the postseason setting has served as an exciting climax to each Big Ten campaign, often highlighted by several upsets and thrilling tournament runs. In 2002, Ohio State entered the bracket as the No. 7 seed and knocked off two nationally-ranked opponents in sudden death penalty kicks to reach the finals where OSU handled Wisconsin, 2-1, to gain its first berth to the NCAA tournament.

The No. 14 men’s hockey (5-3, 5-1/1st CCHA) team split atwo-game series at Western Michigan last weekend. The Buckeyes lostthe opener, 6-3, but came back from goal down in the third periodto post a 5-2 win Saturday. In the victory, Matt Beaudoin tied thegame, while JB Bittner scored the gamewinner. Bittner led the teamwith four points, on two goals and two assists, on the weekend,while freshman Domenic Maiani had three assists.
The Buckeyes open a four-game homestand with two games against Sacred Heart this weekend. OSU and the Pioneers will meet at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Value City Arena.
The women’s ice hockey team split a two-game road series withNorth Dakota last weekend in Grand Forks, N.D. The Buckeyes fell5-4 in overtime Friday and came back to defeat the Fighting Sioux5-4 Saturday. The series marked the first meeting between theteams. With a 5-3-0 record, the Buckeyes hold their best start inprogram history. OSU’s previous best record eight games into theseason was 3-5-0 set in the 2000-01 and 2003-04 seasons. ElevenBuckeyes recorded points between the two games against UND, markingthe first time this season 11 players earned points in a series.Ohio State set four season highs vs. UND Saturday, recorded themost points (12), goals (5), assists (7) and shots (35).
Ohio State takes on 2004 defending national champion No. 1 Minnesota at 1:05 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. Both games this weekend will have live stats audio broadcast at www.gophersports.com. The game Sunday will be televised live by Fox Sports Net North.
The women’s swimming and diving team opened their season with awin over the Bowling Green Falcons 206.50 – 93.50 last Thursday.The Buckeyes placed first in every event, with many multiplewinners. Junior Nicole Maglich recorded two first place finishes inthe 100- and 1,000-yard freestyle events. She also recorded thefastest split time in the 200-yard freestyle relay. SophomoreRebekah Rychvalsky won both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke,while freshmen Linda Lund won took the 50- and 100-yard butterflyand Griet Buelens took the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events.Other winners for the night were senior Katie Kolles in the100-yard backstroke, sophomore Stephanie Fennell won the 200-yardbackstroke and freshman Samantha Johnson placed first in the400-yard individual medley. Olympian Gulsah Gunenc won the 200-yardbutterfly in a race that came down to the touch. The diving teamswept both the 1-meter and 3-meter events, with Ashley Bourlandtaking the 1-meter and Anesa Beard taking the 3-meter event.
Saturday, the women’s team will join the men’s swimming and diving team for their first coed meet of the season against the Cincinnati Bearcats at 5 p.m. in the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center. On Friday, the men’s team will have its season opener as they travel to Miami (Ohio) at 4 p.m.
Seventh-ranked women’s volleyball (21-1 overall, 11-1 Big Ten)defeated Indiana and Purdue in 3-0 sweeps last weekend. StaceyGordon had a match-high 29 kills (.415) with Danielle Meyer and AmiStevens adding 13 kills each against the Boilermakers. Gordon had20 kills and Meyer 11 in Sunday’s win over Purdue. With Minnesota’sloss at Wisconsin Saturday, the Buckeyes are in first place in theBig Ten with Minnesota (10-2) and Penn State (10-2) tied forsecond. Ohio State travels this week to play at Iowa Friday andMinnesota Saturday. The eighth-ranked women’s golf team tied forthird place at The Landfall Tradition Sunday with a score of 883.The Buckeyes posted a season-best round of 285 (-3) in the finalround. Ohio State senior Lindsay Knowlton set a career-low with around of 67 (-5) on the final day. Knowlton, whose previous lowround was 69, tied for third on the individual leaderboard with ascore of 214 (-2). Teammate Kristen White tied for 16th place witha score of 220 and Dana Je finished in a tie for 19th place with ascore of 222. The Landfall Tradition concluded fall play for OhioState. The men’s golf team finished in sixth with a score of 869 atthe 2004 Landfall Tradition this past Sunday. The event was held atthe par 72 Jack Nicklaus Course in Wilmington, N.C., and hosted byNorth Carolina Wilmington. Ohio State sophomore Colin Biles(Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) led the men’s team with a tie forfourth place individually, shooting a three-round total of 210(-6). Scott Anderson (Great Falls, Mont./Great Falls) tied forseventh-place with a score of 211 (-7). The men’s cross countryteam placed sixth while the women’s team finished 11th Sunday atthe 2004 Big Ten Championships. The event was held on the AshtonCross Country Course on the campus of Iowa University in Iowa City,Iowa. The men finished the meet with 127 points. Junior BrianOlinger (Fresno, Ohio/Ridgewood), paced Buckeyes with aseventh-place finish with a time of 24:21. Olinger was selected asa first team All-Big Ten honoree. Teammate John Ealy (Fr.,Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) recorded a 15th-place finish witha time of 24:40. The women completed the meet with 276 points.Sophomore Melanie Price (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Turpin)finished in 42nd place with a time of 22:31. The field hockey team(9-9 overall; 1-5 Big Ten) fell 3-1 to Indiana Friday and defeatedSt. Louis 5-1 Saturday in Bloomington, Ind. Sophomore Lauren Kruserecorded back-to-back goals to lead the squad in its victory overSt. Louis. Up next, Ohio State heads to the 2004 Big Ten TournamentFriday through Sunday at Leonard B. The men’s soccer team improved to 9-5-2overall and 4-1-0 in the Big Ten with a pair of wins last weekendon the road, topping No. 25 Northwestern, 2-1, in overtime andValparaiso, 2-0. With the win at Northwestern, the Buckeyesclinched the No. 2 seed in the Big Ten tournament Nov. 11-14 atMichigan, where Ohio State will also conclude the regular seasonthis Saturday at 2 p.m. In conference games, the Buckeyes are thetop ranked scoring team in the Big Ten (1.60 goals scored per game)and own the stingiest defense (0.40 goals allowed per game). Junior Buckeyes Scott Green and Ross Wilson,both members of the men’s tennis team, compete in fall tournamentaction this weekend at the ITA National Indoor Championship at theVarsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. The pair automaticallyqualified for the tournament after claiming the ITA All-Americandoubles title Oct. 10 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Green and Wilson areundefeated in tournament action this season with a 5-0 mark.Buckeyes Drew Eberly and Wilson advanced to the doubles title matchOct. 26 at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship. The OSU tandemsuffered an 8-5 loss to the No. 1 seed Illinois’ Ryler DeHeart andG.D. Jones. Eberly and Wilson, 5-1 in tournament play, advanced tothe final round after they defeated teammates Joey Atas and ChrisKlingemann, 8-1, in semifinal action.
