Men’s tennis sophomore Joey Atas claimed the 2004 Big TenSingles title Monday in Madison, Wis. Atas, the No. 2 seed of the64-player tournament, defeated Penn State’s Mark Barry, 6-2, 1-6,6-3, in the championship match. Atas is the second Buckeye tocapture the title under sixth-year head coach Ty Tucker. Vince Ng,former Buckeye and OSU career singles leader, won the 2002 Big TenSingles title. Women’s hockey junior forward Jana Harrigan led theBuckeyes with four goals in their 1-0-1 home series againstNortheastern Nov. 13-14. The Burlington, Ontario, native scoredfour of the Buckeyes’ seven goals on the weekend to earn theWestern Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week.In the 1-1 overtime tie last Saturday, Harrigan scored Ohio State’slone goal. Harrigan followed Sunday with her first career hattrick, including the game-winning goal in OSU’s 6-5 overtimevictory. This season, Harrigan leads the squad with 16 points andnine assists. Harrigan, who entered the weekend with three goals in10 games, more than doubled her season output in just two gamesagainst Northeastern.
Athletics Good Stuff
The men’s soccer team will host Memphis at 7 p.m. Friday in thefirst round of the NCAA tournament as the Buckeyes (10-6-2)received an at-large Monday to the 48-team championship field. OhioState, co-champions of the Big Ten regular season title, will bemaking its third trip to the NCAA tournament in the last fiveyears. Last Thursday at the conference banquet, head coach JohnBluem was named the 2004 Big Ten Coach of the Year, while seniorcaptain Justin Cook was named the 2004 Player of the Year. Alsoearning first team honors was junior defender Kyle Veris, whilejunior goalkeeper Ray Burse Jr. and sophomore midfielder TaylorKorpieski were second team selections.
Cook is the first player in Big Ten history to be named the league’s Freshman of the Year (he received that honor in 2000) and later the Player of the Year. He leads the Buckeyes with 27 points, while Burse owns a 0.78 goals against average. The winner of the Ohio State-Memphis match up will advance to play No. 5 seed Notre Dame next Tuesday in Notre Dame, Ind.
The women’s soccer team (18-3-3) won its first and second roundmatches in the 2004 NCAA Tournament at home this weekend and earnedthe right to host its third-round match vs. Tennessee this Sundayat 1 p.m. The No. 6-seed Buckeyes used a pair of second-half goalsby Danielle Dietrich and Lara Dickenmann to score a 2-0,first-round shutout of Bowling Green Friday night at Jesse OwensMemorial Stadium before blanking Detroit, 3-0, in the second roundSunday behind goals from Keiana Mitchell, Kathy Fulk and MelissaMiller.
The Buckeyes will make their first appearance in the NCAA Round of 16 vs. the Volunteers.
With the pair of shutouts this weekend, Ohio State extended its program-best win streak to eight matches and moved to 14-0-1 at home in 2004. Ohio State has won its last three matches via shutout.
The men’s cross country team will travel to Terre Haute, Ind.,Nov. 22 to compete in the NCAA championships for the fourth time infive years.
The Buckeyes received an at-large bid to the event following a sixth place finish at the 2004 Great Lakes Regional Championships in Ypsilanti, Mich. Leading the way for the Buckeyes during the event was junior Brian Olinger, who paced the Buckeyes and finished fourth overall.
Indiana State University will host the 2004 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships, Nov. 22, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind. The women’s race will begin at 11 a.m., EST time followed by the men’s race at 12:15 p.m.
8th-ranked women’s volleyball defeated Northwestern, 3-1, andWisconsin, 3-0, to remain in a first place tie with fourth-rankedPenn State who Ohio State will host Wednesday night in St. JohnArena at 7p.m. OSU will also host No. 25 Illinois Friday at 7 p.m.Stacey Gordon had 30 kills and a career-high 27 digs againstNorthwestern. Marisa Main had a career-high 67 assists while AmiStevens had a career-high 17 kills against the Wildcats.Additionally, Briana McCarthy had a career-high five ace serves andtied her career-high of four solo blocks in the match. Maya Mappproduced a season-high 15 kills in the match. In the Wisconsinmatch, Gordon had a match-high 19 kills in the win. Stevens added12 kills in the victory. Gordon was named the Big Ten Player of theWeek after her performance vs. the Wildcats and Badgers. The No.9/10 women’s basketball team (2-0; 0-0 Big Ten) plays host to No.24/24 Arizona (2-0; 0-0 PAC-10) in the semifinals of the 2004Sportsview.tv Preseason WNIT at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Value CityArena. Ohio State beat Bowling Green, 89-41, Friday and blew bySaint Joseph’s, 76-29, Sunday in rounds one and two of the event.Arizona defeated Saint Mary’s, 87-72, and Rice, 68-43, in the firsttwo games of the preseason WNIT. In both Buckeye contests, everyOSU player available to play clocked minutes. Jessica Davenport ledthe squad in scoring with 17 points vs. Bowling Green and 16 scorevs. Saint Joseph’s. Additionally, Caity Matter hit her 200th and201st 3-pointers with two makes from beyond the 3-point line vs.SJU Sunday afternoon in St. John Arena. She is only the thirdBuckeye in history to make over 200 career 3-pointers. The men’sbasketball team tipped off the 2004-05 season with a 74-53 win overTowson in the opening round of the Guardians Classic Monday (8p.m.) at Value City Arena. It marked the first game for theBuckeyes under the direction of first-year head coach Thad Matta.Ohio State will play Robert Morris at 8 p.m. Tuesday, while Towsonwill face Morgan State at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the second round ofthe regional. The Buckeyes won’t take much time off after Tuesday.Ohio State plays host to Delaware at 7 p.m. Friday at VCA. Thatgame will be televised by ESPN Plus locally (WBNS 10 TV-CBS). The No. 7/8 men’s hockey team sweptCCHA-foe Northern Michigan by 2-0 and 5-1 scores last weekend toextend their winning streak to five and remain in first place inthe league with a 7-1 mark. Junior goalie Dave Caruso made 24 savesSaturday to record his fifth career shutout, while Sunday, freshmanIan Keserich had a career-best 31 stops for his first win in leagueplay. Freshman Sam Campbell led the team with two goals in the 5-1win. Sophomore defenseman Sean Collins, who had a goal and anassist on the weekend and was +2, was named CCHA Defenseman of theWeek for the second time this season.
Ohio State continues CCHA play when it travels to face Nebraska-Omaha for two games this weekend. The teams will meet at 8:05 p.m. EST Friday and Saturday at Qwest Center Omaha in Omaha, Neb. The Buckeyes enter the series first in the nation with nine wins on the year.
The women’s ice hockey team recorded a victory and a tieagainst Northeastern in non-conference action last weekend at theOSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes and Huskies tied 1-1 in overtimeSaturday (Nov. 13). OSU came back to defeat NU 6-5 in overtimeSunday (Nov. 14). Junior forward Jana Harrigan led the Buckeyeswith four goals on the weekend. Harrigan recorded her first careerhat trick, including the game-winning in OSU’s overtime victorySunday. This season Harrigan leads the squad with 16 points, onseven goal and nine assists.
Ohio State is back in league action when it plays host to Bemidji State at 7:05 p.m. Friday and 12:05 p.m. Sunday at the OSU Ice Rink. The home series marks the first meeting between the two teams this season. Ohio State leads Bemidji State 12-7-3 in the all-time series. The Buckeyes hold a 7-2-1 record vs. the Beavers in Columbus.
The women’s swimming and diving team defeated Miami (Ohio)Saturday with a score of 148-95. Freshman Griet Buelens and juniorNicole Maglich won two events each for the Buckeyes. Other winnersincluded Linda Lund, Rebekah Rychvalsky and Gulsah Gunenc. In thediving well the Buckeyes swept the Top 3 spots in the 1-meter, withAmber Simmons placing first. In the 3-meter, the Buckeyes took theTop 4 spots, with Julie Broms winning the event. The men’s swimmingand diving team defeated both Louisville University and WestVirginia University, 178-63 and 164.5-78.5, respectively. Nate Kingwas the only double-event winner in both the 200-yard backstrokeand the 500-yard freestyle. Other winners for the night were TommySeay and Rob Kauscher. The Buckeye divers dominated in the meet,taking the Top 4 slots in both the 1-meter event and the 3-meterwith senior Mitch Richeson placing first in both events. The Big Ten Singles Championship is the final fall preseason tournament of 2004. The Ohio State squad had a stellar fall season bringing home two national doubles titles and the recent Big Ten Singles crown. Junior duo Scott Green (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Ross Wilson (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St. Francis DeSales) captured both the ITA All-American title (Oct. 10) and the ITA National Indoors title (Nov. 7). The OSU squad is back on the courts Jan. 21-23 at the Rice Invite in Houston, Texas.
The defending national champion fencing team sent severalcompetitors to a non-team scoring meet at Penn State Saturday andcame away with several individual honors. Junior Adam Crompton wonthe men’s saber competition, while junior Jason Rogers finishedthird and sophomore Jason Paul finished 12th in that weapon. Inmen’s foil, sophomore Boaz Ellis finished fourth, while men’s epeesenior Brian Gross placed 15th. On the women’s side, freshmanSiobhan Byrne placed second in saber, while in foil senior HannaThompson took first place, defeating the defending nationalchampion in the process, while senior Metta Thompson placed sixth.The wrestling team opened the season last week with at the OklahomaGold Classic in Brockport, N.Y. The Buckeyes placed sixth in theteam standings and were led by freshman T.J. Enright, who won the133-pound weight class. Fellow freshman Ryan Needle won fivestraight bouts in the 149-pound wrestlebacks to claim a third-placefinish after dropping his first match of the tournament. Five otherBuckeyes placed in the Top 8 as Ohio State amassed 64.5 teampoints. The host Sooners won the event with 212.5 points.
The Buckeyes continue the early tournament portion of the schedule at the Michigan State Open Saturday and Sunday in East Lansing, Mich. The tournament starts at 9 a.m.
