Ohio State Notes
With the loss Saturday, Ohio State dropped to 11-7 in roadgames under head coach Jim Tressel. After the loss Saturday, JimTressel’s career mark stands at 173-68-2, including a 38-11 recordat Ohio State. For the 100th consecutive game, Ohio State scored atleast one touchdown. The last time a Buckeye team was held withouta touchdown was a 13-9 loss to Michigan in the 1996 season. TheBuckeyes now own an all-time Big Ten record of 417-161-24. UnderTressel, Ohio State moved to 22-9 in Big Ten play.
Ohio State – Purdue Series
The meeting Saturday between Ohio State and Purdue was the 49thin the series. Despite the loss, the Buckeyes hold a 35-12-2advantage in the series, including a 11-6 edge in West Lafayette.Ohio State had won the last three games against the Boilermakers,including 10 of the last 11 games. The last Buckeye loss in theseries was a 31-27 setback in West Lafayette in 2000.
Ohio State Special Teams
Senior placekicker Mike Nugent converted on a 44-yard fieldgoal attempt to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead with 10:47 to play inthe first quarter. It was his 17th field goal on 20 attempts thisseason and was his ninth of the season from at least 40 yards (12attempts).
Nugent had five points against the Boilermakers, boosting his career point total to 328, which is good for third all-time at Ohio State. Nugent needs 21 points to surpass Pete Johnson (348 points, 1973-76) as the school’s all-time point leader and 15 to pass Dan Stultz (342, 1997-00) for second all-time. Ohio State Offensive Notes
Santonio Holmes caught a 7-yard pass from Troy Smith in thesecond quarter, giving him at least one catch in his last 16 games.His last game without a reception was against Iowa on Oct. 18,2003. Freshman Devon Lyons made the second catch of his career, thefirst for positive yardage. Smith hit Lyons for a 15-yard gain toset up the first touchdown of the game. Smith connected with Holmesfor a 30-yard touchdown pass on the next play. Lyons had one catchin the win over Michigan State for no gain. The 41-yard receptionby Roy Hall was his second longest of the season. He had a 50-yardcatch at Northwestern. Anthony Gonzalez caught a 38-yard pass fromTroy Smith. It was his longest catch of his career and set up theBuckeyes’ game-tying touchdown with 3:50 to play in the game. Hisprevious long was 11 yards against Indiana. Smith scored his firstcareer rushing touchdown when he tied the game with a 5-yard runwith 3:50 to play in the fourth quarter.
Ohio State Defense Notes
Bobby Carpenter had two tackles for loss against Purduetotaling 13 yards, including a sack of nine yards. He now has 6.5tackles for loss this season totaling 25 yards. He finished witheight tackles. The sack was Carpenter’s second of the season. MikeKudla had the other Buckeye sack, stopping Brandon Kirsch for a3-yard loss. It was his third sack of the season. Quinn Pitcockpicked off Kirsch in the fourth quarter and returned it 14 yards.It was his first career interception. Anthony Schlegel finished thegame with nine tackles and had 2.5 tackles for loss, totaling nineyards. He now has 10.5 tackles for loss this season, totaling 47yards.
Other Ohio State Notes
Anthony Gonzalez made his first career start at Ohio State whenthe Buckeyes went with four receivers on the first play fromscrimmage against Purdue. The Buckeyes first fielded a footballteam in 1890. With the loss Saturday, Ohio State has posted anall-time record of 763-298-53 in 114 years. A sell-out crowd of64,639 attended the game Saturday. For the season, the Buckeyeshave played before sellout crowds in all 10 games this season.Former Buckeye Shane Olivea (2000-03) served as the honorarycaptain for Ohio State Saturday.
