Ohio State Suffers 2-1 Loss to St. Cloud State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team suffered a 2-1 loss to the St. Cloud State Huskies Sunday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. The loss ends the Buckeyes’ nine-game unbeaten streak and five-game conference winning streak. Ohio State’s record dropped to 9-6-1 overall and 6-6-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Huskies earned their first conference win and improved to 4-13-1 overall and 1-10-1 in WCHA action.
After Ohio State beat St. Cloud State 2-1in game one of the series Saturday, the Huskies came out strong scoring the first goal of the game. SCSU sophomore Ashley Stewart scored an unassisted goal on a turnover from behind the net at 10:54. The Huskies tallied a second goal eight minutes later, as Roxanne Stang scored a power-play goal, assisted by Kelly Stewart and Ashley Stewart. The Huskies outshot the Buckeyes, 18-9, in the first period.
Ohio State stepped up its play in the second period, as it outshot the Huskies, 9-4. The Buckeyes could not score on their three power-play chances in the period.
The Buckeyes ended St. Cloud State’s goalie Lauri St. Jacques shutout bid by scoring their lone goal late in the third period. Buckeye freshman Katie Maroney (Fr., La Porte, Ind.) scored her second goal of the season at 17:11. The goal was assisted by Crystal Sayther (Fr., Burnsville, Minn.) and Amber Bowman (Fr., Innisfil, Ontario). Ohio State pulled its goalie with 48 seconds remaining, but could not get the equalizer. The Buckeyes outshot the Huskies16-3 in the third period.
OSU goaltender Melissa Glaser (Jr., Rockford, Ill.) ended the game with 23 saves on 25 St. Cloud State shots. St. Jacques stopped 33-of-34 Buckeye chances.
Ohio State’s nationally fourth-ranked penalty-killing unit allowed the Huskies one goal on four power-play chances. OSU was 0-for-6 on the power play in the game.
Next time out, Ohio State plays host to future College Hockey America league opponent Quinnipiac at 7:05 p.m. Jan. 10 at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio.
