Ohio State Defeats St. Cloud State, 2-1, in Columbus – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team defeated the St. Cloud State Huskies, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. The victory extends the Buckeyes’ unbeaten streak to nine games and continues their five-game conference winning streak. Ohio State improves its record to 9-5-1 overall and 6-5-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Huskies fall to 3-13-1 overall and 0-10-1 in WCHA action.
Ohio State and St. Cloud State return to the ice Sunday at 2:05 p.m. for game two of the two-game series at the OSU Ice Rink. Earlier this season, the Buckeyes swept the Huskies in St. Cloud, Minn.
Despite being outshot 14-8 in the first period by the Huskies, Ohio State held SCSU scoreless in the first 20 minutes of play. Ohio State’s fourth ranked penalty-killing unit prevailed once again, as Erin O’Grady (Sr., London, Ontario) and Melissa Glaser (Jr., Rockford, Ill.) headed to the penalty box giving St. Cloud State a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:50.
The Buckeyes stepped up their play in the second period, as they outshot the Huskies 17-9. Freshman Krysta Skarda (Fr., Lake Elmo, Minn.) scored the first goal of the game at 1:13. Skarda scored her third goal of the season on a pass from behind the goal line from junior captain Meaghan Mulvaney (Jr., Sylvania, Ohio) and junior Jeni Creary (Jr., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan). Eight minutes later, senior captain Emma Laaksonen (Sr., Espoo, Finland) shot the puck past SCSU goalie’s for a top-shelf goal in the right corner of the net. Sophomore Jana Harrigan (Burlington, Ontario) and freshman Katie Maroney (Fr., La Porte, Ind.) assisted on the goal. Ohio State kept up its momentum, but St. Cloud State was able to get on the board late in the third period. SCSU senior Kobi Kawamoto scored a shorthanded goal at 17:37. St. Cloud State pulled its goalie with 1:14 remaining, but was unable to capitalize with the extra-skater on the ice.
OSU goaltender Glaser ended the game with 37 saves on 38 St. Cloud State shots. Ellen Brinkman stopped 34-of-32 Buckeye chances.
The Buckeyes held the Huskies scoreless on all four power-play chances. OSU was 0-for-5 on the power play in the game.
