Men’s hockey senior goalie Mike Betz allowed just two goalslast weekend to lead the Buckeyes to a sweep of Lake SuperiorState. Friday, Betz stopped all 17 Laker shots to record his 11thcareer shutout, breaking Bill McKenzie’s mark of 10, set from1970-72. Betz now owns the program records for career wins (68),career shutouts (11), season goals-against average (2.24 in 2003)and season shutouts (5). Amarachi Ukabam (So., Creve Couer, Mo./Marquette) was named Big Ten Track and Field Athlete of the WeekTuesday after she automatically qualified for the 2004 NCAA IndoorChampionships with her effort in the weight throw and the top markin the shot put at the Kentucky Invitational this past weekend.Ukabam, the reigning conference freshman of the year, recorded anNCAA Indoor championships automatic qualifier in the weight with aheave of 65-7.75. Her 51-4.25 first-place throw in the shot putalso served as a provisional qualifier. Ukabam, who also won theshot put at the season-opening Buckeye Invite Jan. 10, has wonthree of four throw competitions in the two meets this season.

The men’s basketball team appears on national televisiontonight against Indiana at Value City Arena. Tip time is 7 p.m.ESPN will televise the game with Dave Barnett, Tim McCormick andSteve Lavin calling the action. The Buckeyes are 9-7 overall and1-2 in Big Ten play after winning the Big Ten home opener Saturdayagainst Minnesota. Ohio State is 62-29 in Big Ten home openers inthe 91-year history of Big Ten men’s basketball at Ohio State. TheBuckeyes are in the midst of a seven-game stretch where theBuckeyes play five Big Ten battles in Columbus. Ohio State travelsto Iowa for an 8 p.m. game Saturday in Carver-Hawkeye Arena andthen Jan. 31 to Purdue. The No. 10 women’s ice hockey team put upan impressive performance in three games last week at the OSU IceRink. The Buckeyes defeated Quinnipiac, 6-1, in non-conferenceaction Jan. 13. Then, OSU improved its unbeaten streak to 18 gamesagainst conference rival Minnesota State. Ohio State upset theeighth ranked Mavericks, 3-0, Jan. 16 and tied MSU, 2-2, inovertime Jan. 17. Minnesota State was the second Top 10 team OhioState upset this season. The Buckeyes previously defeated then-No.6 Wisconsin, 3-2, Nov. 1 in Madison, Wis. Freshman defender TessaBonhomme earned WCHA Rookie of the Week honors for guiding thedefense with two assists and holding their opponents to just threegoals in three games. Bonhomme also played a key role in theBuckeyes’ penalty-killing unit which allowed just one goal on 14chances. The No. 11 men’s hockey team swept Lake Superior State by5-0 and 4-1 scores over the weekend, moving the team into a tie forsecond place in the league. The team plays host to Michigan Statefor two games this weekend, as the Buckeyes and Spartans will faceof at 8:05 p.m. Friday and at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Value CityArena. Ohio State enters the game on a six-game (4-0-2) unbeatenstreak vs. Michigan State, including a two-game road sweep earlierthis season. Men’s volleyball (3-0 overall) defeated Juniata (3-2)and Rutgers-Newark (3-0) last weekend at home. Andy Cole scored 22points and had a team-high 19 kills in the win over Juniata. He hit.581. Against Rutgers-Newark, Ricardo Garcia scored 15.5 pointswith 15 kills to lead the Buckeyes. OSU, ranked 12th nationally,will face No. 8 Brigham Young (1-3) in 7 p.m. matches this Fridayand Saturday. Rifle lost to West Virginia, 6,050-5,938 at home lastweekend. Linnea Nygren was the top shooter for the Buckeyes with afifth place finish (374) in air rifle, a second place finish(1,129) in smallbore rifle and fourth in aggregate (1,503).Freshman women’s basketball player Jessica Davenport (Columbus,Ohio/Columbus Independence) tallied her second double-double of theseason with a 16-point (7-of-13) and 15-rebound effort in 40minutes vs. No. 23/25 Michigan State (12-3, 2-2 Big Ten). TheBuckeyes (10-5, 2-2 Big Ten) dropped the first home game of theseason with a 55-47 loss to the Spartans Thursday night in ValueCity Arena. Davenport also blocked a career-high five shots. Themen’s swimming and diving team won 12 of 13 events to defeat theMiami RedHawks 151-86 Saturday at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center.The Buckeyes set two lifetime-best times and Tommy Seay (Jr.,Buffalo, N.Y./McKinley) swam an NCAA B qualifying time in the100-yard freestyle, bringing Ohio State’s record to 6-1 on theyear. Narrowly missing the school record with a lifetime-best timeand an NCAA B qualifying mark, Seay placed first in the 100-yardfreestyle, led-off in the 200-yard freestyle relay with alifetime-best time and joined the 200-yard medley relay team in afirst-place finish. The Buckeyes return to action as they play hostto Penn State Feb. 6 at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center. The women’sswimming and diving team defeated Akron 187-113 Friday, winning 13of 16 events and taking both first and second place in five events.The diving squad also continued its undefeated streak in the3-meter dive. Five Buckeyes were double-event winners, includingNicole Maglich (So., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota), Kylie Lancken (Jr.,Pymble, Australia/Ravenswood), Rebekah Rychvalsky (Fr., Sydney,Australia/Castle Hill), Gulsah Gunenc (Fr., Edirne, Turkey/EdirneAnatolian) and Julie Broms (Fr., Springfield, Ill./NorthCentral[Ind.]) in the diving well. The Buckeyes play host to a BigTen double dual-meet with Illinois and Iowa at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.Saturday at the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center. The synchronizedswimming team swept all three routine events and defeated KeukaCollege and Michigan in the OSU Tri-Meet. Ohio State freshmanKatrin Eggenberger (Buchs SG, Switzerland) earned first-placehonors in the solo event (88.333) while teammate Leslie Edgerton(So., Cincinnati, Ohio) took second. In the duet competition,freshmen Kate Hooven (Pleasanton, Calif.) and Becky Kim (WalnutCreek, Calif.) finished first with a mark of 91.334. Jessica Beck(So., Richmond, Va.) and Stephanie Raftery (So., Cincinnati, Ohio)placed second. Hooven, Kim and junior Lindsay Newbill (LaguanaHills, Calif.) earned first in the trio event with a score of91.667. Lauren Byrom (So., Westville, Ohio), Edgerton and KatieMeyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) finished second. In addition, Kimtook home first-place honors in technical elements, notching ascore of 83.091. Eggenberger placed second and Edgerton finishedthird. The fencing squad will see action this weekend as Ohio Statetravels to the New York University Duals Sunday, Jan. 25 in NewYork, N.Y. Both the men’s and women’s teams are undefeated on theseason with 21 victories combined. The men’s tennis team, rankedNo. 17 in the preseason polls, play host to Xavier and ClevelandState in its season opener at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23 atJesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus, Ohio. The No. 21ranked women’s gymnastics team (4-1, 0-0) defeated the N.C.StateWolfpack but fell to the West Virginia Mountaineers, Sunday, inMorgantown, W. Va. The Buckeyes tallied a season-high 195.600points edging N.C. State, who scored 193.275 points. West Virginiatallied 196.250 points to claim the meet. The Buckeyes were led byTiffanie Janke (Sr., Schaumberg Ill.), who placed first in both thefloor exercise competition with a score of 9.875, and the vaultcompetition, scoring a 9.850. Sophomore Jill Weber (Bel Air, Md.)also contributed by tying with Janke on the vault with a score of9.850. Weber also placed second in the all-around competition witha score of 39.275. The No. 1 men’s gymnastics team defeated theNo.8 Minnesota Golden Gophers, 217.100 – 210.250, Jan. 17 at St.John Arena. OSU outscored Minnesota in four of six events- pommelhorse (37.150-35.900), rings (36.450-35.050), parallel bars(36.700-33.700) and high bar (36.150-34.200). Six Buckeyes postedcareer highs. Randy Monahan (Jr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) finished themeet as the top all-around competitor, compiling a career high56.500. Monahan posted career highs in four events – pommel horse(9.550), rings (9.600), parallel bars (9.150) and high bar (9.850).Capturing first place on rings, vault and high bar, Monahanfinished in the Top 3 in all events.
Ohio State returns to action Jan. 24, as it will face Illinois-Chicago at 8 p.m. EST at the UIC Physical Education Building in Chicago.
The men’s and women’s track teams competed this past weekend atthe 2004 Kentucky Invitational. The Buckeyes received strongperformances from throwers Dan Taylor (Sr./ Middlefield, Ohio) andAmarachi Ukabam (So./Creve Couer, Mo.) both of whom postedfirst-place marks in the weight throw Friday and completed thesweep of the throw events as each topped the field in the shot putSaturday. Taylor’s throw of 66-5.25 in the shot put set a newNutter Field House all-time shot put mark. The Buckeyes were led byJenna Harris (Somerset, N.J.) in the sprints events as the freshmanclocked a time 7.52 seconds in the women’s 60-meter dash to claimthird place. Ohio State’s success in the field events also extendedinto the triple jump, where senior Nosa Ehimwenman capturedfirst-place on Friday with a leap of 50-3.50. Both teams return toaction Saturday, Jan 24. in Columbus, Ohio as they play host toIndiana and Purdue in a tri-meet in French Field House. Thewrestling team (5-5, 0-0) dropped a pair of matches at the 2004NWCA Cliff Keen National Duals in Cleveland, Ohio Saturday. TheBuckeyes faced No. 12-ranked Oklahoma in round one and dropped a30-12 decision before bowing out of the 16-team double-eliminationtournament with a tight 21-20 loss to No. 15 Cornell in theconsolation end of the bracket. Seniors John Clark (165) and TommyRowlands (HWT) and freshman J.D. Bergman (197) completed the daywith wins in each of their matches as Clark and Bergman went 2-0,while Rowlands notched his 27th win of the season against OU.
The Buckeyes next take to the mat Sunday as they open the Big Ten slate against Penn State at 2 p.m. in St. John Arena.
The women’s tennis team opens the spring season Sunday byplaying host to two matches at Jesse Owens West Recreation Centerin Columbus. The Buckeyes face the No. 10 Tennessee Volunteers at11 a.m. and the Xavier Musketeers at 6 p.m. Two Buckeyes, seniorsErica Fisk (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) and Jackie Leskovar(Cambridge, Ontario/N.C. State) enter the 2004 season withrankings. In the Midwest regional rankings released Dec. 4,Leskovar is No. 28 while Fisk holds down the No. 30 spot.
