Ohio State Rallies for 6-1 Victory Over Quinnipiac in Non-Conference Action – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After being down 1-0 going into the second period, the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (10-6-1, 6-6-0 WCHA) rallied for a 6-1 victory over Quinnipiac (6-12-2 Independent) Tuesday night at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. Senior Heather Farrell led the Buckeyes with two goals.
Ohio State returns to conference action this weekend as it faces No. 8/9 Minnesota State at 7:05 p.m. Friday and 4:05 p.m. in the OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes and Mavericks (12-4-2, 5-3-2 WCHA) both are tied for third place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
Quinnipiac came out strong scoring 39 seconds into the first period, as Caitlin Peters scored a top-shelf goal for the Bobcats to take the lead. Ohio State’s defense quickly stepped up the pace only allowing six shots the rest of the period. At the end of the stanza, the Bobcats led 7-6 in shots and 1-0 on the scoreboard.
The Buckeyes stepped up their play in the second period, scoring two goals within 20 seconds of each other to take a 2-1 advantage. Freshman Lacey Schultz (Fr., Kelvington, Saskatchewan) obtained the puck off a faceoff at center ice for a pass to Emma Laaksonen (Sr., Espoo, Finland) who turned the puck over to senior Heather Farrell (Sr., Perth, Ontario) for the Buckeyes’ first goal at 13:58. Laaksonen soon followed with a goal shot from the blue line at 14:18. OSU outshot QU 11-7 in the second stanza.
In the third period, Ohio State shot 45 percent – scoring four goals on nine shots. Freshman Krysta Skarda (Fr., Lake Elmo, Minn.) started the period off with her fourth goal on the season at 3:13. Jeni Creary (Jr., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan) and Tessa Bonhomme (Fr., Sudbury, Ontario) assisted on the goal. Junior captain Meaghan Mulvaney (Jr., Sylvania, Ohio), assisted by Creary at 4:08, scored the second goal of the period. Senior captain Erin O’Grady (Sr., London, Ontario) soon followed a 4-on-4 goal at 4:48. Farrell secured the win as she scored OSU’s sixth goal and her second of the game with one minute remaining.
OSU goaltender Erika Vanderveer (Fr., Bradford, Ontario) earned her fourth consecutive victory as a Buckeye. Vanderveer ended the game with 18 saves on 19 Quinnipiac shots. Wolitski and Lapare split time in the goal for the Bobcats. Wolitski stopped 16-of-21 Buckeye chances, while Lapare stopped 4-of-5 in the last 15:12 of the game.
Ohio State’s nationally fourth-ranked penalty-killing unit held the Bobcats scoreless on all three power-play chances. OSU was 0-for-1 on the power play in the game.
