Junior women’s soccer forward Lisa Grubb was named Big TenOffensive Player of the Week Monday as she recorded two goals andone assist in Ohio State’s 4-1 season opening win over IndianaState Friday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Footballdefensive end Simon Fraser, a junior from nearby Upper Arlington,led the Ohio State defense in holding Washington to nine points and7 yards rushing Saturday to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 start indefense of the 2002 National Championship. Fraser was recognizedfor his efforts by being named the Big Ten’s Co-Defensive Player ofthe Week.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams will open the 2003season Friday at the Ohio State University Golf Course when theyplay host to the Ohio State Invitational. The women’s race is setto begin at 4 p.m., with the men’s race beginning at 4:45 p.m. Thewomen’s volleyball squad opens the 2003 season with four homematches in a seven-day period starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday againstBall State. OSU then hosts the Buckeye Classic starting Friday at 5p.m. with Georgia Tech playing Temple and OSU hosting WesternMichigan at 7 p.m. The Classic continues Sunday with a match atnoon and Ohio State playing at 2 p.m. The Buckeyes finish thehomestand at 7 p.m., next Tuesday by hosting Cleveland State.Women’s soccer looks to start its season at 3-0 for the fourth timein program history as they play host to 11th-ranked Virginia at 1p.m. Friday. The Buckeyes scored four goals in each of its openingweekend wins, as OSU downed Indiana State Friday 4-1 behind atwo-goal and one-assist effort from junior Lisa Grubb, beforeclaiming a 4-0 shutout victory at Wright State Sunday. Junior LizMumley tallied two goals and fellow junior Emily Gilbert recordedthree assists in the win over the Raiders. The football team’s 28-9victory over the Washington Huskies sets the stage for the secondof five-consecutive home games this week against San Diego State.Kickoff is set for 12:10 p.m. Saturday in Ohio Stadium. The gamewill be televised regionally by ESPN Plus and locally by WBNS10-TV. The field hockey team finished its first weekend out 1-1.The Buckeyes lost to California, 6-1, Saturday in Berkley, Calif.Junior Lucy Clayton scored the lone goal on an assist from JeneeDoto and Florencia Stier. The squad came back for a victory Sunday,defeating Pacific, 3-1 in Stanford, Calif. Freshmen forward CurlyneWynn and goalkeeper Tory Krauss led the Buckeyes to victory. Wynntallied two goals, her first Ohio State career points, and Kraussrecorded five saves in her first collegiate appearance. TheBuckeyes complete their road trip Tuesday when they take onStanford at 3 p.m. EST in Stanford, Calif. The team returns to hostits home opener vs. Kent State at 10 or 11 a.m. Saturday at NorthTurf Field. The men’s soccer team opened the 2003 season lastweekend at the Cal State-Fullerton Soccer Town Classic. The Buckeyedefense turned in two good performances against top teams CalState-Fullerton and defending national champion UCLA, allowing justone goal to each opponent, but Ohio State dropped both matches by1-0 final scores. The Buckeyes will host the Ohio State Classicthis weekend in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Ohio State will hostTulsa Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Bradley Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
