COLUMBUS, Ohio – Allan Johnson, the Director of Football Strength and Conditioning for The Ohio State University football team was inducted into the USA Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame in a ceremony June 1 at the York Barbell Museum in York, Pa.
Johnson was one of 37 persons selected to the Hall by the board of directors of the USA Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame.
Johnson is one of the most respected and well-known names in this important athletic profession, having spent four years as a strength coach for the Baltimore Orioles and 13 years with West Virginia University. He has had several articles published in various fitness magazines, including The American Fitness Quarterly and The National Strength and Conditioning Association Journal. Johnson was one of 10 strength and conditioning coaches nationwide to receive the title of Master Strength & Conditioning Coach in 2001, the same year he joined the OSU staff.
This is the first year of national recognition for the field of strength and conditioning; however, athletics coaches have long understood the importance of strength and conditioning coaches. Strength and conditioning programs have helped improve power, speed, body control, and endurance for many competitive athletes. Strength and conditioning is also effective in reducing the rate of athletic injuries.
Earlier this year, Johnson was named the 2002 National Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year, an award presented annually by the Professional Football Strength and Conditioning Coaches Society and voted on by the NFL’s strength and conditioning coaches. In addition to these honor, Johnson has served on the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Special Olympics Advisory Board and was selected as the Big East Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year in 1997, ’98 and 2000 when he was at West Virginia.
