Junior golfer Allison Hanna earned her first career medalist honors Sunday at the 2003 Big Ten Championships, shooting a round of 73 in the final round to finish with a mark of 294. She was also named First Team All-Big Ten along with teammates Lindsay Knowlton and Kristen White at the conclusion of the event. Hanna has posted eight Top 10 finishes in 11 tournaments for the Buckeyes this season.
Junior thrower Dan Taylor (Middlefield, Ohio/Berkshire) was named as the Most Outstanding Male Athlete at the 2003 Penn Relays held April 24 -26 at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field after scoring first place in both the Men’s Collegiate Shot Put and Hammer Throw Championships of America. Taylor, who eclipsed his own Ohio State record in the hammer by two inches with a 209-8, has placed first in nine of his last 10 throw competitions. Taylor’s first title came Friday as he posted a 65-0.50 to top the field in the Men’s Collegiate Shot Put Championship of America. In his second event Friday, Taylor claimed a fourth place finish in the Men’s Collegiate Championship of America in the discus as he marked a 177-6. For his efforts Taylor was recognized Tuesday as Big Ten Athlete of the Week for the sixth time this season and third this month.
Senior Curtis Smith had seven points, on three goals (including the fourth-quarter gamewinner) and four assists, to lead the men’s lacrosse team to a 14-10 victory over Butler Saturday. The win clinched a share of the GWLL title and the team’s first-ever berth in the NCAA tournament for the Buckeyes. Smith’s seven points moved him into a tie for fifth place in OSU history for career points with 148.
Women’s lacrosse senior Shannon Wilson scored three goals in OSU’s 10-5 win at Duquesne and added two ground balls and four caused turnovers in the game. Her three goals come on four shots including a free position score. She also scored four goals in OSU’s 10-9 upset of No. 9 Penn State on the road and added two ground balls. Wilson scored three consecutive goals in the second half to take OSU from trailing 6-4 to a 7-6 lead. The three goals came in 4:48. Her fourth goal broke an 8-all tie at 52:04.
