Athletes of the Week – Ohio State Buckeyes
4/28/2003 12:00:00 AM | General
Congratulations to Ohio State senior guard Brent Darby. Darby broke the 30-point barrier for the second time in his last three games to re-capture the Big Ten scoring lead and earn Big Ten Conference Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career. He poured in 30 points on 69 percent (11-16) shooting, including hitting 5 of 7 3-point attempts, to lead the Buckeyes past Morehead State (74-60). Darby tied the Ohio State Value City Arena scoring record with his 30-point outburst and set three career-bests with 11 field goals, five 3-pointers and four steals. He also is ranked either first or second in the league in assists (T2nd, 5.00), steals (2nd, 2.20) and 3-point field goal percentage (T1st, .600). The Detroit-native has also been an iron man on the court, playing all 40 minutes in each of the first four games of the season before posting “only” 36 minutes in the victory vs. Morehead State.
Women’s ice hockey junior defenseman Emma Laaksonen was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) defensive player of the week for the week ending Dec. 15. Laasksonen scored two goals in the 4-0 shutout Saturday. Laaksonen aided the Buckeye penalty-killing unit, which held Princeton scoreless on all seven power plays last weekend. She is averaging 1.00 points per game, seventh in the nation among defensemen. She ranks second in points on the Buckeye squad with 16 overall.
