Opening comments:
“You could not have had a better day for a spring football game. The sun was shining and there were a lot of people here (57,200). Our guys enjoy when there are a lot of folks around. There were a lot of good experiences for the young guys who are fighting for a little bit more playing time. I though it was a heck of a battle. The best thing was that there were no serious injuries. When all that occurs, you know we’ve had a successful spring game.”
On the difference from last year:
“A year ago we had a lot of key offensive guys out. Today our defense had about six guys missing. Plus we only gave them two different defenses to run on each down, so our guys had a pretty good idea about what was coming at them. Every spring game is different and every season is different.”
On the positives and negatives:
“I think you look at the pluses and minuses you apply the same formula, ‘you better not turn the ball over and you better do well on special teams.’ If you really dissect the game, the turnovers and the big plays on special teams were huge. That formula will never change. The second best thing that happened was that some guys who had not been in pressure situations in Ohio Stadium got to be in some pressure situations. I can’t think of any downsides because there were a lot of good opportunities today.”
On Justin Zwick and Troy Smith:
“I think they did well. A little bit like the entire spring has gone, they both showed that could make some plays, but the also showed that they can make mistakes. But that is what you have to do. You’re never going to walk into a situation without making mistakes and learning from them. They both demonstrated the ability to make plays and compete. That was one of the big things we wanted to do was put the young quarterbacks under pressure. That is why we blitzed so much. They are both pretty poised and confident guys and both will learn a lot from today.”
