The battle lines have been drawn for Saturday’s Scarlet and Gray football game in Ohio Stadium. With head coach Jim Tressel serving as commissioner, the senior class of 2003 chose up sides early Tuesday afternoon at a special team draft held at the Woody Hayes Athletics Center.
The Gray squad, coached by Luke Fickell, won the toss and opened the position of cornerback, taking last year’s co-MVP Chris Gamble with the first pick. The Scarlet Squad, under the direction of head coach Tim Spencer, then chose veteran defensive back Dustin Fox.
Next, the Scarlet seniors, which include returning starters Craig Krenzel, Michael Jenkins, Alex Stepanovich, Ivan Douglas and Tim Anderson, opened the position of offensive tackle and selected Rob Sims with their first true pick.
The Gray seniors, comprised of Will Smith, Bryce Bishop, Ben Hartsock, Scott McMullen and Will Allen, responded by nabbing center Nick Mangold.
With the fourth overall position pick, the Scarlet team then selected All-America place-kicker Mike Nugent.
After the Gray team opened the offensive guard slot and chose John Conroy, the Scarlet team chose linebacker A.J. Hawk with the sixth overall pick.
The Gray quickly chose redshirt freshman flanker Santonio Holmes with the next pick.
Staying on the defensive side of the ball, the Scarlet team selected sam linebacker Mike D’Andrea with the eighth position pick.
Linebacker Anthony Schlegel, a transfer from the Air Force Academy, then went to the Gray team with fullback Brandon Schnittker going to the Scarlet with the 10th position pick.
Tailback Maurice Hall was the 11th overall choice, going to the Gray squad, which also took Maurice Clarett after the Scarlet team chose Lydell Ross.
Redshirt freshman Jay Richardson was taken by the Scarlet with the 12th position pick.
The Gray squad then selected quarterback Troy Smith with the next pick, while the Scarlet team went for tight end Ryan Hamby.
Long snapper Kyle Andrews (Gray), split end Roy Hall (Scarlet), defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock (Gray), safety Nate Salley (Scarlet), defensive end Redgie Arden (Gray) and punter Buck Weaver (Scarlet) rounded out the position picks.
Both teams considered trades, but the Gray squad was not willing to part with Santonio Holmes and the Scarlet team would not deal Mike D’Andrea, so negotiations fell through.
Saturday’s game kicks off at 1:37 p.m. in Ohio Stadium. Tickets ($5.00 each) currently are on sale at the Athletics Ticket Office or on line at www.hangonsloopy.com.
Approximately 85,000 tickets have been printed for the game and 50,000 of those have been sold thus far.
