Women’s basketball player Jessica Davenport was named the BigTen Player of the Week, the Big Ten Conference announced Monday. Itis Davenport’s third honor of the season and her third overall.Davenport is the first Ohio State player to earn three player ofthe week honors in the same year since two-time All-American KatieSmith tallied three conference player of the week awards during the1992-93 season.
The sophomore center averaged 34.0 points, 11.5 rebounds and shot 73.2 percent (30-of-41) from the field in wins at Wisconsin and at Illinois last week. Davenport also tallied four blocked shots, one steal and three assists in the two contests.
At Wisconsin, Davenport scored a career-best and Kohl Center record 36 points off a 15-of-21 night from the field. Her point total is tied for fourth on the Ohio State all-time single-game scoring list. Davenport’s 36 points vs. the Badgers marked the most points scored by a Big Ten student-athlete since Michigan’s Jennifer Smith had 37 vs. Charlotte Dec. 3, 2003.
Against Illinois, Davenport tallied her sixth-season and 10th-career double-double at Illinois with 32 points and 14 rebounds. Davenport was 15-of-20 from the field and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. The win at Illinois was the first for a Buckeye squad in Champaign since an 88-72 Ohio State victory Jan. 28, 1995.
Davenport’s back-to-back 30-point games marked the third such performance for any Buckeye player. The last person to tally consecutive 30-point games was Lisa Cline, who scored 35 and 32 points in victories vs. Marshall and at Colorado in December of 1988.
Men’s hockey sophomore forward Matt Beaudoin was named the CCHAOffensive Player of the Week after posting a team-best six pointsin the Buckeyes’ series sweep of Western Michigan. He had two goalsand an assist in each game vs. the Broncos. He had three power-playgoals and a shorthanded goal, helping the Buckeye special teamsconvert 6-of-11 power-play chances and stop all 10 WMU power plays.In OSU’s 4-3 win Friday, Beaudoin earned first star of the gamehonors, as he set up Andrew Schembri’s power-play goal in the firstperiod and then scored two clutch power-play goals. Beaudoin gaveOSU a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal with just 45 seconds left inthe first period. In the third, he scored the gamewinner – histeam-best third of the season – just 1:52 after WMU had tied thegame. Saturday, Beaudoin was the second star of the game, postingan assist in the first period and scoring shorthanded and on thepower play in the second, as OSU won, 7-0.
Tuesday, Beaudoin was named the RBC Financial Group CCHA Player of the Month after posting a team-best 14 points in eight games in January. He is on a four-game goal-scoring streak, with six goals in the stretch (including five power-play scores, a shorthanded goal and two gamewinners).

The women’s tennis team will host “Serve Up Some Hope” Saturdaynight, a fundraiser for the Ohio State women’s tennis team and theStefanie Spielman Breast Cancer Research Fund. The event will beheld from 6-10 p.m. at Jesse Owens West (OSU Indoor TennisFacility), located at the corner of Kenny Road and Carmack. Ticketprices are $50 a person ages 10 and up, $30 per child (under 10years) and $15 for Ohio State students. Events include a silentauction, a pro tennis exhibition, a chance to ht with pros and horsd’oeuvres and drinks all night. Therese Hession, head coach of the women’s golfteam, was inducted into the National Golf Coaches Association(NGCA) Hall of Fame at the annual conference in New Orleans, La.Hession, who was nominated by fellow coach Jill Briles-Hinton ofFlorida, was among four honorees. Hession is in her 14th year atthe helm of the Buckeye women’s golf program. She has led theBuckeyes to six Big Ten championships and nine appearances in thenational championships, including the last eight consecutive years.Hession, a five-time Big Ten coach of the year honoree, was the1997 National Coach of the Year. In 2003, she led the Buckeyes to afourth-place finish at the NCAA championships. Hession and theBuckeyes will play host to the 10th annual Northrop GrummanRegional Challenge Feb. 7-9 in Palos Verdes, Calif. Thesynchronized swimming Buckeyes captured first-place honors Jan. 29at the Walsh Tri-Meet in Canton, Ohio. The Buckeyes finished with92 points, ahead of second-place Canisius (72) and third-placeWalsh (43). Ohio State junior Leslie Edgerton won the solo eventwith a mark of 86.666. Two Buckeye freshmen duet groups, MichelleBenzie and Julia Broadfoot and twin sisters Leah Pinette and AynePinette, tied for first place with scores of 87.666. The team ofErin Schmidt, Stacey Coffman and Benzie placed first in trio with amark of 86.666. The Buckeyes also took home first place in the teamevent with a score of 88.84. Swimming for Ohio State was JessicaBeck, Benzie, Coffman, Edgerton, Megan Mikulecky, Ayne Pinette,Stephanie Raftery and Schmidt.
The Buckeyes will play host to the OSU College Association Meet at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Varsity Pool at Larkins Hall. The Buckeyes welcome six teams: Illinois, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Ohio University, Walsh and William & Mary, in addition to Ohio State. The meet will feature all four routine events: solo, duet, trio and team.
The No. 2/3 women’s basketball team (21-2; 8-1 Big Ten) notchedwins at Wisconsin and Illinois last week and return home to playhost to Indiana (8-11; 1-8 Big Ten) at 2 p.m. Sunday in Value CityArena. The Buckeyes’ No. 2 ranking is the highest in programhistory and the squad is on a 10-game win streak. It has been twodecades since Ohio State was 21-2. The 1984-85 Buckeyes were 21-2in the first 22 games and won the next seven consecutive outingsbefore ending the season with a 72-68 loss vs. Old Dominion March23, 1985 in the NCAA east regional final game. Sophomores Sonia Ruzimovsky (Brooklyn,N.Y./Brooklyn Tech) and Kristin Messmer (So., Lutherville,Md./McDonogh) both posted 2-0 singles records over the weekend asthe women’s tennis team split a pair of matches over the weekend.In the Buckeyes’ loss to Western Michigan Saturday, Messmer sweptRheedhina Parekh, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 4 position while Ruzimovskybeat Saruta, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 6. Later in the day, Messmer shut outGina Peretti, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4, and Ruzimovsky improved to 3-0 onthe spring season with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Nicole Muzechuk atthe No. 5 position as Ohio State shut out Youngstown State, 7-0.
The Buckeyes return to action Feb. 12 when they play host to William and Mary at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center.
The No. 8/9 men’s hockey team swept a two-game series againstWestern Michigan last weekend, posting 4-3 and 7-0 wins. SophomoreMatt Beaudoin had six points in the series to earn CCHA OffensivePlayer of the Week honors, while goalie Dave Caruso stopped57-of-60 shots, including 28 Saturday for his sixth career shutout,and added two assists to earn league goaltender of the weekaccolades. Freshman Tom Fritsche had five points in the series,including his first career hat trick Saturday, to earn INCHNational Player of the Week accolades. Beaudoin had a team-best 14points in the eight games in January to earn RBC Financial GroupCCHA Player of the Month honors.
The Buckeyes (18-7-3, 15-4-1/2nd CCHA) travel to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to take on Lake Superior State (7-13-6, 6-7-5/t-6th CCHA) in a two-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association series this weekend. The teams will meet at 7:35 p.m. Friday and at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Both games will be broadcast by WOSU Radio (820 AM/wosu.org).
The pistol team took first place in team competition with a1,638 score at the Mid-West Air Sectionals held Jan. 29 at NorthOlmsted, Ohio. The team consisted of shooters Jennifer Trickett,Anthony Douglass and Teresa Meyer. Trickett’s 554 score was goodfor second place in the competition while Douglass finished thirdat 553. In the women’s air competition, Trickett took first placewith a 361 score with Meyer finishing second at 354. Ohio State’snext event will be the Collegiate Sectionals, Friday-Saturday, Feb.18-19 at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range in Converse Hall. The rifleteam’s Ryan Kohatsu took top honors at the 2005 Roger WithrowInvitational last weekend (Jan. 28-30) shooting an 1,173 aggregatescore as Ohio State finished ninth in the competition of 11 teams.Kohatus took top honors in smallbore with a score of 591 andfinished 10th in air rifle with 582. Beth Tidmore of Memphis wonthe air rifle competition with a 593. Ohio State posted a 2,219 insmallbore for ninth place and a 2,225 in air rifle for 10th.Kentucky-Blue won the invitational with a 4,618 aggregate score.They took first in smallbore with a 2,309 and was fourth in airrifle with a 2,309. Memphis won in air rifle with a 2,333. OhioState will next compete at Xavier, Friday, Feb. 5. The 12th-rankedmen’s volleyball team split a pair of road match last week,defeated St. Francis 3-0 (30-23, 30-24, 30-27) and falling 3-1(30-20, 22-30, 30-21, 31-29) at sixth-ranked Penn State. At St.Francis, Mark Greaves had a match-high 14 kills (.214) for OSU withLayne Dreven adding a career-high 11 kills (529). Greaves had ateam-high 18 kills (.216) against Penn State with Mike Wauligmanand Suart Katz adding 11 kills each. OSU’s Scott Spurlockcontributed a match-high nine blocks with a solo and eight assistsagainst the Nittany Lions. Ohio State continues on the road thisweekend facing Juniata Friday and opening the defense of their 2004Midwestern intercollegiate Volleyball Association crown atMercyhurst Saturday. The No. 23 swimming and diving team saidgoodbye to an era last Saturday when the men’s team competedagainst Michigan in the last collegiate swim meet in the Mike PeppeAquatic Center. Many gathered to cheer on the Buckeyes and saygoodbye to a pool that has been a part of the swimming and divingprogram since 1977. Although the Buckeyes lost to Michigan,125-118, the team set eight season-best times during the meet. RobKauscher and Matt Voelker claimed wins and season-best times in the200-yard breaststroke and the 50-yard freestyle, respectively. TheOhio State 400-yard freestyle relay team went 1-2-3, with all threeteams touching the wall three seconds before the Michigan team. Forthe divers, Mitch Richeson claimed both springboard events for theBuckeyes. The Buckeyes also competed Friday, Jan. 28 and defeatedMichigan State 127-102. Ohio State had seven individual event winsalong with two diving wins. Tommy Seay was the only double-eventwinner of the night, claiming the 200-yard individual medley andwinning the 100-yard freestyle for the ninth consecutive time. RyanSciortino also was an event winner for the Buckeyes, reaching thewall in a season-best time of 9:34.92 in the 1,000-yard freestyle.Nate King clocked a season-best time also in the 500-yardfreestyle, touching the wall in 4:36.88. The Buckeye divers went1-2-3-4 on both the 1-meter and the 3-meter boards with MitchRicheson placing first on the 1-meter and Marc Dreyer claiming the3-meter. For his efforts in both meets, Mitch Richeson was namedBig Ten Diver of the Week. The Buckeyes will return to the pool forthe 2005 Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. Women’sswimming and diving wrapped up its regular season schedule fallingto both Iowa, 161.5-137.5, and Northwestern, 168-131, in Iowa City,Iowa Saturday. Despite the losses, the Buckeyes had six overallwinners in the double-dual meet. Nicole Maglich won two events forthe Buckeyes in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events. GulsahGunenc also was a double-event winner for the Buckeyes, taking the100- and 200-yard butterfly. Griet Buelens out-raced the othercompetitors in the 1,000-yard freestyle. In the diving well, JulieBroms claimed both springboard events for the Buckeyes. TheBuckeyes with return to the pool for the 2005 Big Ten Championshipsin Bloomington, Ind. The women’s ice hockey team earned oneconference point as the Buckeyes lost and tied St. Cloud State inSt. Cloud, Minn. OSU fell 4-2 Jan. 28 and tied SCSU 2-2 in overtimeJan. 29. The Buckeye penalty-kill held St. Cloud State scoreless on5-of-6 power plays on the weekend. Sophomore defenseman TessaBonhomme led the Buckeye squad with two goals vs. SCSU. Senior JeniCreary recorded the game-tying goal and had an assist Jan. 29.Seven Buckeyes posted points on the SCSU weekend, including threeplayers which recorded two points each – Bonhomme (2-0-2), Creary(1-1-2) and Jana Harrigan (0-2-2). The women’s ice hockey team setto face off against Bemidji State at 3:05 p.m. EST Friday andSaturday at John S. Glas Fieldhouse in Bemidji, Minn. This weekendmarks the second series between the teams this season. Earlier thisyear, the Buckeyes swept BSU in Columbus. Ohio State leads theall-time series 14-7-3 vs. Bemidji State. The No. 19 women’sgymnastics team posted their best performance of the season, with aseason-high score of 194.775, to place second in a tri-meet againstNo. 11 Oklahoma and Illinois State Jan. 29, in St. John Arena.Illinois State finished the evening with a score of 188.625 tofinish third, while Oklahoma claimed the event with a score of195.900. Overall, the Buckeyes finished first on beam with a scoreof 49.125 and placed second on vault (48.800), bars (48.550) andfloor (48.300).
Senior Liz Meaney (Ashtabula, Ohio) and junior Kaylin Schelcht (Marion, Ohio) provided the scoring spark for the Buckeye rotation. Schlecht placed first on bars with a career-high score of 9.900 and finished fourth on beam with a mark of 9.825. Meaney finished first on beam for the third consecutive meet, tying a career-high with a 9.950. Meaney also finished fourth-place on floor with a tally of 9.825.
The No. 1 men’s gymnastics team completed its meet vs. No. 2Illinois with a 223.4 tie. The Buckeyes’ 223.4 mark is the highestNCAA away team score since 2000.
In the competition, freshman DJ Bucher (Mason, Ohio/Queen City Gymnastics) tallied the highest score of the meet on rings with a 9.850. Bucher was the only gymnast to score above a 9.7 on two events (Parallel bars – 9.725). With Cody Trobaugh (Sr., Dallas, Texas/Houston Gym. Academy) and Randy Monahan (Sr., Elizabethtown, Pa./Central Pa. Academy of Gym.) notching the Top 3 spots in the event, Ohio State became the No. 1 team in the nation on rings.
The men’s golf team opens the 2005 portion of its season at 8a.m. on Saturday as they compete in the 54-hole Gator Invitationalin Gainesville, Fla. The event will played at Par 70, 6,701-yardUniversity Golf Course. The Buckeyes enter the tournament with anaverage of 293.5 strokes per round. The men’s and women’s track andfield teams will compete in the 2005 Armory Collegiate InvitationalFeb. 4-5, in New York, N.Y. This past weekend Buckeyes competed atthe Ohio State Invitational this past weekend at French Field Housein a non-team scoring event.
Highlighting the day for the Buckeyes was senior Rosalind Goodwin as she provisionally qualified for the NCAA indoor championships in both the long and triple jumps. She took first place in both events, reaching 42-2.75 in the triple and 20-3 in the long jump. Shayla Moore also provisionally qualified for the NCAA’s in the triple jump at 42-1.25/ 12.83m. Jenna Harris swept the sprint events, winning the 60m in a season-best 7.47 and claiming the top spot in the 200m at 24.71. Shelaine Larson improved her provisional mark in the weight with a winning throw of 64-8.50/19.72m.
For the men Marios Iacouvo became the first high jumper to clear the 7-foot mark for Ohio State since 1995. Iacouvo won the event with a height of 7-0.25. Todd Dutch bested the field in the 200m at 21.99 and took second in the 60m in a season-best 6.83. Bryan Duby placed in the Top 5 of a stacked weight throw event with a heave of 66-3.
The No. 11 men’s tennis team shut out Butler and Xavier, 7-0,in its 2005 home opener Friday at Jesse Owens West Tennis Center.With the two wins, the Buckeyes opened the season with a 2-0 markand remained undefeated in home openers under sixth-year head coachTy Tucker. Ohio State extended its home win streak to 19 matchesafter the two wins over Butler and Xavier. The streak dates back tothe 2003 season starting with a 5-2 win over Purdue April 6.
Up next, the Buckeyes return to tournament action as they travel Thursday through Sunday to the Washington Invitational in Seattle. Ohio State will be back in Columbus as the squad hosts Arkansas at 4 p.m. Feb. 11 at Jesse Owens West Tennis Center.
The Buckeyes (7-7, 0-3 Big Ten) wrestled in three dual matcheslast weekend at St. John Arena. Ohio State dropped a 21-12 decisionto Big Ten rival Purdue Friday before splitting a pair of meets vs.Virginia and Indiana Sunday. Ohio State dominated the Cavaliers,emerging with a 36-6 win, but fell to 0-3 in league action with a24-9 loss to No. 17 Indiana.
Ohio State’s freshmen made an impact both days as 133 T.J. Enright, 141 Jason Johnstone, 157 Keegan Mueller and HWT Kirk Nail all won matches against the Boilermakers. Enright completed his weekend with a perfect 3-0 mark, while Johnstone’s win came against a nationally-ranked opponent in Purdue’s Rene Hernandez Friday.
A nationally-ranked wrestler handed Nail his only loss of the homestand, but it took Indiana senior Pat DeGain, ranked No. 4, four overtimes to defeat the Buckeye HWT in an 8-4 decision.
Junior Steve Wolery and sophomore J.D. Bergman, ranked No. 4 at 197, each finished 2-1 on the weekend with Bergman scoring his team-leading ninth major decision.
The Buckeyes conclude their home schedule with bouts against No. 12 Wisconsin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Worthington-Kilbourne High School and vs. No. 9 Iowa at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in St. John Arena.
The No. 1 fencing squad competed Saturday and Sunday at theNotre Dame Duals at the Joyce Center Fieldhouse in South Bend, Ind.The Buckeyes improved to 28-2 overall with wins over Notre Dame,Penn State, Cleveland State, Northwestern, Detroit, Cal StateFullerton, Michigan, Wayne State, Michigan State, Wisconsin andLawrence. The men’s squad is now 14-1 this season as they sufferedtheir first loss to No. 2 Penn State, 15-12. On the women’s side,the Buckeyes improved to 14-1 overall with a 16-11 loss to No. 2Notre Dame. The Buckeyes are back in action Saturday as they playhost to opponents at the Ohio State Duals. Competition will be heldin French Field House in Columbus, Ohio. Last season at the OhioState Duals, the men dominated all seven teams they faced,including Bowling Green, 25-2, Cleveland State, 26-1, Case WesternReserve, 26-1, Chicago 26-1, Michigan State, 23-4, Northwestern,26-1, and Purdue, 23-4. On the women’s side, Ohio State defeatedBowling Green, 27-0, Cleveland State, 27-0, Case Western Reserve,26-1, Chicago, 27-0, Michigan State, 26-1, Northwestern, 20-7, andPurdue 26-1.
