No. 11 Men’s Hockey Loses to No. 14/15 Cornell in Overtime, 4-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

ESTERO, Fla. – The No. 11 Ohio State men’s hockey team lost in overtime to No. 14/15 Cornell, 4-3, in the championship game of the Everblades College Classic Sunday at TECO Arena. The Buckeyes battled back to tie the game in the third, but Cornell’s Greg Hornby scored with 2:30 left in the extra stanza to give the Big Red the win and the tournament title.
The Buckeyes fall to 12-8-0 on the year (8-5-0 CCHA) after going 1-1-0 in the tournament. The squad beat No. 3 Maine in the opening round, 4-2. Cornell improves to 6-2-5 (4-0-2 ECAC). Ohio State beat the Big Red earlier this season, topping Cornell Nov. 22, 4-3, in Ithaca, N.Y.
The Buckeyes opened the scoring in the game with a power-play tally by Kenny Bernard (Fr., Sarnia, Ontario) at the 7:48 mark. JB Bittner (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) passed the puck to Dan Knapp (So., Rochester, Mich.) behind the net, who moved the puck in front to Bernard for the one-timer. The goal was the first of Bernard’s career. Buckeye senior goalie Mike Betz (Elizabeth, Pa.) stopped all four Cornell shots in the period, including a point-blank save on the stick side with the Big Red on the power play. The Buckeyes put seven shots on net in the period.
The Big Red won the second period, outscoring the Buckeyes, 3-1. Mike Iggulden scored back-to-back goals, at 7:56 and 13:20, to give Cornell its first lead of the game. Paul Caponigri (Sr., Oak Park, Ill.) tied the game at two, assisted by Sean Collins (Fr., Troy, Mich.) with an unassisted goal, picking the puck up from Collins in the Buckeye zone and skating through the neutral zone and the Big Red zone before beating Cornell goalie David McKee with a high shot at 15:10. Matt Moulson regained the lead for the Big Red two minutes later to send the Buckeyes into the lockerroom down by one (3-2). The Buckeyes were outshot in the period, 7-4.
The Buckeyes tied the game at the 10:21 mark of the third period, as three Buckeye freshmen combined for a goal. Matt Waddell (Fr., Armstrong, British Columbia) took a pass from Andrew Schembri (Fr., Mississauga, Ontario) and beat McKee with a wrist shot. Bryce Anderson (Fr., Waterloo, Iowa) also assisted on the goal. The Buckeyes outshot Cornell in the period, 11-4, but CU goalie McKee held strong.
In overtime, Hornby scored at 2:30, assisted by Cam Abbott and Chris Abbott. It was the Big Red’s second shot of the extra stanza; the Buckeyes put one shot on net in overtime.
In the game, the Buckeyes outshot Cornell, 23-17. Betz made 13 saves, while McKee stopped 20 Buckeye shots.
Ohio State was 1-for-6 on the power play and held Cornell scoreless on two chances.
After the game, Caponigri and Buckeye defenseman Nate Guenin (So., Aliquippa, Pa.) were named to the 2003 Everblades College Classic All-Tournament Team. It was the second such honor for Caponigri, who also was honored in 2000.
Ohio State returns to action with three games the week of Jan. 4. The squad will play host to Quinnipiac at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6 in Value City Arena before traveling to Ann Arbor, Mich., for a two-game series. The Buckeyes and Wolverines will face off at 7:35 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 9-10 in Yost Ice Arena.
